Diamonds? Damn. He never liked dealing with diamonds, with their lie detectors and other such things. It seemed he had little choice. He'd be calling more than one diamond today, then. Retrieving a blanket from a closet, he carefully put it on the girl to keep her warm. Promising he would be back, he hastily found some parchment and pen.
In need of a doctor at my residence for a serious laceration on a young child. Send help immediately. In addition, send word to the Court of Diamonds to find any 'Highness' avian that admits to parentage or guardianship of an Avington Bat child.
Taking the message, he rolled it up and went outside, pulling a carrier pigeon out of its roost before attaching the note to his leg and sending it off. That particular one knew to go to the doctor's office. It hadn't failed him yet.
A rattling on the roof caught his attention. Glancing up, he saw the angry Jubjub, chain caught up in the storm drain. Well, at least she was catchable. It took several minutes of coaxing her from her perch and untangling her until he could bring her in. The creature gave an angry hiss at the sight of the Avington girl on the couch, but Merlin was able to put her up in her cage before she got too riled up. "Hush, you silly creature." He muttered, slipping a dried brain wafer into her tray to appease her.
He looked over his shoulder at the girl, watching to make sure her chest was still rising and falling. "I've sent for the doctor. They should be here soon, so I will need you to be brave and hang in there for me."

Mirriam mumbled something else as the blanket was set over her, but she seemed pretty out of it. Probably from the blood loss and the pain that awoke if she moved too much. The little bat snuggled down under the blanket a bit, careful to keep her neck as still as possible, which was easier with the odd feeling of something wrapped around it to remind her of her injury. She actually drifted on the edge of unconsciousness for a bit, though she gave a little start at the hiss, shrinking back a bit. The rat-vulture was back and looking as angry as ever. She wasn't sure what she'd done to make it so upset...
She looked blearily up at the man, eyes wide and filled with childish hope. She kind of missed Mr. Birdy-Man right now. "I will, sir," she mumbled. Her gaze flicked to the cage. "Is that rat-vulture your pet? Why is he so grumpy all of the time..." Her eyes began to close slightly, and she licked her lips, her mouth feeling dry and tasting like something gross and salty and metallic. She would have asked for juice, but it hurt to talk, which made her sad. She liked talking and wanted to do more of it with the nice man that had saved her!

Merlin wasn't always as keen to people's needs, but he didn't miss the dry smacking and licking of lips of the small form. Wordlessly, he got up and went to the kitchen, rummaging through his ice box. He didn't have any chilled water handy.. and the city water was quite questionable; another reason he was keen on moving.
Luckily, there was some apple juice in the back. Merlin fancied himself more a carnivore than anything, but he'd bought the stuff very much on a whim. He sniffed it, sipped it.. yeah. Still good. He poured some into a little glass and brought it out to the girl.
"Here. I have something for you to drink... I'm going to sit you up a little..." Setting the drink down, he carefully helped her sit somewhat upright, packing a pillow or two behind her. Having where the wound was at being higher than her heart was actually quite important; he'd wished he'd remembered that sooner. Finally, once she was comfortable, he held the glass to her lips. "It's apple juice."
Anxious, he looked at the clock. No.. the doctor wouldn't have gotten word yet. Pigeons could only fly so fast. Then.. what about this child's guardian? There was a part of him that certainly didn't want to deal with an angry parent. He had half a mind to have his things out of the house and gone before he even got word... or perhaps he'd have the doctor take the girl with her so the man would never know where he lived. Ah yes... paranoia. So much fun.

Mirriam would have protested if she'd felt stronger when Merlin suddenly left again. He'd just gotten back! She made a feeble noise in the back of her throat, but he was back sooner than she could even think of moving. Her eyes brightened a bit at the thought of something to drink, no matter what it was, and she allowed him to help her into a more vertical position.
She gave a happy little chirp upon discovering it was apple juice (her favorite! along with any other type of fruit juice) ears perking as she leaned forward to lap at it happily. Her energy returned a little as she was able to get liquid and sugar to begin to replenish what she'd lost. She still felt a bit...off, and she'd rather be hanging upside down, but she sensed that this was one of the situations where she should listen to the adult. She had just had...hey, it was kind of an adventure, huh? More of one than she'd wanted, maybe...but now she actually had a battle scar! She'd been wounded in the line of duty! Already, as she sipped the juice, her imagination was hard at work reshaping her little adventure into something more worthy of a superhero's first major injury. Her eyes bright, she smiled distractedly but happily at Merlin, still in a bit of pain, but it wasn't as bad now as it had been, now that it was no longer bleeding.

