Seena made a low noise of assent, frowning thoughtfully. It was a common expression on her features when there was a problem that needed to be solved, like now, and it meant she was deep in thought and memory. She'd read some of those books of Heike's, though not all of them, perhaps. "I fear you are correct," she said, sitting up a little. "Let me look at the books as well, to see if there's anything we're overlooking." Of course, if she remembered correctly...but no, she resolved to read the passage she was thinking of again before coming to any conclusions. And also to wait until Shelby had given her the full story of how he had come to look like that.
She nodded grimly. "That would be for the best. Of course, if you accept him, the others will be forced to at least treat him as they do the other servants, but I fear behind your back they will not be as pleasant." She leaned into the kiss a bit, allowing herself that weakness...the weakness that Heike needed her for, so he could be strong. It wasn't something she'd understood when she was younger, but now she finally did, and no longer resented the moments when she must submit to her Jack utterly.
Recognizing the change of subject for what it was, she gave Heike a small smile. "Yes, worry not, my Jack. The Leverets didn't slack while you were gone. We even repaired that wall in the back bedroom." She sighed, and added, a bit more reluctantly, "No, I couldn't really sleep. Not even chamomile tea calmed me enough to take my rest."

The rabbit tried his hardest not to frown at the thought of what his warren would do behind his back to Shelby. They needed to figure out a solution that worked for everyone. But what was there to do ultimately? Shelby couldn't live here forever--and he honestly doubted his son wanted to be here forever.
He hushed the thoughts for the change of subject which made him feel better. A smile slipped onto his face as Seena spoke. She was sweet, and she had all her ducks in a row. It made everything better.
"I'm happy everything kept moving when I left. I was worried that something had gone wrong, and Shelby didn't help with his story about a ruined warren." He exhaled sharply. Should he give Seen more details about everything that happened? He could summarize what had gone on fairly well. "After everyone has a good night's rest I'll tell you what happened while I was searching for Fleur... unless you want a quick summary to ease your mind."

Seena was pleased to see the smile on Heike's face after confronting such grim subject matter. She thought she knew exactly how he felt. Sometimes all you could do to cope with a difficult situation was to put it out of your mind and focus on other things, like the mundane, daily tasks of running a Warren. She made a small noise of confirmation, and went to nuzzle his shoulder.
A ruined Warren? The poor child had been through a lot. And she certainly did want to know what had happened, both to her Jack and her son, but she made herself bite back the eager response and reply calmly. "If you wish to tell it, I do think it would ease my mind." And she knew she really needed to sleep that night. Perhaps, if she asked, Heike would stay the night with her? It was silly, but over the years she'd stopped lecturing herself for falling in love with him, and just accepted that his presence made certain things easier.

The rabbit sighed slightly as the Doe came to nuzzle his shoulder. He pulled her into a quick tight hug, and kissed her lightly on the forehead before pulling away. In the back of his head a little voice reminded him that there were plenty of things he needed to do before he had a chance to sleep. And most of them were responsibilities that couldn't be ignored.
He gave a small nod when her reply came. He didn't expect anything less. He might have to visit Igni and Rhosyn before going to bed too. He was sure they would want to speak with him as well, and if one of them had caught sight of Shelby....
Though he was sure he would have heard something....
He brushed the thoughts aside. "Well, I suppose I should start with the Card palace...." The rabbit quietly summarized the events that occurred, skimming various parts that involved having having his life in danger. He ended with the appearance of Shelby by strange means.
"It was a long walk home."

Seena leaned into him. She knew that her wish was primarily a selfish one, since he had other things to do, and that was why she didn't give voice to it. Not yet, at any rate. When he pulled away, she sat up, ears tilted slightly forward in attention. She listened as he told his story, quiet, eyes thoughtful and worried, and perhaps just a little bit excited. There were things he was speaking of that she'd only read about before, like the existence of Card Courts and of Cards who could change their shapes into something different.
So he hadn't been with Shelby most of the time...that made sense, then. He must have been just as confused when he first saw the Leveret's new...changes. The Doe sat quietly, taking it all in. When he finished, she made a small, sympathetic noise. "I imagine that it must have been," she said softly, and shook her head. She could already feel tiredness from the past day catching up to her, and the sudden influx of new information didn't actually help much. She'd have to sleep on it, so to speak, to really absorb it.
"I am glad that you made it back safely," she said, then, because it seemed an appropriate thing to say.

