"Oh, well, yeah, talking." Lani laughed a little and shook her head so that her hair came down over one eye. "That's sort of what I figured would be happening when I heard there was an appointment, but then you threw the food into the mix, and I was a little 'whoa, okay, lunchtime now?' Nice loop to throw out there. Good thing I used to play fetch. I guess you didn't play fetch when you didn't go on picnics?" The canine didn't say it with any sort of maliciousness in her tone, more of a teasing laugh. She was big on the teasing.
The picnic basket drew her attention and she sniffed curiously, the whiff of something beefy reaching her nose. Roast beef? Her eyebrows rose and as soon as she got permission, she gave the equine a 'can do' grin before she reached out a paw. A few things were shifted around until the smell got stronger and she saw the paper, wrapped bundle she was after.
"Please excuse my lack of hands, still working on the biped," she threw out before reaching her head in and carefully grabbing the bundle in her jaws. After that, it was just a matter of putting it down on the blanket and pawing at it carefully until it was unwrapped.

Rai gestured towards the basket with an inviting flick of his fingers. He waited until after both of the girls had chosen something before reaching in for his own sprout sandwich. Occasionally, he had a strange urging for meat, but he refused to give in to it, especially not after finding two of his sons trying to eat some of their siblings. No, he had a very bad feeling he knew exactly where those urges had come form and he absolutely refused to give in to them. Not that it was here nor there in this conversation.
"Well," the stallion said quietly. "I have not yet had a chance to really speak with either of you, but there's a great deal of potential sitting here on this blanket. This seemed as good as a time as any to begin our acquaintance together." Said lightly with little behind it, it was still up to the girls to take from his words wot they would.

Oh really? Is that what he wanted. Xiven's tail swished as she took a small bite of her sandwich in contemplation. Did he want to get to know them because they could be potential rivals or because they could work under him? Or... something else entirely. Politics and words were fun things. Being blunt was so much easier, which is why Xiven always loved her mother's truthfulness.
But that wasn't the issue was it?
"As good as a time as any, though, I can't say I'm as interesting as Lani is. I really just like to keep to myself and study on how to be a proper Court member. Ever since I was little I've always wanted to be a Queen. Besides that goal my hobbies are pretty boring. Though, one day I really want to ice skate." Xiven shrugged, "Since you said this would be a nice time to talk, I figure we can throw anything out there, right?"
She was just waiting for one of Lani's smart ass comments. She always had some smart ass comment.

Far be it from Lani to pass something like that up. The new Queen wanted to become acquainted with her? And Xiven? Awfully good of him to have them out on a picnic to accomplish that. Did he think they were both still 'kids' or did he just do stuff like this often in his spare time? Either way, he hadn't really given much of a hint beyond their 'potential' so she wasn't going to say anything about it yet.
"It's okay, Xiven. I understand. Not everyone can be as interesting as I am." She grinned and held her head high in a pose before snorting and dropping it altogether, opening a wing to lightly whack the back of the other girl's head with her feathers. "No, but seriously, quit that. Your dad's weird enough that he wouldn't like you unless there was something interesting about you, and I've heard that you're pretty much his favorite kid from the gossips, so you're probably selling yourself short. Eh. Then again, you might be the most boring, vanilla little houseplant ever and just fooling us all."
She ate a bit more of the sandwich, feathery tail flicking this way and that, then looked back up in surprise. "Oh. Oh yeah, I didn't actually say anything about myself. Hum." She looked thoughtful for a minute. "I don't really know what I want to be when I grow up." She snorted and shook her head. "Which will be, like, never, I guess. I dunno, I think my uncle wants me to go into the Courts but I haven't really made up my mind on that yet. In the meantime, I go between here and the Capital a lot. So much happening there, it's just nuts."

