The immediate damage was done, however, and Kelasia's head hung just a bit lower when he laughed at her. Even when he said he wasn't, she couldn't quite make herself believe though, she certainly tried, giving him a nod that would hopefully convey that she hadn't taken it the way she had. Blue eyes skimmed the forum with passive interest; normally she would have enjoyed the area; any place that didn't have too many beings and allowed her to stay out of the way were places she would seek out.
Something she was fantastic at? Not hardly. She really wasn't that good at anything. "Are your parents both Nines?" she asked for a multitude of reasons. First of all, she didn't want to have to answer any questions regarding wot she may or may not be good at. Secondly, if his parents didn't share his 'high' status, then, and no offense to them, it didn't really matter wot they thought; she needed to know wot other Nines, preferably Diamonds, thought.

He raised an eyebrow. Kelasia seemed a little more dejected than he would have hoped. Damn, he had once again screwed up in the long run of things. His mother, he was sure, would have blamed it on him being a man and an insensitive moron.
"My mother is also a nine of diamonds and my father is a seven of diamonds," he sighed. "My mother has been a secretary her entire life, while my father ran an antique shop most of his life. The only reason I decided to become something better was because I was bored."
He hated to admit it, but it was the truth. His parents, as nice as they were, were an amazing shade of boring. Kelasia was far from that, at least she had a personality. "I didn't mean to make you depressed, sorry about that. I'm insensitive sometimes."
He fluffed his feathers. He couldn't think of much else to say, so he just let the awkward silence wash over him. It was eerie that no one was around, even in the shops. It was probably nothing special, there was probably some grand event that everyone was going to. It's not like any of it was that important.

Theofilus could hardly have known that she would have reacted so poorly anymore than she could have guessed that his parents were both high mid-ranked. It was, however, a nice surprise that his mother was also a Nine and his father a Seven. Kelasia tilted her head to one side thoughtfully, one ear twitching against her silver forelock. If his mother, as a Nine of Diamonds, could successfully work as a secretary then it couldn't be a step downwards if she tried for such employment as well.
The long silence didn't bother her; the skunk simply used the time to assimilate this new information and think through her feelings on the matter. So, it was after a long pause that she finally spoke. "Wot job do you hold?" she asked softly, hesitantly. He said he'd made something more of himself, so wot would he deem as a non-boring occupation? Perhaps she should aspire to be more like this Nine of Diamonds rather than his parents. Wouldn't her mother be much more pleased by that?

"I'm a clerk," he smiled, "and partner of my own shipping firm. I'm going to own it once my partner gets married." He would have rolled his eyes but he did care for his boss, and hoped for his happiness.
It had been a while since Theofilus had met someone like Kelasia. She often avoided half of his statements and questions. If she did this on purpose or not he couldn't tell. It was probably because she was so blunt, and yet so soft spoken. His feathers had been ruffled unconsciously, and he smoothed them out.
He coughed, "I pretty much do all the work at our firm. And we're short handed here at the Capital. I had to come and arrange things for one of our clients, I even have to collect payment. We're getting bigger, but we're still tiny. Ah, it's insane."
His job did give him benefits, despite all the hard work. He enjoyed what he did, he just needed help. It wasn't the end of the world to admit that, was it?

Shipping firm? That was different. Wot did he send, she wondered. And how would you go about setting up something like that anyway? As was often the case, Kelasia's curiousity kicked in and she just knew she was going to have to look up shipping firms as soon as she found a library. She didn't notice the sign of his agitation so caught up in her wonderings that silence fell long between them before she thought to say something again.
Perhaps unsurprising even now to Theo, the skunk had yet another question, or, actually, a series of questions. "You don't work here? Where do you work from? Wot do you ship?" She asked and seemed on the verge of further questioning before she stave them swiftly off. Actually, she had a great many -more- questions than that, but her mother always grew angry if she asked too many questions at once, so she purposefully limited herself to no more than three at a time. If she remembered to.

