Varuna was skittering around vigorously, scrounging up bits and pieces of this and that left on the well-traveled roads leading up to the city from the Golfram Marsh. The brilliant emerald green of her coat blended in well with the tall grasses surrounding her to either side, caught in the first strong glimpse of sunlight one would see when leaving the marsh. Most people didn't enjoy the dark and damp, but she sure did. Even more than that, she loved making things. Random things, she found everything to be useful at some point. "Rah!" She pounced eagerly on a sturdy looking sheet of metal, glaring at the spot of rust on the corner before shifting to a look of consideration. Eventually she decided to leave it alone. Two lengths of rope and one of clear string lay behind her, abandoned for the time being, but soon to have a new companion in the form of this sheet metal. She discovered a glimmering band of silver just a little ways away from that, and furiously picked the jewels out of the center. No use for those silly things. Bits of discarded clothing, more metal, a long necklace, and strange little glass balls were all added to the pile, which was now being inspected by a large rat. "HEY! Piss off! Get away from there 'less you want to get shanked!" She waved a rather sharp looking piece of jagged metal around as she yelled, running forward towards the rat who began to back off with a sneer. Normally, she would not have been so crass and loud, but she'd had a bit to drink before going exploring, as she often did. It made her think better. She began to wrap the length of clear string around a tree trunk, the other half fastened and re-fastened about five times around a large metal box. It looked like this contraption would be purely for mischeif and her own personal amusement. She found comedy in frightening others away from her home and belongings, and while a solid block of metal to the abdomen might not fall under frightening others away, well, it would have a similar effect she imagined.

Grumbling under his breath words of resentment, the mouse made his way down the roads that led to Golfram Marsh , his bright red fur showing in contrast to that of the tall grasses. Mnem had sent him on an expedition to gather some much needed materials for her newest project. “Do not worry yourself over who you need to meet. You will know them when you see them. Now let me be, I have . . . matters to attend to.” had been her absentmindedly muttered words to him as she had worked on combining various items of hers together. So here he was, wondering around looking for someone he was not aware existed. He hated Mnem sometimes. Something glinting by a tree caught his attention. Making his way over he saw an opossum from the area of Golfam Marsh. She had a long brown mane pulled back into a ponytail, her colors of green and yellow blending into the surrounding area. As he got closer he saw that she was fiddling with something attached to the tree, he scuttled closer in interest.

The string was pulled taut in her teeth, and she very carefully began to pull, not wanting to shred the clear plastic string in her sharp jaws. This was fairly easily accomplished, she had years of practice with this sort of thing, and the box was just about up to the same height as the swinging disks she'd just set in place when she heard a noise. Pausing for a moment, the noise stopped with her, so she decided to pretend she hadn't heard anything.
Then it scuttled closer. Blast it, it was probably that damn rat. "I told you to SCAT, thief!" She yelled, the string coming free from her mouth just as she began to speak, the large metal box coming to the ground and creating a loud bang as the metal was severely bent out of shape in the corner of impact. "GRAGH!" She cried out in frustration, tiny clawed hands pulling at the mass of brown mane before she stormed over to... another rat, but of a different variety. One of her kind, though apparently his intellect wasn't much higher than her earlier guest.
"You'd best have a good reason for sneaking up on me like that. Those were good materials right there! Not that I have trouble finding such quality items, but that's time out of my day and I'm now in a piss poor mood. So whadda ya want?" One thing could be said for Varuna, she did Not like being interrupted in the middle of her tinkerings. She had a violent temper that was easy to rouse, but also easy to cool. You just had to know how to handle her... which... very few did. She was a sucker for blunt honestly, she found it an admirable trait, and a strangely rare one...
She could tell this male was here on a mission of some sort, she didn't get many customers these days, not since shiny shops had opened just giving up the morcels she could find on her own. She didn't charge for delivery though, because she didn't deliver. It was none of her concern if they could manage their goods or not, she was just a... borrowed metal detector in a way. It didn't bother her any, most times when she was out hunting on commission, she found dumping grounds she could return to later for herself.
Like this one. Where did that shiny bauble go? She forgot that the prissy ones found them desirable... strange girls they were. At least they would pay for her junk, and that was all too satisfying in itself... especially with the added fact that she made money off it. And one thing could be said about Varuna- she had one predominantly stereotypical feminine trait... she loved money.

He was offended by the opossum’s snappish attitude towards him. He was not some common low land animal and he took offense to being treated as one. Narrowing his eyes towards her and then the ‘good materials’, he took in the ‘destruction’ that he had caused them. It only appeared that one of the corners of the large metal box that she had been playing with was now dented. It was a simple problem that he could fix easily, though he debated about if he really wanted to do it or not.
Shifting to sit on his hind legs, making himself taller, he stated simply, in way of an apology, though his tone might be taken for not being sincere. “I did not sneak up on you, for your information and it is not my fault wot mood you are in. As for wot I am doing, since it is none of your business, all you need to know is that I am looking for someone. I was simply distracted from my task because of something you happened to be doing.”

She considered the male a moment before busting out into a grin, not being able to hide a rolling chain of laughter which merrily flew from her mouth. She managed to calm herself in just a few moments however, grin still firmly in place. "Fiesty one, aren't you? I like you. I was just yanking your chain, this wasn't my real project, this was just to help ease the daily boredom, yanno? If you'd have distracted me in the middle of a true project, hooboy, you'd know it." She paused and considered the materials she had left... some could be salvaged, used, or sold, but most of them would only be useful for her little pet joke and so she'd have to stash them nearby.
"Looking for someone eh? Well it just so happens I live in that marsh you're heading towards so perhaps I could give you a tip on where to find this person." She peered around in the grass, frustrated with where that little gem went. "You didn't happen to see me toss a shiny bauble- ah... gem? jewel? Oh hell, I don't know what they're called, ladies like to wear 'em. I tossed it, because I don't tend to need those things for my customers or my own projects, but I forget they tend to sell for a pretty penny on the market..." She mused, scratching at her mane and furrowing her brow.
"So, ah yes, what brings you here?" She had gotten distracted again, which she tended to do. She could be very... all over the place sometimes.

