"Well, we don't fish here at the village like many of the commercial fishers do; we catch all of our food with spear, a single small net or a single hook and fishing pole. I became rather good at deep diving to find octopus and the like." As if to show him her prowess, she made a motion as if to throw an invisible spear, grinning goofily.
Then she saw how self conscious he looked, and she immediately fumbled to cover her own mistake. "Oh! I didn't mean to imply you weren't tidy! I was just curious..." Absently, she lifted her tail out of them water. It was a most pathetic and ratty looking thing when wet, and she grinned broadly and waggled it, trying to make him laugh. "well, don't worry about looking unkempt; the fluffier you are, the worse you look when you get out of the water. I probably have it worse off than you."

Ah ... I know nothing of hunting or fishing ... but that's ... kind of obvious isn't it?
He grinned shyly, his ears pulling themselves into a rather awkward angle as he did. He kept himself from adding in a little comment like ' but at trash digging, I'm the best' or well .. .something along those lines. He didn't exactly go around spreading the word that he'd been a street rat to everyone, only his adopted family knew that for sure.
Oh! I didn't think that ... I just ... well ... I was thinking out loud is all.
He chuckled nervously at first, but the sight of her tail turned it into a more genuine one. Well, she was right .... her tail certainly did look rather funny. He brought is own out of the water and wiggled it about as well, the tip, where the feathers had been, looked more like a small tuft of slick fur then feathers when wet.
Well ... at least they haven't coined a phrase about wet squirrels. The whole .... looking like a drown rat thing ... we don't look that bad soaking wet ...

Zuberi nodded her head quite emphatically, throwing her arms up in a helpless gesture. "I -know-! I'll tell you that the Midori rats around here are probably some of the most graceful in the water. The little animal ones are quite innovative as well. I've heard of them able to navigate the plumbing from one side to the other and that's quite... disturbing admittedly, but also quite a feat."
She giggled a bit at the sight of his own tail, but she felt like his issues with getting wet were certainly blown out of proportion. Even with soaked wings he'd probably be able to swim... but his odd fear about the water... that would take a while. Hesitantly, she decided to ask a question that was on her mind. "Why are you so frightened of the water, Tavor?" She asked softly, as if knowing if it was enough to get him this frightened, it might be a painful memory.

Yes, rats can fit themselves into any space we can fit out heads through and scent things as well as almost any dog.
His tone was rather ... matter of fact really, as if he were repeating something straight from a text book or some such. He paused, blinking a few times in quick succession before he turned to her, smiling softly.
Sorry .... Miss Ophelia is a scientist and I guess some thing rub off on you after awhile.
Now, he expected her next question to crop up at some time or another so it didn't throw him off at all, he merely wiggled his tail a bit more before dropping it back down into the water.
When I was little I was playing in a lake with Xylia and I slipped on some rocks and my wings got wet and pulled me under, I almost drown.
His wings were a lot larger in comparison to his body size back then, and he'd only had his animal form with those short little rodent limbs as well but the fear had stuck and it wasn't one so easily dismissed. He had worse fears ... but those were the type that no one would be able to fix ...

"Oh... well I guess that's an understandable reason to be afraid of the water." Zuberi admitted.
"A scientist? Corvistownian I'd assume... but then again who is Ophelia?" Zuberi gave a small laugh. "I don't think you've told me anything about your friends and family yet."
Then again, should she be prying? Tavor was such a.. sensitive and private creature. Sometimes she felt awkward asking questions if only because the answers often were dark and odd. Then again, her past was turning bizarrely dark and odd as she went through the path her life was taking so she couldn't really talk. She watched the rat carefully, trying to gauge his reaction. When he talked about things, sometimes he became so distant. It was bothersome to see the soft spoken rat do such a thing. What sort of pain had he been through?

I haven't?
He blinked a few times and tapped his chin with a purple claw. Wow, he really hadn't mentioned them, that was so very ... odd. His family was terribly important to him, then again ... it hadn't really come up until now.
Well, yes, she is .... she's gotten fairly well known in the capitol. She and Maxwell, a cheerful Torquehelm, raised me alongside their own children. They're rather nice people.
Instead of going distant and dark he flashed a rather genuine smile, he loved talking and thinking about his large, but pleasant adoptive family.
They're more like .... family and friends all in one. Outside of that I met a Morganberry Canine in the Capitol with such a cheerful nature it's infectious.
He chuckled a bit at that and managed to resist the urge to turn a bit red in the cheeks at the mention of the canine or, rather, more what the canine had been able to get him to do.

[b"]A cheerful Torquelhelm?"[/b][/color] Zuberi was a touch surprised. "I admit that I find that a bit surprising..." Tavor had more to say, and she listened.. but she didn't miss the touch of color to the insides of his ears at the mention of this.. Morganberry sort. Immediately Zuberi was suspicious; Tavor seemed like such an impressionable sort she could only imagine other people taking advantage of the rodent.
"Well, I'll trust your good judgement of this Morganberry. Whenever they come into Midori it seems they are trying to buy up the place." It seemed she had a slight stigma against the Morganberry sorts. Then again if she dug deep enough she could find some bias against almost every region.. even her own. "Well, it's lovely to hear that you had such a delightful family... quite refreshing because well..." She nearly put her foot in her mouth... but now she was stuck in a situation where she felt like she had to finish her thought. "Well.. there are other sorts, especially Lowlanders that have a history that's filled with a generous amount of woe... Not to insinuate you haven't went through strife but many of them grew up with very little love in their life. You should count yourself lucky."

Feeling a bit better about being in the water at all, he reached out a hand and ran a single, purple claw over it's surface carefully, testing it. Not along after her was toying with the water idly with his fingers, that distant look returning to his eyes as he did.
They're not my real family though ... but I wish they were.
It would certainly take the edge off of just .... not knowing a thing about where you came from. Sure he knew his regions, but that didn't really mean a thing in the long run, did it? Not really, but neither did thinking bad thoughts, so he turned his head and flashed her a smile.
The bad sort of people don't really seem to pay me much mind, so no worries.
They did, just not the lasting kind he was referring to. Then again he was the sort that got rather attached to anyone who was nice to him, but he didn't think that little trait would lead him to bad people ... it hadn't so far after all ..... and then he paused, expression growing a bit more serious.
There is something I wanted to ask you.

Zuberi's ears gave the slightest of twitches, not giving away one way or another how she thought about his words. Inside though, she was worried. He'd said they weren't his real family. Of course she had comments to that, but she kept it to herself. It was probably hard being adopted. She wouldn't know, personally. She had both a mother and a father that were her own, along with countless aunts, uncles and cousins. She couldn't imagine what it would be like to grow up without them.
The change in the rat hybrid's mood caught her attention quickly, and she looked in his direction with an attentive expression. It was bizarre seeing Tavor serious, she thought to herself, but kept quiet about that little tidbit of thought. Still, what would he have to ask that would need him to be so serious?
"Sure thing. Ask anything you'd like."