Heike smiled for a moment, it was the only thing he could think to do. The exhaustion was starting to creep up on him and he was running out of proper words. He refrained from sighing as he pulled the Doe into yet another hug.
"I'm glad that somethings worked out without incident," He whispered. The rabbit pulled away, "Now... you should probably get some rest. You look utterly exhausted, and I still have a little bit of work to do. Where... will you be sleeping tonight, by the way Seena?"
Hopefully that statement didn't sound too desperate. He wanted a bit of company so he didn't have to face the next morning alone. There was still dread over the situation with Shelby, and it would be nice to tackle the problem at least with a tiny bit of cheer first thing in the morning.

Seena indulged the next hug, and from the look in his eyes, now, she could tell it may be the last for a bit. He was going to make her go to bed while he went to work on something, and his next statement made that clear. For just the briefest moment, rebellion flamed in her heart, but she forced it away. Heike was wise, and she had already taken on too many burdens this night. She wouldn't be much use to him in her current state. She could feel exhaustion creeping behind her eyelids, heavy and alluring.
But...hold up. That last sounded like a rather loaded question. Here, at least, she could take what small victory he would permit her. "Perhaps I shall keep your bed warm for you, my Jack?" she murmured, half lidding her eyes and looking up at him. Despite the sheets being clean, perhaps it would smell enough like Heike to help her doze while she waited for him to come to bed as well. Or maybe she'd just fall completely to sleep. It was certainly possible, with everything having been so draining. If she could put the news from her mind and focus only on the good part, that her Jack and her son were back home, perhaps it would be possible.

Heike felt a bit revealed when Seena caught the rather obvious hint that he had dropped. She didn't seem upset about it either. Though he was worrying unnecessarily and for once he knew it. Everything was something to worry about, and he was growing more exhausted with each passing minute.
"That would be lovely, only if you feel so inclined," he said with a small smile as he slowly stood up. "I need to get going. Hopefully I can do what I need to do quickly and I'll join you in a bit. Don't bother with the dirty dishes, a leveret will take care of it."
With that said, he gave her one more kiss before departing. He scooped up the box that contained his daughter's remains. He was reluctant but he didn't exactly have a proper place to keep the remains on ice. He buried her remains near the little place she was so fond of going to with her brother. He would have to find a decent way to mark the grave later, after that was settled he took to taking care of a few more random assorted tasks. All of them were done in a haze as he tried to mentally sort himself out.
After a small chat with his beloved sibling he finally went to bed.

Seena nodded. "I hope so. It has been a trying day for you, as well," she said softly, and leaned into the last kiss before he left the room. She sat there for just a moment longer, watching the door where he'd vanished from and allowing herself another moment of grief over her daughter. The tears came in complete silence, and she brushed them away with a paw when she had cried enough.
Tears wouldn't bring Fleur back, after all. Standing up and stretching, Seena hopped down off the couch and made her way to Heike's room, where she flopped into bed. She left enough room for Heike to climb in beside her, but little enough that when he did, he'd have to brush up against her. In this way she hoped to wake when he arrived.
Sleep claimed her quickly, and she slept deeply enough that when Heike finally got there, she barely stirred, only half waking up enough to snuggle close. But she'd be there in the morning to face the new day with him. And that was the most important thing.

He took a great deal of comfort in sleeping besides Seena. In the dead of night he had wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer in a form of comfort from his youth. Another warm body was just what he needed to get a decent night's sleep.
When he woke in the morning he did his best to unwrap his arms without making the doe uncomfortable. He had no doubt that the movement would actually wake her up, he had barely moved in the dead of night.
The rabbit glanced at the clock across the room. The hands indicating that he had slept in an hour longer than he usually did. For once he hardly felt guilty about it, the thoughts of yesterday were slowly seeping back into his head. Today was going to be harder than he wanted it to be, and there were problems to solve.
But at least he had had an extra hour of blissful sleep and Seena by his side.
