She listened to all of the directions with her full attention, taking careful notes before complying with the female’s whims.
Taking the dried herbs Mnem had shown her a moment before she proceeded to split them up into two piles before placing each half into a different jar, adding the oil to both before sealing them both carefully. After she had finished that she did as she was told, placing one inside of the oven after placing a glove on. Turning to face Mnem she cocked her head to the side taking in the strange – though not uncommon - sound.
“The back staircase does sound safer.” She replied with a nod. Waiting for Mnem to lead the way she gathered up the other jar that was to go on the roof. “I will be quite.” she added when Mommy Mnem mentioned that she did not want her waking up Iphis.

They made it up to the roof in perfect silence. It never ceased to amaze Mnem how quickly and efficiently she had Minh had taken over the apartment complex, from top to bottom. At first, they had just inhabited one apartment on a higher floor, with Minh's labs in the attic area, but as they slowly drove the other tenants out, they had just spread into the space. A lot of the rooms in the complex were still unoccupied, but no new people ever came to stay--there were horror tales of ever-growing complexity involving demon plants and mutant banders and strange explosions.
So they had taken the complex and added odd little side-rooms, staircases, crawl spaces. Doors that went nowhere. Strange architectual whimsy that had piled up over the years. The roof was mostly Mnem's, though, for some of the plants that needed the most sunshine and fresh air. It was a bright greenhouse, with a few of Minh's odder creations lurking about, and Mnem showed Elyse to one of the smaller plant beds.
"Put it in the soil," she said. "You'll be in charge of watching it for the next couple of weeks. Make sure that it doesn't get cooked too much."

Following the canine through the maze that was their building they both made their way towards the roof. The mouse had not been up on the roof before so she was taken aback by all the plants that Mnem had, virtually using the area as a green house. She had figured that they had a roof, every building did afterall, but she had no clue it was being used for this – and after discovering why she was not amazed that Mnem had never let them up here. Mommy Mnem was sure to kill one of them if on of her plants got destroyed. She made a mental note to come back up – though from what Mnem had just told her of her new responsibility it did not seem like it would be something hard to do.
Placing the jar in the soil she made sure it was in a sunny part but not so much as to where it would fry quickly. “How will I know when it is done?” She asked, curious to know so she did not allow it to overcook.

"The color will deepen," she replied, nodding at the jar. "The texture will change a bit. When this particular oil is ready, the color should be a dark russet. Now, I have a mixture already ready to go. I'll show you how to make it this time, and you can make it on your own twice more then your salves are ready."
She took them back down the kitchen, and pulled out her own jar of oil. This one had been cooked in the sunlight, and she had just taken it down in the morning.
"We'll need to make sure our pan is completely free of moisture." She turned the stove on, wiped down the pan with a dry rag, and placed it on the burner. The sequence was so familiar that she almost forgot to keep up a running commentary for Elyse's benefit. "The stove should be on very low heat. We use beeswax. About an eighth of a cup for each cup of the oil. A little less, in this case, because we want the slave to be a bit softer." She grabbed a few other jars of liquid. "We'll be adding these as well. Watch closely."

She adjusted the mixture that was now placed in the soil ready to prepare cooking. Making a mental note of what the canine said she noted the dark russet color before following her downstairs again.
When Mnem pulled out a jar that had finished she made perked her ears in interest. This looked to be the fun part. She watched with intent eyes on everything Menm did, especially when she forgot to commentary for a moment. Stove on low, wipe down pan for no moisture, place said pan on burner. That all seemed like it would be easy enough.
Once Mnem grabbed the beeswax along with the other various liquids she stepped closer to better observe what was going to happen next. It was a good thing that she had a good memory, she was not sure how many times Mnem would show her the same procedure. “So the amount of beeswax will control how soft or hard a salve will be?” she asked, curios and seeking confirmation.

"Yes," she said, gently stirring around the beeswax and oil in the pan. "We're going to keep it going until the wax is melted, and then we're going to add our other ingredients here. We'll keep the recipe fairly simple to begin with."
The melting and mixing did not take very long. When everything was blended, Mnem turned the burner off and the hair grabbed the jars, setting them down next to her. "Now, we're going to put them in here, and we'll need to let them cool. Always keep them out of sunlight, at this point; it will only ruin them. Now, you'll get to try this out for yourself soon." Her smile was a bit too wide. "I hope you paid attention. Most salves follow that basic format. If you master that, all the particulars will follow fairly easily. Take the jars away, and I'll show you some different kinds of rash-salves you can make."

She watched closely to what Mnem did, melting the beeswax and then adding the other ingredients as well as placing them into the different jars. No more sunlight for the salve, got it, she thought to herself making a mental note.
At Mnem’s smile – that did not look completely friendly – she returned a smile. “I shall try my hardest.” She was pretty sure that she had managed to observe everything that Mnem had done . . . so it should not be too much of a problem. Hopefully. Either way she was going to try her hardest . . . and hopefully her hardest would not equal explosions or lost limbs. Those results seemed like they would contradict the original goal.
It was good to hear that all of the salves followed the same basic makeup, which was definitely sure to make things easier when creating salves in the future.

Mnem did not quite take to instruction, even with a more-than-competent pupil, and she found herself at points wishing that Elyse would screw up in a major way so she could be quits of the whole teaching business and go back to more solitary work. But that seemed destined not to be. What Elyse wasn't good at, she picked up fairly swiftly. Her salves turned out well. Her plant identification was good. So they took the next step.
"Some poisons require very specific antidotes." She set a woody-stemmed plant down in front of Elyse. "This is cassava. The roots are quite delicious when prepared correctly. The leaves contain cyanide. Ingested over a long period of time, it causes permanent paralysis. If one manages to get a very large dose of cyanide into someone--lights out. A cure for poisoning is fairly easy to make, comparatively speaking." She glanced upstairs. "We'll get to break into your mother's lab."

She knew that it took a lot to work with plants but it still amazed her just how much knowledge it was. She had required to name several varieties of plants, their uses, flavors, affects, and their properties in being a healing or poisonous. Not to mention the different salves she had to make. Having written them down as Mnem informed her, or as soon as she was able to, there had been many a night that she had stayed up studying and reviewing.
When Mnem plopped the newest plant before her, she tilted her head in consideration. This looked like it was going to be interesting fun. At her comment that they were going to break into Minh’s lab she was both intrigued and a little afraid. Mommy had made it specifically known when they were little that no one was ever to go in there, though often times Eir and Ira had neglected to follow those rules.
“Oh?” she said, both in a questioning tone as well as a interested one.