Every day was a different one, another list of unknowns that she'd have to deal with one at a time. Some days, Zenon went home early. Some days, she stayed on until the next morning just because of how many emergencies demanded her attention. Today was boring. That was, until the pigeon flapped in, and one of her coworkers called her over. After all, she was familiar with the residence. She'd been there before. An amused smile curled at her beak. So his damn bird'd injured a child now? Wasn't that just a beautiful picture... The hybrid gathered her medical kit together and headed out for the second house-call she'd had in months. It seemed hilarious to her that they'd both be at the same place, conceivably caused by the same ill-tempered pet. This time, the trip to the ramshackle house seemed much quicker, and Zenon knocked on the door with much less irritation. Hah, this would be fun. As soon as the man opened the door, she'd clack her beak and give him a thoughtful look, her red eyes bright. " I hear your bird doesn't discriminate based on the age of the brains.[/b]"

Merlin found himself succumbing to the social reflex of smiling, lips peeling back to show teeth in a harsh, canine grin. If it wasn't the most soothing of grins, he at least tried to make up for it with a soft pat on her tiny little wing.
And so he sat there, next to her.. he really had nothing better to do as he leaned up against the armrest of the couch, offering juice when she made any gesture for it. Of course, as he was prone to doing when he was able to sit down, he felt his eyes drooping, nearly dozing off.
A knock on the door startled him, eyes wide as he scrambled to his feet. Archimedes gave an angry shriek from her cage. "Quiet, you." Merlin barked, uncharacteristically irritable after all the things that had transpired.
He.. seemed to wither just a little at her comment, strange, bog-like eyes giving a slight roll in their sockets before he was able to regain his composure with a sardonic grin. "I'll have you know that it's the young brains she prizes most. But in all seriousness, if Archimedes had wanted her brains.. she would have had them. The girl merely startled the jubjub."
Moving aside, he let her in, giving a cursory glance at his chest. The symbol was in fact there. Sometimes he forgot whether he was wearing it or not.

Mirriam was certainly glad someone so -nice- was taking care of her! She finished the juice in short order, and then, nuzzled into the comfortably familiar green and cream fur of the other man. Still thinking about superheros and battles and cool stuff like that, the little bat's brown eyes slowly closed...
She gave a small, startled squeak when there was a knock on the door, forced out of the light doze she had also been in, jolting a bit and wings fluttering instinctively. Her ears flicked forward, and she worked her jaw, wincing a bit as a fresh wave of pain hit. Looking down, there was a bit of red soaking the bandage. Apparently the small jump had aggravated the cut enough for it to start bleeding again. Who was at the door, though? Mirriam moved a little, crawling forward on the couch, a bit out of the blanket. Her large bat ears caught the sounds of another voice, rather gravelly, alongside the deep one of the man whose house she was in. She also heard the screeching of the rat-vulture, but ignored it. That thing was bad, so she was going to ignore it until it decided to be nicer!

Hah, so she'd found a nerve, even if it was a small one. The man was a damned brick wall, Zenon had found, and it would only be with constant chipping that she found what made his emotions tick. She'd figure him out someday, she was confident in that.
A seriousness slipped over her expression and she looked at the man, her brows furrowing. "I believe that.[/b]" she replied quietly, slipping into the house. Still smelled like vinegar. At least some things didn't change. Slowly, she made her way to where the patient was, casting a gaze at the bird in the corner, her expression mistrusting. She hadn't exactly been comfortable with the damn thing before, and now it had gone and lacerated a child. Who, by the sounds of it, was of some relation to the Diamond Court.
It just kept getting better, didn't it?
Slowly, the hybrid moved to the small Bat's side, giving her a reassuring smile and settling onto her haunches. Dealing with children was a pain, she had to actually put on a little bit of a good impression. Charm laced her words when the woman began to speak. "Hey there, sweetie. I'm here to clean you up and make sure you're gonna be alright, okay? Can you come a little closer?" if she could catch Merlin's eyes, she'd give him an irritated glare.

Oh, he caught it alright, and he wrinkled his nose at her for some juvenile reason in rebuttal. He wasn't sure if she was getting onto him, or not happy about the fact she had to deal with a kid, but as far as he was concerned he wasn't at fault for this whole mess. After all.. where was the guardian?
"Don't worry... ah.. little girl." The realization had struck him that he hadn't even asked her her name.. then again, the girl could hardly seem to talk, and things had happened so fact. "This is the same doctor that patched me up when I got into a little scuffle with the very same bird. She'll take care of you."
Merlin certainly had no reason to doubt her ability. The wound had healed up magnificently into the thinnest of scars, enough so that his fur covered it. That certainly pleased him; he had taken the best of care not to get too terribly gapped up training the thing.

Mirriam looked up, ears twitching and eyes bright with curiosity, and she looked very much as if she wanted to say something to the new Card that had just entered the house. She was pretty, all those dark, deep colors and a large beak, but paws too. The little bat had never seen anything like her. She gave her best, friendliest smile to the doctor, because Mommy had used to tell her to always be calm and friendly to Doctors, since their feelings got hurt easily if you screamed or struggled. She started to nod at the words, but that hurt a bit, so she instead opted for slowly and carefully moving forward, exposing the deep gash on her neck, which was, sure enough as Zenon would see, bleeding once more.
One large, radar like ear flicked towards the other nice man as he spoke, and she wondered briefly why he had called her that when...oh no! She realized she'd never told the man her name! It must have been forgotten among everything else, she had just been through an Adventure, after all! "I'm not worried, silly," she said, a bit more carefully than normal, as she was trying not to move her jaw too much. "And you can just call me Mirriam okay?"
