Merlin had only made a half- motion toward his chair when the doctor asked about food things. Sweet things? He stood there for a few moments, seeming obviously unsure as to whether he'd even owned something sweet. Well, it wouldn't hurt to check. Surely he had -something- in the house... Hadn't he just went out to the grocer merely a week ago? He gave a short nod before heading to the kitchens.
Hm.. something sweet.... He wasn't much for candy and didn't have anything around. Pure sugar? Of course not. Finally, he found some croissants. It was bread though.. but sweet things could surely be put on them yes? He found a jar of honey in the cupboard and drizzled the stuff over the croissants before carrying it in and removing yet -more- books from the coffee table to make room.
Merlin fixed himself a cup of tea, taking a long breath to compose himself before taking a sip. All this excitement left him feeling drained. "I take it a message was sent to the Courts?" He asked, glancing to the corvid hybrid.

Mirriam frowned, or tried to at least, shaking her head lightly at the question so that her ears flopped. "No, he wasn't with me today, I haven't seen him since I left this morning and he was reeeaaaally busy and stuff with all that paperwork." She wasn't sure what precisely paperwork was, only that it involved a lot of, well, paper, and that the Kings and Queens and Jacks seemed to have a whole lot of it all the time.
Her eyes lit up at the prospect of something sweet, even if her mouth was still a little weird and she wasn't sure how well she could chew it, but at least she could taste it? She wiggled, wondering what it would be. "Fruit juice?" she squeaked hopefully, watching as the nice Mr. Merlin got up again to get something. When he came back, she was mildly disappointed to see...bread. Not cake, just weird breakfast bread. The ones that looked like crescent moons but...oh...her nose wiggled as she -did- smell something sweet, and she clawed her way over to investigate.
"Thank you, Mr. Merlin," she said politely, remembering some manners at least, and then delicately stuck out her tongue to lick. Oooh, that -was- sweet and very good too! She hooked her claws in one of the croissants and pulled it closer so she could lick the honey off, though her mouth was feeling less...well, feeling-less by the minute.

Not in the Capital? Well, wasn't that interesting. Zenon's ears pulled back slightly for the briefest of moments before she forced herself to calm once again. How had the girl ended up in the Capital, if her guardian was still at the Court? Either this little bat was very sneaky, or her guardian was very inattentive, and either way the Corvie-hybrid was feeling quite displeased. Unattended children irritated people, which was interesting to watch, but they also got themselves into trouble which in turn irritated her.
That was far less fun. Ah, well. At least this one seemed to be safe, at least for now.
She shifted, hooking her talons around one mug and then settling back into the chair, her eyes closing as she sniffed at the tea. It was a blend she didn't recognize, but then she tended only to drink the most highly caffeinated varieties, using it generally as a tool to stay awake rather than something to relax with. She didn't necessarily expect an Avington living in the Capital to have any of that just laying around, however, and in this situation she could just relax.
"It sounds as if our Miss Mirriam is quite the explorer. Did you fly here all alone?[/b]" She asked the question without any trace of bite, deciding she'd get the answers on her own. Perhaps she'd scold this Mr. Birdy later, perhaps not. It all depended. Absently, she took a long sip of the tea, holding it in her beak. Ahhh. Felt nice, tasted mild. That was good. She set the cup down, her gaze flicking up to Merlin as the man spoke. Then she nodded. "Indeed. With any luck, the message will reach him soon, though... The Court is quite a distance from here...[/b]"
Hmm. Hopefully this King would travel quickly. Otherwise, they could be waiting a while. She glanced at Mirriam, watching the bat lap up the honey, and made a soft noise. "Mirriam, let me know if it starts to hurt, alright? I have some pills you can take if it gets bad.[/b]" Advil, but no one needed to know that. She just wasn't comfortable giving an addictive substance to a child, not without parental permission of some kind.

