Oh, #*&@. The attack wasn't entirely unexpected, but Shinrai hadn't expected the murderous look in Aderlass' eyes. Because of that, he hesitated a moment longer than he probably should have. The shorter man hit him with a hard thump; the blow itself didn't hurt, but the equine had a moment of brief panic when the mouse's hands hit his sides. He was relieved to discover that Aderlass still had his gloves on. At least he didn't have to worry about being burned with the mouse's strange hands.
The stallion slid one foot forward, quickly slipping it back behind Aderlass', then he shoved forward on the mouse's shoulders, a hard push to throw the other man off his balance and, hopefully, to the ground. Rai didn't want to hurt his friend, but he wasn't going to let the other man hurt him either.

His murderous intent was erased from his mind as he actually managed in succeeding, to some degree, in his attack. His mind laden with too much alcohol to really grasp at the situation he found himself struggling against the horse trying to catch is balance, more than actually trying to cause him bodily harm. It did not cross his mind to attack the horse further nor would it even occur to him to pull off the protective gloves on his hands.
Struggling against his opponent, it caught him off guard when the horse slid his foot behind his, swiftly causing the mouse to tumble back. As he fell he tried to catch himself, grasping at whatever his hands could cling to. Finding nothing that would hold his weight the mouse fell to the ground.
Gasping in indignation he looked up to glare at the equine he narrowed his eyes. How dare he!

Rai sighed, pleased that the action had worked; with the mouse's lower center of gravity, he hadn't been certain he could manage it without seriously hurting his friend. Still, Aderlass didn't seem anymore pleased about being down on the ground than he had about being emotionally prodded. Too bad the equine wasn't finished.
"Whoa, ho!" the stallion called, drawing closer to the mouse and leaning forward a little ways. He was still a few feet back; he should be far enough that if Aderlass lunged at him again he could get out of the way. Supposedly. "Is that the best you can do, Aderlass? Is that all you did in defense of your friend?"
As far as the Marshdweller could tell, they needed to burn off the edge of Aderlass' rage and sorrow; maybe by blunting that he could get the mouse back into his normal state of mind and, thus, able to deal with wotever it was that had happened.

When the horse had drawn closer to his own form on the ground and tormented him further with his haunting words he gave a growl as a response. Of course he had not stood by . . . well he had but it was not by choice. Things had happened so quickly. Cursing his inability to move quickly he was determined to prove to the male that his words were wrong as he slowly pulled himself up off of the ground.
Standing once again the mouse continued to mentally curse as he found himself still swaying. Why could there not have been anything easier that would erase the pain but would not leave his limbs affected so? Not feeling up to flinging himself back at the horse just yet he decided to throw words back at him instead.
“And why is it . . . that you care so much, huh?”

Rai grew still at that indignant question, and he drew himself upright to stare hard at the red mouse before him. "I care because I view you as a friend. And because Minh is worried about you. And because you're not the only one to have lost someone close to you."
Could it be that Aderlass was ready to listen? The stallion certainly hoped so and he took a few, cautious steps closer to the other man. "I wanted to die for a very long time, but Elias forced me to snap out of that," he continued carefully. He couldn't tell if the words were making any sort of change in the drunken Morganberry. Blast it. "*$ happens," he said suddenly. "People die. And all you can do is pick up the pieces and move on. You can't sit and beat yourself up or... or drink yourself to death!"

The horse’s words drew him up short. He saw him as a friend? That was not something he had expected to hear from the horse’s mouth.
Startled by that statement he paid close attention to Whip’s next words. Who was this Elias that the horse spoke about? Could it be possible that the horse actually knew of the pain he was going through? The two of them had not seen much of each other in more then passing and thus they did not speak much of their personal lives.
Who was it that the horse had known who had died? From his words it seemed that it had been someone close. Finding himself sobering under some of the words, though the alcohol had not receded any, his hands lowered themselves to a much less defensive position, his anger drained for now.
“How?” He finally managed to say. He did not mean how for whomever it was that Whip had lost, that was a story for another time; he was asking the horse how did one move on. The pieces seemed impossible to gather and the journey ahead forgotten.

Rai's ears flicked back hesitantly, as he tried to figure out exactly how to answer that exceedingly vague question. However, he didn't want to explain exactly who had died, so he chose to answer how El had forced him to get over things.
"Mostly be eating poison," he answered wryly, crossing his arms over his chest and shifting his weight back slightly. Aderlass seemed calm for now, and so he would react to that in faith. Here's hoping the mouse didn't decide to catch him offguard. "So if you think I'm being hard on you, just stop and think about -that- for a little bit. I could get some of those same poisons and make -you- eat them as well."
The stallion's tail flicked idly against his hocks. Despite how horrible that might sound, those were some of the best days of his youth; ironically or not.

The horse was crazier then he had first thought or ever imagined. He had recovered from a death by eating poison? And the dared to call his drinking himself to oblivion crazy? And this creature was breeding? That was something that made the mouse fear for his children . . . though considering the female who was carrying them . . . which one was the lesser of two evils?
“Just how psycho are you?” he asked, tilting his whole head to the side in surprise and confusion. Who in their right mind would willing intake poison? That was more suicidal if you asked him and he would gladly take his alcohol over that any day. “If you feed me poison, especially if it kills me, I will be sure to take you with me.”
He sincerely doubted that if the horse decided to do just that that he would stay oblivious to the situation. But it never hurt to make sure the horse knew the mouse was not going to take things easily?

Triangular ears flipped towards the red mouse in disbelief. "Me, the psycho? Me? Not only am I not the one trying to commit suicide through liver failure, I also did not simply choose to start eating poison at a young age, and at this point, I think it would serve you -right- to have to endure the things I did in order to get my head back on straight, because it's more than obvious that yours is currently on backwards." Perhaps that was a bit of a touchy subject.
Grey-green eyes narrowed abruptly. "And I wouldn't choose a poison to kill you, dear friend--" A slight bite of sarcasm marked those words. "My choices would be full of pain and suffering but most assuredly survival. I didn't haul your twice *#!&ed tail out here just to kill you!"
