Mommy had set a quest for her and she was determined to succeed. It had taken a while but she had finally been able to sneak away from the ‘family’ she had been sold to. After the chicken had taken her in, he had then told her she was to go with another young man. She had scuffed at that and after trying to kick his precious jewels and bite his fingers she had been locked into a room. The room of course was supposed to let her ‘think about what she had done’. Of course it had not worked but only had caused her to plot about how to get away. It had taken a few more hours . . . okay hours . . . the she had wanted. But she was free now so everything was okay. Wondering down the street her hoofs clicking on the paved stones, it was probably close to midnight she figured from the abandonment of people and the height of the moon. When a policeman – well a policebird – walked by she quickly hid in an alleyway. When he had passed up her hiding spot, swinging his baton and whistling softly to himself, she made her way hesitantly out from her hiding spot. It would not due to get caught after she had taken such lengths to get away. When he did not notice her she continued on her way.

Roxanne had given him the night off, all but tossing him out the door at his continued rebuttal. He was almost grateful. The entirety of the last week he'd been distracted and edgy, and it showed in his work. He was getting sloppy. It was worse, though, without something to keep his mind off all his past troubles. Work kept him busy and gave him something to fight off the pain with. It was the anniversary of Aurélie's death. He'd taken to the air shortly after leaving the town house they all lived in, letting the cool night air clear his head. He was flying over on of the more rattier sections of town, when he saw a bright blur of color sneaking through the shadows. A small something. He glided down to take a closer look. It was a little equine, from the looks of it--and far from home. After a moment's hesitation, he touched down and tried to decide what to say, if anything.

She was getting hungry and was probably more tired then she would ever admit to herself. They had only been feeding her enough bread and water to keep her alive as an extra incentive for her to ‘behave’ and ‘accept her new father’s attention’. She had used few choice words her mother preferred in response and had been slapped for it. Well that was okay; she knew where they were going to end up.
Hearing the small swish of something that sounded like wings, she looked over her shoulder.
She took in the newcomer with wide eyes. Though it was hard to make things out in the dark, she was able to get the impression that he was a bat, mostly of a white color with blue stripes. Eyes narrowing, she looked him up and down, taking in his four of Hearts rank that rested on his left chest, measuring him up for a threat.
She was more then willing to fight if she needed to.

He didn't know how to react around children, not anymore. Aurélie hadn't physically been a child when she died, but she'd always maintained that child-like innocence, even at the very end.
This little equine was nothing like Aurélie, though. Aurélie had never been so feisty. He managed a small chuckle, watching as the mare bristled in self-defense. She certainly had a lot of spirit, though it shouldn't be unexpected from a Yarrow Gardens chit.
"No need to get defensive, little one. I mean you no harm. Just curious why you've decided to slither through such seedy alleys. One such as yourself certainly belongs in a better place. Are you lost?"
He highly doubted, if she had any bit of self-preservation or common sense, that she'd trust him so easily, but that wasn't really his problem. He could point her in the right direction; whether she would take his advice or not was up to her.

She continued to look him over; though from his tone and posture she was pretty sure he meant his words of not posing a threat.
“I am not ‘slithering’. I am on a quest.” She replied, her voice did not contain sarcasm, she was just pointing out the truth to him . . . with a hint of sarcasm. “And I am not lost, thanks though. I just do not really know where I am at the moment.”
If this bat decided he was going to offer her help then she was probably going to take it, though she still remained a little leery of him. She had just escaped one man she did not need to be ending up with another. Thanks but no thanks. Men had their uses but she was too young to even want their attention.
“I suppose you know where this is?” She asked him, trying to sound polite. She was not meaning to be rude in anyway, she was just used to commanding her brother and sister around.

Rin's eyebrow lifted of its own accord, slightly taken back by the child's behavior, though he should have expected it from a Yarrow Garden resident. He was certain the filly thought she was being perfectly civil, though, and shrugged it off. He dealt with much worse people on a daily basis--his job pretty much entailed it--and he'd grown a thick hide.
"By air, you're about a hop away from the red light district, and I highly suggest you turn your little hoofs around--" he pointed behind him, down the long line of warehouses, "--and keep walking that way until you hit the street lamps. The sooner you leave this place, the better."
He considered the young mare, years of ingrained chivalry suggesting he offer to take her himself. But he'd left that life behind a long time ago.
Turning, he brushed past the girl, and started walking. He had mourning to do, and possibly a bar fight to start.

She looked towards where he had pointed behind him with a toss of his chin. Eyeing the dark street she took it in. It was true that the road did split to the left, a route she had not taken to get here. Pondering over the chances that that would lead to her home, she was pushed to the side some, caught off guard as he continued on his own route.
Looking after him, she titled her head. She had no clue what this ‘red light’ districts, or why anyone would want to put up red lights. She was hungry and more tired then she would care to admit. She pondered both of the routes, the one behind her and the one before her. Weighing her options she started to follow the bat.
Maybe if she bugged him enough he would either give her food or get annoyed enough to show her back to where her house was. Or, if she was lucky enough she could get both. Liking the sound of that she started to follow him.

Not having felt quite like flying at that particular moment, Rin had continued on foot, which seemed not to have been a particularly smart choice as in turned out. His ears swiveled, picking up the click-clack of tiny hooves on flagstone. Obviously, the girl had decided to not follow his advice.
He really couldn't discern why someone would willingly wander into the red light district if they weren't selling or buying. The little equine was pretty enough, for a child, to garner a certain kind of attention that Rin was fairly certain she would rather not being attracting. And while she would have it coming, not having listened to him, he wasn't some sort of heartless bastard.
He turned around and fixed her with his best indifferent frown, "And where do you think you're going?"
What he was going to do once he "caught" her, he wasn't sure.

The canine-equine cocked her head to the side at his comment. “I am following you of course.” She had thought it was pretty obvious even if she had not meant it to be. Maybe should could not pity a meal out of him, like her original plan, but there was always plan B and C. She was resourceful enough.
“Why are you heading into this ‘red light district’ if you said that it is somewhere I should stay away from? Should not the same apply to you?” She had heard mommy mention the place once or twice, always to meet up with a male. Maybe he would be going to meet Mommy?
Well, screw this, she thought to herself as her stomach growled again. She was going straight to plan E. Pretending to faint, she fell against the wall. She continued on their conversation this time with her voice more soft. “I am sorry . . . It seems that . . . I am feeling a little . . . faint.”

The kid's logic was just a bit skewed, and she seemed to possess an amazing ability to state the obvious. He was a grown man capable of defending himself, and he knew all the dirty tricks to get himself out of a tight pinch; she was just a scrawny little chit with barely an ounce of muscle on her, who had no idea what she was walking into.
Ignorance was bliss until it got you killed.
He felt a pang that he quickly pushed away. Dwelling on the past was pointless.
His eyebrows raised in disbelief as the child pretended to swoon, falling against the wall in feigned weakness.
"You're a horrible actor. Don't quite your day job."
With a sigh, he walked towards her--the problem needed to be dealt with, before the little chit got herself into trouble, and he didn't feel particularly like dealing with any further dramatics.
He snagged her under the arms, and heaved, tossing her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. He turned and headed towards more hospitable part of town.