Merlin watched the corvie hybrid's expression from where he sat, hunched over his hot cup of tea as he idly swirled a claw in it to disperse the cream. Had she reached the same conclusion that he had about the girl? Surely if she'd been able to so easily escape her Guardian's clutches and find her way into his lawn, he was in no way legally in trouble by this... mess.
ears flicking, he stole a glance toward the cheerful little girl. she didn't seem to be in very much pain, but the still swollen and stitched up flesh was enough to send his fur on end. Hopefully this man from the Court would not feel any need to drill him with that harsh diamond ability of his.
His finger took to anxiously rapping against the arm of the chair. He wasn't entirely sure how long they'd been here, but he'd never had to entertain company for this long in his home. Reaching for his pipe, he looked at it for a moment before realizing the company he was in before setting it back down. Hmph.

Mirriam giggled a bit at the silly ideas of the Doctor. She was nice, but very silly! "Of course I didn't fly here by myself. I was with Miss Melissa. She's a cleaning lady at the Palace. But she got caught up making pretty eyes at one of the vendors, tryin' to get him to kiss her or give her a free necklace or something, and I was able to escape and explore a bit!" the Bat replied cheerfully. "I found this place and came to see the veggie garden because all the plants looked sad. But then I saw the mean ol' Rat-bird in a tree and I didn't know he was mean so I tried to say hi."
She still had the version of the story she was going to tell everyone back home in her head, but it would be silly to try and tell Mr. Merlin that he was a prince and she had rescued him right now! He, like most adults, would probably not appreciate the genius of the story. As she wiggled around and lapped up honey, her chest would be visible, and there, standing out clearly...was a red 8 where before there had only been a 7. Though none of the people present might notice the change unless they had been paying special attention to her Rank. It was safe to say Mirriam herself had no idea yet.
((ooc: so, we can probably wrap this up pretty quickly...do you want me to ask Jenn if she could maybe come in and make a post or two?))

It went without saying that Melissa would not be working for the palace of Diamonds very long after this escapade. In fact, Khushrenada would be making it a personal mini-crusade to see that the woman became unemployable by any self-respecting Court or household. Allowing a child in her care - specifically left in her care because she volunteered for the task - to wander by herself in a city as varied and dangerous as the Capital...
No. This woman would be leaving her post in grievous shame.
The King made his way through a city neighborhood, glancing down at the missive in his hands every now and again. He tried to hold a pleasant enough expression for the benefit of the passerby, but his worry and his anger were both hard to contain. Mirriam was such a curious child by nature. She could have gotten into anything! And apparently, this 'anything' had required the attentions of a doctor.
It was quite, quite late by the time he arrived at Merlin's address and knocked on the door. His feathers kept threatening to stand on end, but he consciously smoothed everything down and greeted the person who answered the door with impeccable manners. He couldn't help the twitching of his gaze, however, as he tried to catch sight of his ward. He would be nothing short of restless until he saw that she remained in one piece.
The doctor would be well-paid. He had brought money with him for such an occasion, as well as an invitation to the palace of Diamonds should they wish for a meeting and personal thanks. The owner of the home would likewise be compensated for his troubles and the care shown to Mirriam, whose spirits seemed undaunted by the misadventure. Tired, but undaunted.
He would need to keep a closer eye on things.
((I'm /so sorry/ for taking so long. ;__; Many apologies. Here he is. *flees!*))

The girl truly -was- endearing, and even with his nerves absolutely on the fritz. "Well, if it is of any consolation, I believe you scared her as much as she scared you! Sadly, Archimedes is equipped with much sharper claws." He tactfully avoided the doctor's gaze, just in case she had a glare for him.
When the door gave a mighty knock, Merlin shot out of his seat, nearly knocking things over in the process. Archimedes gave a soft growl from her perch, but a particularly vicious look from her handle silenced the creature. The last thing he needed was his beast setting off warning screeches while a high ranking individual of the Courts visited his abode. His.. cluttered abode. Should he have made an attempt to clean?
The many locks made quite a ruckus as he unlatched each one, pulling the somewhat resisting door open with a quick pull. Merlin muttered his own quick greetings, though his ears immediately angled back toward his skull as the bird angled so obviously to see over his shoulder. He had nothing to hide.. or that's what he kept telling himself. Merlin hastily took a step back to let the man in, though his words were already rattling out to prepare the man for what he would see.
" I trust this physician with my personal wellbeing; I wanted to make sure your ward received the best care for her injury." It could have been so much worse.. A little voice sounded off in his head; a pesky one that often questioned his ownership of such a dangerous pet.
