"Yes, please!" Joel nodded to the shopkeeper with wide eyes and carefully selected a treat. He licked it experimentally, then devoured it. "Mmm... Really good." His voice came out a little thick with the sticky sweetness of the treat.
He was glad that Josephine got a sample, too, and he smiled at her. When she mentioned her sister he agreed readily, "Sure!", and then felt the slightest twinge of guilt that he hadn't even momentarily considered getting his sister anything. Well, now it was like he had to. "Gee, I guess I should get Callie something, too." He looked around, considering. She seemed to like most candy, so he would make things simple and just share whatever kind he got for himself with her, he supposed.... No, wait. There were some little bar-shaped candies on the counter, each wrapped in waxed paper and made of seeds and honey. That looked like her sort of thing, since she was avian and all...
"I'd like three of those, please. I think my sister will like them." Not enough of them to be too expensive, but enough to be a nice treat... "And..." And he had to make a decision on toffee. The chewy ones were his favorite, but the hard ones were cheaper and lasted longer, which made them almost like having more candy. He could never pass up having more candy! "A quarter-pound of the hard toffee." The whole thing wouldn't make too much of a dent in his wallet if he kept to small amounts... he really hoped his mom wouldn't notice that the change he brought back from shopping was a little less than she expected.
"So, what does you sister like?" He asked, watching the shopkeeper scoop his toffees into a small paper bag.

"All right, I'll get that wrapped up for you young man," the man said in a sing song voice as he scooped out the proper amounts of candy and bagged them neatly for the young cat. He would quietly wait for the girl to finish picking out her candy before asking for payment.
Josephine's tail continued to wag as she waited for Joel to focus on her. When he did she paused for a moment, unsure of what to say. What did Saffron like? She did a bad job of paying attention to the little details. "I'm not sure," she said as she scanned the shelves. Maybe she would like the chewy toffee? And then she could get the rock candy that she originally wanted.
"Oh! How about a lolipop!" She said suddenly as she turned to one of the racks. She pointed to a white one that was stripped blue. "That one matches her colors. Can you get it down for me Joel? And the red one next to it?"

Joel smiled up at the shopkeeper and watched intently as shiny caramel-colored toffees were placed in a small paper bag and weighed. He couldn't help licking his lips as he thought about how good that first sample had tasted, and how delicious the ones in the bag would surely be. Sweet and creamy, with just a hint of salt.... "Mmm..." He muttered softly before turning back toward Jo.
He glanced at the wooden stand that held an assortment of large, colorful lollies. In his opinion, hard candies like that were a mixed bag. They usually looked a bit nicer than they actually tasted, and he was always tempted to crunch into them before long, but he liked how the big ones lasted for hours and had a stick to prevent the fur of his paws from getting gummed up with sugar. These particular ones were the big swirly kind that small children always begged for.
"Okay! I bet she'd like that." The boy was able to reach the pops Josephine indicated relatively easily, and he handed them to her carefully by the sticks. "These are the really pretty ones, so I guess most girls would like them." He smiled amiably and looked back to the lollipop rack.
Quite a few of them seemed to be colored like the coats of various realms-- A pink, yellow and lavender one recalled Yarrows, and one was purple and dark chocolate, an approximation of Torquehelm colors. He giggled, wondering if it was intentional. A heavy paw pointed toward a bright green and deep purplish swirled one. "That one sort of matches me! What flavor do you think it is? Green apple and black raspberry, maybe?"

Josephine scooped them up, her tail wagging the entire time. She gave an emphatic nod to his comment. Then again, she didn't like them because they were pretty, she liked them because she knew that they tasted good. Sugary goodness that would keep her going for hours on end. Mom would probably have a small fit.
She carefully balanced the lollipops in her paws so she could answer Joel. The lollipops did seem to match the different regions, though some of them were so brightly colored and mixed she couldn't place anything. Then again if there was something close to her the owner probably made them based off of the people he had seen. There was totally one that matched his colors to a t.
"Green apple and black raspberry would be a yummy combination... though it could also be lime and raspberry." She shuffled over to give it a sniff. Normally she could smell it well enough through the plastic. "Mmmm. Apple and raspberries. You should get it! We'd have a matching set! What does your sister look like? We could get her one too!"
She carefully scooped up her own prizes and trotted over to the counter, carefully pushing them onto the top.