The change in attitude was a nice surprise. His face softened some and he went to a less defensive stance, though he was not sure if an onlooker would notice the difference.
“A jewel do you say?” he asked, his attention perking up at the words. He had found a jewel when he was on his way towards the opossum, he wondered if it belonged to the creature. However, if she had thrown it away then it was her lost and his to keep.
He quickly changed to topic so that the jewel in question would not be bothered with. “Do you need that box repaired?” He pointed towards the large, now dented, box. As for wot brings me here: I was not informed of whom I needed to meet, thus it makes it a little difficult for me to tell you. All Mnemosyne said was that I would recognize the person.” he said the last part as if something sour was in his mouth and he was spitting it out. He hated being sent on what felt like wild goose chases.

She peered thoughtfully around before noting the voice of the stranger's words, and the thoughtful expression on his face. She could tell from the quick shift that he intended to keep whatever information he had to himself, and so she sighed to herself in irritation. Little packrat, oh well, it wasn't like she was dirt poor, but business was bad lately and her project funds were sinking. Hopefully it was just an offseason and she wouldn't need to hunt after those stupid little money gems.
"The box? Nah, if I did, I could do it myself, anyway. I'll probably use it as a safe when I'm done with it, and I don't particularily care for how it looks." Now, one might guess that she was intensely masculine from her lack of love for shiny things, but she did have a bit of a feminine bone left in her that had nothing to do with wanting money, or a man with a nice disposable amount of it. She had a thing for relics, particularily all things antique looking and- oh!- handmade of course, hand designed and inscribed, and oh yes... she had quite the collection at home. She'd been asked if she was a dealer a few times, but she'd responded quite lividly to that... imagine! Her giving up her antiques! Not on their life.
"...huh. Well bugger for you then, here's hoping she's right." She eyed the male up and down a few times before smirking. "Well, you look like you'd do a fine job handling yourself, but if you'd like an escort, I was just going to take a few things back to my workshop and ah... well, the rest I'm sure someone else will make use of eventually." Those horns sure looked pointy and fun. Why couldn't she have been born with something useful like that? Could have saved herself a bit of money on chiseling and puncturing tools she imagined- ha! Instead she just had this blasted hair, nice though it was, it always got in her face, even in a ponytail. Oh well, she had to try and keep up the appearance of a nice girl or she'd spend her whole life single, with only her devices to keep her company.

He chewed his lip in thought. He was not sure what to do with the situation. While the help the opossum offered would be lovely he did not know what he was really doing out here. He decided to decline the helpful help; he was not sure how long they would be able to handle each other’s presence before they snapped at each other. And while the challenge of exchanging words would be wonderful, he really should focus on the task.
“I would not want to put you out, especially since I do not know who it is that I am in search of. I am sure that you have much better things to do with your time.” He narrowed his eyes, looking away from the creature, since he was not angry at her but the canine that has sent him to this predicament. “I really wish that Mnemosyne had told me for whom I was looking for.” He muttered under his breathe.

She snorted to herself, rolling her eyes before giving another smirk that lacked any sort of innocence. "You really are a stubborn ass of a male, aren't you? Not uncommon for the gender I suppose... if this is an ego thing about being led around by a woman, you can shove it, but if you're truly concerned about my time, rest assured, I am really just finding ways to amuse myself." She sighed to herself in frustration, glancing about rapidly as if a commission would just pop out of midair and finally give her something to DO with herself.
"Besides, I wasn't kidding when I said I needed to go into town, which I assume is where you'll be wandering aimlessly next. My apprentice gets... fidgety when I'm gone for too long." The feline certainly was a handful but BOY was he strong. Not that she wasn't capable of handling her own share of heavy lifting, but he just made the unloading process go by so much more efficiently.
"Did this Mnesyone-whatever truly believe you'd know the person you're looking for on sight, or might this truly be a wild goose chase?" She had insight into the act, actually, having done it to the poor Corvistowne feline once or twice when he was being... bothersome. The big brute could be quite clumsy sometimes, and his arrogance wore on her nerves. She could tell she'd been the only female thus far able to tolerate him for extended periods of time, from what she'd gotten he seemed like quite the bully towards anyone who would submit to him.
But that simply wasn't in Varuna's nature. She glanced at the rodent once more before considering introductions; had she asked for his name yet? No, not likely. She didn't remember giving hers either. Oh well, her social habits were terrible, let him give it a try if he wanted to; she was content either way.

He hated to admit it but it was true that this could be a wild goose chase. Sometimes when she got caught up in her work she would forget what was going on around her. Heaving a sigh he decided to toss it up for chase, he would just have a yelling match with Mnem later if she was serious – it was something to look forward to.
“I will just take it as a hoax; I have better things to be doing with my time anyway. Sorry for bothering you . . . “ He was about to turn around and head out when a sudden thought came to mind.
He had just recently found a few spots that he would narrow down for the shop he was about to open. The next few steps on the list were to find workers, both those to deal with patrons and those to create pieces for him to sell. From what he had gathered from her collections and request for the jewel that she had thrown away, maybe she could be more of a use to him after all.
“You would not happen to know of any metal or jewel crafters that would be looking for a job in the Capital, would you? Anyone who might be looking for an apprenticeship would also be welcomed.”
