The little sparrow was considerably out of it by the time she had asked her question, but she was still coherent enough to notice his sudden change in demeanor. Her eyes clung to him for a moment, a small tremble of fear moving through her as his ears panned backwards, then turned away with a feeble cough. She felt as if she had completely smashed the somewhat pleasant mood that had settled between them, and she stared somewhat dejectedly into her soup. "Mmmnn.. Thank you." she murmured, taking a sip and letting the warmpth fill her body. "You're a good man, Mr. Rai."
The soup was delicious, and she couldn't help but nearly forget all her manners, sipping deeply at it and occasionally taking a large bite of the bread before returning to the delightful heat of the soup. Well, at least he could be assured that she had her appetite...
Eventually, she finished eating and moved back to the seat, her eyelids fluttering as she began to drift off to sleep. It didn't take long for sleep to take her fully, and she was soon a softly moving pile of feathers beneath Rai's thick cloak, completely oblivious to the world around her.

Shinrai’s eyes widened slightly in surprise and his ears slipped sideways in a subconscious softening for the little girl, though he would never purposefully let anyone know about this side of himself. ”Just eat up,” he said in reply, surreptitiously watching to be certain she ate every bite. He was pleased when she did and, evidently, with relish. This was a pleasant surprise; he’d never really thought much of his cooking one way or the other but she made it seem as though it was actually really good.
He didn’t say anything as she began to doze off, he simply watched as she slowly fell into a deeper and deeper sleep. He wasn’t certain if he should move her or just let her sleep for now. He decided to leave her for now, quietly setting his empty cup on the tray and then took it to the kitchen. It took a few quiet minutes of cleaning and then he returned to the living room to stare at the small ball of fluff yet again.
He was leery of leaving her out here; it was certainly warmer than outside, but it could get a bit chilly if you weren’t moving around. After another moment of hesitation, Rai carefully gathered the cloak around her as a sling and picked her up with the cloth to carry her back into his bedroom. He arranged her carefully on the large bed and soon carefully arranged himself to the side to fall asleep. He didn’t feel alright leaving her alone, but it was very strange to have another warm body in his bed. Well, another warm body that wasn’t passed out from alcohol followed swiftly by his own fall into unconsciousness. With that strange feeling, Rai fell asleep himself.

Mori's small frame barely even twitched as Rai moved her sleeping body. If he moved closer to listen to her breath, he might notice a troubling wheeze, but it would take a careful ear to hear it if he wasn't specifically listening. She was a child, a sick child who had been through a long night and had a belly full of food, so her deep sleep was hardly unexpected. As Rai climbed into bed, the little bird curled closer to him in a subconscious sign of her desire to be comforted, though she wasn't even awake.
Silence fell for most of the night, as the hours melded into one another seamlessly.
Then, as suddenly as it had fallen, the silence was broken. Mori was coughing violently, her body shaking with the effort of breathing between the spasms. Her wings folded around herself, her breathing completely ragged and desperate. Her eyes closed tightly as the coughing fit seemed to subside for the moment, but her trembling continued as bad as ever. She was terrified that she had woken the sleeping horse, her savior. Why was this happening? She never wanted to be a burden to him, and now she had almost certainly woken him.

Fond of children or not, Rai was not well-versed in their care; he hadn’t had his twin long enough to make a real difference in his life and he’d become solitary after Shin’s death. There was no reason for him to really know children anymore. Terrible coughing fits, however, he –knew- were not normal and also a very bad sign. He froze next to her, uncertain of exactly wot to do at first; should he hold her, let her cough it out, get water, wot? He was very unsure and he didn’t like the feeling. When she finally stopped her terrible, wracking cough, the stallion curled his tail up and around, almost hugging her small body.
”Are you all right?” His voice was low and soft, almost intimate in the comforting darkness of the room. ”Should I go find a doctor?” he asked quietly and gently, wondering if the little bird would even tell him the truth. He just wasn’t certain in the least about wot to do.

