Retirement did not suit Malachior in the least. Idle hands drove him crazy, his own idle hands were even worse. He needed something to do before he truly went mad. So he would return to the Courts and offer his assistance to the Lysaras. It would be a pleasure to see the lovely Queen again and even more of a pleasure to be doing something productive. The buck had returned to the Capital with the intention of refreshing his knowledge of the current members of his Court and what changes may have appeared since his long departure. The Queen of Hearts had been murdered, apparently, and a good deal of other power shifts and tragedies. His return would come at an interesting time and Lysaras would surely be thankful for the familiar figure. It would appear, however, that he had not slipped into town unnoticed and his 'wonderful' brother appeared to have let on to that his equally charming niece that he was in town. Oh joy. If he was lucky, he could slip out of his town house and back to the Courts before he could have the misfortune of her visit.

Dilis dreaded going to see her uncle Malachior; she dreaded it so much that she started feeling a pit in her stomach as she walked to his town home in Capital City. She did not have much choice in the matter though because the Courts shunned her, her Father refused to talk to her… she was alone and without a place to stay for the night. She walked slowly toward his home, rubbing her pearls in anxiousness and knocked on his door. She knew he probably did not want to see her but again… her choices were limited. There was something about him that always frightened her a little… it was like that since she was little. It did not help that he towered over her most of her life and she only now was closer (however little that was) to his height since she had gained her bipedal forms.

The afternoon was growing late and with evening Malachior lit a fire and leaned into his recliner to read. He would be going to the Court of Spades come morning and had packed up all his important research material for the trip which left him with nothing to do but read and relax until he slept.
Or, to his dismay, until a knock sounded lightly at the door.
There was something in that flutter of knocks that was agonizingly familiar and he heaved a miserable sigh before rising up. She had found him then, hadn't she? His brother had undoubtedly told her he was in town if he had spent the time sending him a letter. Damnable.
The King rose up and strolled to the door, pulling it open in order to stare coldly at the feline standing outside. Damnable. "Dilis. What brings you here at this hour?" For now he kept his tone even and cordial, willing to play 'good uncle' for the time being.

Uncle Malachi opened the door and she just stared at him… pathetic. He was the one person who knew how to make her absolutely terrified of him. But today… he was oddly calm and that scared her even more. Why was he being so nice? Only one way to find out she thought. “Uncle Malachi… I-wel-I… wondered if maybe I could stay the night tonight. Father is not speaking to me and I have nowhere else to go…” She looked up at him with big pitiful eyes hoping just once he would help her in her time of need… though she doubted he would.
“Father said that if I stepped foot in Avington, he would know and have me promptly removed by police. I just… am not sure what to do…. I messed up so badly at the Courts…” At this point, tears were welling up in her eyes and the only thing that was stopping her from bawling was the fact that her Uncle was not the type to take pity… on anyone.

Malachior stood before Dilis and took in her words with silent disapproval. Until, quite suddenly, he found himself laughing at the girl's foolishness. Even her father had kicked her out? Threatened to have the police toss her out of the region?
Did she even know that he didn't have the power to do that?
Most likely not. Foolish twit, so obviously the fruit of his brother's loin.
Now, however, that he had finished laughing at her misfortune, he instead took the girl in for what she'd become. Still just a pathetic Club, but she'd at least gained her biped form and her Jack. Messed up in the Courts though? He would have to find out more about that.
"Is that so? Come in then, I don't care." Malachior snorted with quiet bemusement and pulled back, opening the door so that she could follow him inside. "Close the door behind you, girl, and tell me: what have you done in the Courts that you could so soil your father's doting affection for the time being?"

Oh dear, he was making that face again… it was the kind of face that told her he was either going to let her have it or mock her. Luckily it turned into laughter, it could have easily ended with him tossing her on her behind. He still terrified her.
“Th-thank you Uncle.” She slowly walked inside and closed the door behind her as instructed. She sat down daintily on the closest seat and began her story.
“Well, I knew Queen Aderlass way before he had become Queen so I stupidly used informality with him and he understandably got upset with me. I was just so happy to see an acquaintance that I guess I had forgotten my place and he promptly told me I could not come back for three weeks. Now, Father is horrified at me and will not let me come home until I have fixed things with The Queen. You know Father, his reputation is everything to him so it would seem that I have screwed rather seriously.” She took a breathe and looked away from him in shame.