It was interesting to hear that Pravus was, indeed, taking a serious interest in his children. Rai had been a bit surprised when he first learned of Peaches' pregnancy. He doubted Pravus had the same problems with the Torquehelmian, however, that Rai had with Mnemosyne. Ah, well, that hardly mattered here.
The fact that Xiven wanted to ice skate made the stallion smile lightly. He directed a question at her, though. "Wot do you see a proper Court member being like, Xiven?" With her parents, that might be a -very- interesting answer, indeed.
Lani was.... Rai struggled for a good word to mentally describe her as. Interesting was the easiest word and certainly fitting. There had to be a better way, but he didn't really have anything just yet. So far he was amused by both girls. "Well, Lani, I hope you don't feel pressured to join the Courts officially, even with Bernard's desire for it. The Courts, as I'm sure you know, are difficult enough for those of us who want to be in them." Not that the little Highlander seemed to care about many other people's opinions; she seemed very self-reliant that way.

Lani was just fantastic at this whole embarrassing a person thing. How the heck was he supposed to respond to that? Gossip never really did interest the feline, but apparently she was part of it if she wanted to be or not. "Thanks for that information Lani, I didn't actually know I was his favorite. I guess gossip is good for something after all," She forcefully coughed hoping that subject would drop.
Oh well, that was a good question to ask. Did she really know the answer to it? She knew that her parents weren't the right answer. If she turned out to be anything like her mother... uh no. No that just wasn't going to happen.
"The ideal court member would be responsible and do their work swiftly. That's a really boring answer, I'm aware, but I imagine there's always some interesting quirk that makes the court member a court member. Otherwise I don't think my Mom or Dad would be in courts." Xiven half wanted to give a nervous laugh. Instead she took a bite of her sandwich.

Lani finished her sandwich in a few more bites, watching one of the banders run after a cricket for a minute before her name brought her attention back to the conversation. "Oh, yeah, no problem," she said airily to Xiven, then listened to the other girl's answer to the question.
Wow. That really was boring. She really wanted to mock-snore and if the girl had been her sister, she probably would have. As it was, she rolled her eyes a little bit. "Don't worry, Your Majesty. If I figure out for sure that I don't want to be in the Courts, nobody's going to see me here for that long except to visit, not Uncle or Vio or anybody. I don't stay where I don't want to be. And that whole 'being responsible' and 'doing work swiftly' bit, yeah, that's probably not for me." She snorted and shook her head. "Xiven, you can have that, trust me."

The good thing about human form was that he didn't have to concentrate as hard on controlling his ears; human ears weren't nearly as flexible as equine. So though his ears wanted to flip back in amusement at Xiven's point about her parents, they could not. Instead he smiled slightly, though the emotion never did reach much past his lips.
"Certainly excellent qualities," the man murmured thoughtfully. He paused, trying to pinpoint exactly wot he was trying to ask the girl next. "How do you see yourself as a Court member?" Since she was the interested one, she was the one he would concentrate the Court questions on.
Rai blinked in surprise at Lani's response, quickly answering the part that concerned him the most. "Don't feel you have to avoid the Courts, Lani; that was not my intent." He gave her a brief smile as well. "You are most welcome to stay around the Courts even if you aren't titled. I would not willingly kick someone out of their home."
Because even after all that had occurred, Lani was still a great deal more comfortable in the Palace than he was. It was a wry thought and he pushed it away with his longing to see the Marsh again. Sometimes it was difficult to have one's heart in two places.

Lani always said what she was thinking out loud, or at least, it seemed that way. Xiven's ears twitched as she listened to her response. She was somewhat jealous of her active social life but Xiven did have the horrible habit of attracting weirdos. Funny how that worked.
She blinked at the question. "I'm not entirely sure what you mean, Your Majesty. I can see myself as a Court member because of my determination, my responsibility and my drive to make things better--even if they're "fine" they can always be better. If you accept me into court then the "How" would be answered. Though I can see myself as a possibly diplomat, if that's what you mean, sir."
She shrugged. Xiven had no idea if that was an acceptable response. It was just the only thing she could think of saying. She looked down at her half eaten sandwich. Well, she wasn't going to stop now. She took a few more bites as she watched for Shinrai's response.