She clung to his thick tail as if it were a liferaft keeping her head above the waves of her illness, eyes closed tightly as she coughed again, this time to attempt to clear her throat to the point of speaking. Her lungs were thick and seemed to feel as though they were filled with a horribly viscous liquid. She was drowning on dry land, she couldn't get any air in-Her horribly racing thoughts were stilled by a single word that worked through her mind: Calm. If she didn't gain her composure, she wouldn't breath. As she slowed her body but continued to cling, her eyes closed. She shuddered with the effort of drawing a single deep breath, and that one gasp seemed to clear her lungs.
At least, for the time being.
Mr. Rai had spoken, hadn't he? She was gasping like a fish, her body absolutely sucking in the sweet air that surrounded her. Each breath was more welcome than the next, and it almost enabled her to ignore the way her lungs were rattling. At Rai's comment, she shook her head almost desperately. "No, no, please Mr. Rai. I don't need a doctor. I'll be okay. I've had colds before." slowly, almost sadly, she detatched from his tail, offering him a small smile that she hoped would help to soothe his nerves.
Drat. He had woken up. She guessed it only made sense, but if he was awake and willing to help... "W-water might help, though." she was so embarassed.

It wasn’t that Rai though the little bird was a liar, but he really didn’t think she was being entirely honest with him. It didn’t seem like just a cold, but he was really rarely ill and he couldn’t remember wot the right answer was in regards to treatments. Most of the time he was sick he just took it easy for a few days and made sure to get lots of fluids; this didn’t seem like the right answer for how terribly the coughs racked the small form. ”Just lie still,” he finally counseled quietly.
He got up carefully, trying to avoid jostling her too badly and moved quietly into his kitchen. Rai put the teapot back on the stove and filled a glass of water. He remembered something about broths helping; wasn’t there something about sodium that helped? He carried the glass back into the bedroom and passed it on to the little bird without a word so he could return back to the kitchen and find a way to make some broth. Fortunately, it looked as though El had hidden some packets of the stuff in his pantry last time the canine had come to visit. Following the directions on the back, he soon had a nice warm broth. Placing it carefully on the tray from earlier, the stallion brought that back to the room as well. ”This should help,” he said quietly, placing it down beside the bird.

Mori could smell the soup, and the heated air felt soft on her aching lungs. She hunched over, listening to the dull pounding of her heart and her head, the rattling notes of her ragged breaths rising above even those noises. She was going to be okay. If it got any worse, Mr. Rai would almost certainly whisk her to a doctor. He knew her father, and she could tell almost instinctively that he was a good man. She pulled herself into a seated position, and offered the stallion a slightly crooked smile as he entered the room with the broth. "I don't know how to thank you enough, Mr. Rai. I'm so sorry I'm such a burden to you."
She was secretly glad that he had just brought the broth and no bread - she honestly wasn't sure if her throat could take anything solid. She brought the warm liquid to her beak and swallowed it slowly, closing her eyes as the heat filled her once more. It was delicious, yet she still winced slightly as she swallowed it. She really had been coughing hard, hadn't she? She was sure the soup would get her back on her feet soon enough, though, and she quickly took another long drink of it. "Thank you.."

Mori wasn’t a real burden to the man, but she was definitely a mass of excitement. He didn’t really care for either of those, though. Ah, well. She was here now and all he could do was take care of her to the best of his abilities. He couldn’t –not- take care of a child, and he owed more than this to her father. He just wished he knew better whether or not he needed to find a doctor…
”Do not trouble yourself,” he said, though whether it was against her apology or her thanks was unclear. ”Simply save your strength and get better.” He waited for her to finish the soup before setting the tray aside on one of the dressers and turning to look at her with grey-green eyes. He was still worried and didn’t know how to relay that. ”Are you warm enough?” He had other blankets in the closet that he could get out if she needed them.

The tiny sparrow nodded at his words, continuing to sip at the soup that had been placed in front of her. As the warm broth hit her belly she felt her trembling begin to subside until it was almost completely gone, just the occasional shiver that passed through her slender frame. Her head leaned forward slightly, eyelids fluttering and her body jolting as she caught herself, turning to look up at Rai again with wide blue eyes. "I-I'll do my best, Mr. Rai," she finally said, voice strained from the coughing. "With all the help you've given me, I know I'll be fine soon."
Within another minute, the rest of the broth had been finished, and Mori could feel her exhaustion getting the better of her. She coughed feebly several times, and snuggled closer into the blankets.
When the horse spoke to her again, she was completely silent and still, her only movements the steady rise and fall of her breathing and the occasional twitch of dreams.