"My goodness you ask quite a few questions. I'll never get bored at this rate," he winked at her. Theofilus took a deep breath so he could explain the various questions. "Firstly, no I don't work here. I work in the Selkie Lakes, my home. We have a small branch here where we can take and deliver some orders."
He paused to breath. What was the next question? What do they ship? That was a nice and complicated one. "We ship water, building material, anything that people are willing to ship with us. You see, people already have what they want to ship and then they use us to ship it. I take care of the logs, the materials and such. We do ship our own firms water, since my partner owns a good quantity of pure water."
That... wasn't all that clear. He thought harder, "Well, for example. We shipped river stones to Capital City. We didn't own the river stones, we were told to pick them up at a given place and to ship them to Capital City. It's really that simple. But we have to keep track of numbers of things tracked and such so we aren't blamed for cheating someone out of their good earned money."
Theo wasn't sure if this made any sense. He looked at her expression to check to see if she understood what he was trying to explain to her.

Being from Sorgaire Range, it was a little strange to think about all the things that needed to be shipped to other places; most of their supplies simply came from the nearby Marsh. "So, you run a general shipping firm," she clarified softly. Again, interesting. Very interesting. "How does one ship water?" It was almost a rhetorical question, though not entirely.
However, despite the question coming out, she had several more forthcoming almost immediately. "Is your business profitable? Do you have a lot of competition? Wot do you need help with? Why can't your partner continue to assist after his marriage? Is he from Selkie Lakes as well?" Oops, that was more than three. Kelasia awkwardly flushed again and her gaze went back to the ground. Any second now Theofilus was going to get mad at her and there would go this attempt at interaction with others.
People notoriously got frustrated with her: for her shyness, her questions, her subservient demeanour. She gave an inward sigh; and Theofilus seemed so nice. He'd been so understanding thus far and she was just going to blow it by... well, by being herself.

Theo found himself wondering if she was asking these questions out of sheer curiosity or because she knew nothing about how the world worked. He felt like a teacher who was explaining the rules and regulations of the school's policy to a child who spoke a different language. "We ship water in bottles or barrels, it depends on the customer," He shrugged. That was a simple question, the others could pose an interesting problem. That wasn't true, Theo just couldn't understand why she was interested in such boring work. "Yes we have a profitable business with a plenty of competition. We're tiny in comparison to all of our competitors. The only reason we haven't expanded is because well... we like it small. It's nice when you can talk to the customers about the weather." he explained. He rolled his eyes, "My partner is a family friend also from the lakes. He actually owns another business, this shipping firm has always been a "side project" since he won't have time for it when he gets married he's giving it to me. Don't ask me why he doesn't have time, I don't really know the details of that myself, but he's always been... the slower and lazier between the two of us."
All right, maybe he could slip some questions of his own in the mix. This was the perfect opportunity since she now knew so much about him, and anyway, it was wonderful to talk to someone as an equal. Hopefully he wouldn't frighten her away, he never was too sure where his boundary lines were when it came to women. "So, how about you? Are your parents of a high rank? Is there any particular reason why you've traveled all this way?" he asked with a tilt of his head. ( OOC: okay, sorry if this sucks. I've only had four hours of sleep, my roommate won't leave the room so I can nap, and you know I feel like a horrible person for invading someone else's room because I can't stand the mess in mine. -_-; )

(( Aww, poor Kari! :/ i think it's a very good post. <3 And i keep kidnapping a friend to help me clean and organize my whole, freakin' house.. xD;;; ))
"Oh, I didn't even think of barrels," she murmured nearly under her breath. Though, of course, that made perfect sense. Where did he get the barrels from? But that was merely a tangent question and she was able to keep from simply blurting it out, especially as he was being kind enough to make an effort to answer all of her questions. It touched her that he was trying so hard and, subconsciously, her carriage became a little less down-trodden.
As one who generally sought only the company of books, Kelasia was likely a it naive about the world, but she really was curious. She wasn't looking to become an expert in shipping, nor did she really have more than a passing interest in the business, as of now; really she was simply -curious-, another trait her mother criticised. She always wanted to know more about everything, just so should could know it.
"Oh, ah..." she stumbled through her answer to his questions. "My parents aren't... all that high...." Something her mother absolutely abhorred, despite her attempts at raising her own rank. And her mother would kill her for talking about it too much, so she pushed quickly on to answer his next question, even if it was something that was a bit embarrassing to her. "I've come to the Capital looking for ambition." She flushed slightly, knowing that had to sound strange.