Oh what a riot!
She had personally insulted Queen Aderlass? With as little interest as he honestly held for the Courts outside of his own, Malachior at least made sure to know the titled members in each by name and face if nothing else. Never would he think to insult a Queen, especially The Queen of a suit.
The buck snorted roughly and strolled into the sitting room, motioning to the couch for her to sit while he remained standing before her. "I would like to hear that you have learned from this mistake, yes? Inside the Courts, you are to use formalities. I would have thought you knew as much from your visits with me." The Courts were important to him, his life even. When his wife died, that had only become all the more clear.
Not even his brother could have helped but notice the change that overcame him during that time.
"From now on, whether or not you recognize them, if they are above you then you will greet them with their formal title. Even if you encounter me -- especially if you do -- I would expect to greeted as a King and not your Uncle, understood?"

Dilis knew he would enjoy this... she was just grateful he had not gotten angry like Father had with her.
"Yes, I have learned. I know it was wrong of me to address him like that and I really was not thinking when I did it. I should have listened to yours and Father's words while I was growing and perhaps I would not have made such a mistake. I do remember the days visiting you; I looked up to you being able to command respect and make people do what you wanted..."
She was envious of her Uncle Malachi, he had a power she only hoped she could have one day.
"My plan is to go back in three weeks and try again. Perhaps then Father will forgive me as well. It broke my heart to have him upset with me. You and he are all the family I have left since Mother passed..."
She tried to bite her tongue on the mention of her Mother, she knew Uncle Malachi did not like her particularly much but sometimes she could not help herself.

Malachior sneered heavily as he stared down at her, almost tempted to laugh outright. Respect? "If you ever intend to reach the state of respect that I do, then you have a lot of maturing yet to do, Dilis." Even though she had already taken a seat, he remained standing with the intention of putting some tea on -- not to mention the added benefit of his looming presence above her. "Your personality harbors far too much familiarity with those around you. You will need to learn to separate the two, business and friendship, when you are in Court. There will be those that you can slacken formality with, but I would not suggest that you do so until you're absolutely sure that it will be warmly accepted."
He snorted slightly, his eyes cold. He honestly shouldn't be bothering with giving her advice, especially advice he hoped she already knew, but if she managed to keep from messing up again then he would not have to deal with her father kicking her out again.
"I am well aware that we are all you have left as family, or I would not have let you into my home." He didn't care if the words were cutting or not, he was showing her kindness regardless and she best be grateful. "Your father, the soft fool that he is, will welcome you with open arms once the three weeks have passed."
With that said he turned and moved back toward the kitchen, pausing in the doorway to glance back at the girl. "I am putting some tea on, do you want some?" He had a few Esterberry blends that her father had passed along to him that he assumed she would probably appreciate.

This visit was not going well, but that was alright because she had expected as much.
"I had only meant to say that I do remember seeing your manner in Court. I cannot be outright cold as you have exhibited but I do understand the idea of formality, sir. I believe in even completing the Jack Quest to begin with, that should show that I have the ability to excel without incident. I just simply made a mistake that I intend to correct once the time has arrived. I know how I should have acted and will do so when given the chance. I will make a conscience effort in the future to separate my personal life from business at the Courts."
She was brimming on infuriated. He was just a pompous ass like Father was, though they were brothers so it made sense. At that moment, she wished her Aunt had still been alive... she had at least gotten along with her.
"If Father cannot see that I try my hardest in what I do, then he obviously does not love nor appreciate me and in that case, I do not feel I need him."
"Tea? Yes I would like a cup. Thank you, Uncle." Thank god, she had not had a chance to sit and enjoy a cup of tea for a bit. Father was always Dilis do this, Dilis do that.Sometimes she thought it would never end...