"Yeah! I like apple more than lime, though." Joel also sniffed at the wrapped treat, although his sense of smell was a little less sensitive than a canine's, and the whole shop was filled with a sweet mingling of chocolate, fruity and caramelized sugar scents that made it hard to distinguish any single flavor.
He nodded when Josephine confirmed the flavors he had guessed, "Yeah, I think I will... She's green like me, and part red like our mom..." A frown briefly obscured his grin. "If I get them for me and Callie I'll have to get them for my brothers, too. I don't know if I have enough money for that." He jingled his coin purse speculatively. Sometimes it was so hard being generous and nice! Joel opened the purse and looked into it hopefully, as if a few more coins might appear in response to the force of his wishes.
Well, he had bought most of the things mom put on the list, and could she really be mad at him for wanting to get enough sweets for his siblings, too? Would she? He shuffled his paws with indecision.

The canine blinked. So he had more siblings? Well gee. How many did he actually have if he was worried about the money. She eyed the bit of money she had for herself. Maybe... If he didn't have too many siblings she could help?
"I can help if you want. Since you helped me with the Apple and everything." She said her tail wagging a bit. "I should have enough for two more. How many siblings do you have anyway?"
People did have large families and she technically had a half sibling. But really she never talked to her half sibling, and they only had a mother (father... it was confusing sometimes and she could never get it straight) in common. She eyed the other lollipops on the stand. If his sister was red and green what sort of realm was she from? Was that a rude thing to ask?
"And if you have more siblings than that you can always come back with your parents right?"

"Oh," Joel giggled, "that would be super nice of you, but I think my mom would be mad at me for taking your pocket money, too. You just can't win with moms sometimes, right?" He grinned, not terribly phased by the prospect of getting into trouble. "I have two brothers and one sister." He toyed with the coin purse, his expression briefly changing to one of concentration as he calculated the total cost of four lollies. He would have just enough.
After a moment he smiled again and started plucking the large swirled candies from the stand, throwing caution to the wind. "If mom really makes a fuss I'll just pay her back with my allowance." He shrugged, knowing that the offer would probably be enough to placate her since his intentions, candy for all his siblings, were reasonably noble. If he's spent the money just on himself that would be another matter entirely.
It was good to be a kid and live in a world where doing the right thing usually ended well, and family loved you even when you messed up. There were still some years to go before he would learn how rare this happy existence was in the real world.

Josephine frowned briefly. He was right, Mom's could do clever things like that. Though her Aunt was more prone to scolding her for that sort of thing. "True, true," she waved her dismissively. "And that's a nice amount of siblings. I only have my sister and a half sister."
She gave a shrug,
He seemed to have enough money for the candy, which was a good thing. Though she could try to offer to pay a little, she wasn't going to argue. That wasn't the point of having fun in a candy store.
Josephine managed to pay with relative ease, the candy man gave her a nice little bag that she could carry around without too much trouble. And he would provide the same sort of bag for Joel when he paid for everything.
Josephine's tail was wagging the entire time. This was one of the best outings she had had without her family. "Thanks for coming with me Joel," she said cheerfully.

"I'm not sure if any amount of siblings is really a good amount." Joel commented jovially. Siblings were one of those things grownups called 'mixed blessings'. As far as he could make out, a mixed blessing was something that was pretty fun, but also really, really annoying. His brothers and definitely his sister qualified on both counts. "It's fun playing with them but..." He parroted his mother in an exaggerated adult voice, "They can be quite a handful." Of course, she may have been speaking about Joel himself at the time...
Joel laughed and took his surprisingly heavy bag of candy. He would have to be careful with it, lest he drop the lollipops and shatter them into pointy candy shards. That would be no fun at all. Even though he would still eat them.
"You're welcome! This was really fun, even though I am not cute enough for free candy." In fact, this was the best trouble he'd gotten into in a long time. Ever since he got caught sneaking a look at some of Callie's lab results he'd been on the straight and narrow. As much as it was possible for a boisterous pre-teen boy to be, anyhow. "You should come over and play with me and my brothers sometime!" He offered, wiggling happily as he left the store.

"Okay! That sounds fun! Where do you live?" She asked as her tail wagged emphatically with joy. She had actually made a really cool friend at random. This almost never happened, and she would have to brag to Saffron. "If you ever want to come and play with my sister and me we live at the Court of Clubs most of the time. Mommy likes to leave us with our Auntie Sage."
Admittedly she had been told not to give out her information so freely. But that normally applied to adults after all. Sharing things with other kids was all right in her book, and she doubted that her mother would argue with such logic. They were kids, not serial killers.
Her ears drooped a bit when she suddenly realized that they would probably be parting ways after this point. Oh well, you couldn't win all of the time, and if they saw each other again this wouldn't be their last meeting.
