It took a very short time for air to rush back into his lungs, and after the nearly two minutes of deprivation, it quite sweet indeed, and he breathed as rapidly and deeply as possible. Iphis sat up and wiped tears out of his eyes. The funny feeling was going away, even though the blotches and bumps were still there. He knew Elyse and Mom wouldn't let anything really awful happen. Like death. Death would have been a downer.
Allergic, Elyse had said, and he looked to his mother. For a less than a microsecond Iphis could have sworn he saw something like a tiny flash of contrition on her features, but passed that off as a trick of the near-death and drugs. Mnem frowned immediately.
"So, in the future, you should avoid strawberries," she said, as though Iphis had done something quite terrible and this was his lesson learned. Mnem looked at the pie. Iphis did too.
"I was nearly killed by pie." It was said curiously, with a certain wonderment. Pie. Strawberry rhubarb pie. Death by pie.
"Yes. And death by fruit would have been terribly fitting, too. It appears you have inherited my wretched body's aversion to strawberries." Terrible pity, too. They were Mnem's favorite fruit. She stood. "Congratulations, Elyse. I release you from my care. Get thee gone. Go into the world and heal. And don't come back. You won't need to ask me any questions. Ever." She looked down at her son, mulled over a thought for a moment, and said, "Grab Clara and the rest of your fu--your little friends. I'm going to grab the key lime tart and we'll have a tea party. Elyse, you're welcome to join."
