"It's a pleasure to meet you, Lore!" He had twisted to peer at her, about to ask what sort of tea she would like, and his busy hands slowed to a partial rest. They grasped a tea pot, his slender fingers running over the smooth surface as he let a thoughtful look fall upon her and the vice that held her head. Curious. He smiled to himself and turned again, setting the pot down on the stove and seeking out one of the many boxes that might have what he wanted. "That vice must cause dreadful headaches, am I right?"
Personal questions... Oh yes, oops.
Ah well, it was for the good of the girl and, honestly, she didn't seem the sort to mind. At last he found the box he was looking for, containing packets of a tea that he felt Loreta might like.
"I don't know if you're much of a tea person but let's see how this one takes to you, yes?"
Adding the tea to the pot so that it could begin to brew, he turned about on his heel and returned to Loreta once more. There was something more contained about him now, eager...but more contained, more business like. It was quite sudden, possibly even a bit unsettling if you weren't used to his sudden mood shifts. Mechanics, however, were Hatter's passion. The one thing aside from Her that could stabilize his constantly churning mind.
"Now, you were asking about prosthetic legs. Shall we begin from the top?"

"Yes, actually, it does. My leg binding wasn't nearly as big of a pain as this one. Of course it probably should have, I mean I would probably have a leg if it cause pain rather than numbness." Loreta wasn't phased by personal questions. They were just like any other question to her. They all deserved some sort of answer. Loreta just had a habit about being blunt of a bitch about it.
The only tea Loreta had ever really had was bitter, and was supposed to make her migraines disappear. It never had worked. "I'm willing to try anything, especially if it can help with a headache. I've never had anything actually sooth a headache before."
The heron didn't notice his sudden and unnerving change. She was used to mood swings. She had lived in one of the most depressing and down trodden regions in the world, hadn't she? A mood shift wasn't uncommon in her eyes. It was completely and utterly normal. She did find Hatter creepy though, but it was more in that creepy scientist sort of way. "Top is better than starting at the bottom."

Hatter flashed a lopsided smile as he listened to Loreta. She was such an interesting and unique figure, so much more comfortable with him than many others were. So many were put off by his odd mannerisms and his tendency to ask invasive questions, but not Loreta.
Refreshing, really.
With a smile dancing over his features, he nodded casually and settled into the chair nearest to Loreta. "Quite true, but I suppose you're lucky then... If your head went numb, then you'd risk losing it too and heads are far more important than legs, yeah?" He chuckled lowly but went on without pause nor hesitation. "This tea, however, should help. Won't eliminate it entirely, thanks to that vice, but it'll help."
Hatter was confident in his tea selection. It wasn't a well known brand and, in fact, was made by one of his many acquaintances for medicinal purposes. Hatter found the flavor mild and unoffensive but its brew was effective nevertheless.
"When it comes to prosthetic limbs... Bias would say that I am the best. My skill is...quite unlike most." Should he go into detail? He had built his friend's legs, had he not? They worked beautifully too... "It is, alas, quite taxing on my part and most likely more than you could afford." He mused on this a bit, debating a discount for his current company. She would be worth it... Yet... "There are a good deal of others, however, that focus primarily on prosthetics that would also be good for you."

Well, at least the tea didn't come at a price. "I figured I wouldn't be able to afford something from you. I have money saved up, but I doubt 100 could cover much of anything in the area of mechanics." She gave a frustrated sigh. "I know a chemical Corvie can put on a leg for cheaper, but I honestly don't want it to fall off. To know anyone who specializes in prosthetics would be lovely. Also a general price frame would be fantastic."
Everything good in life was expensive. It was also bound to get fucked up rather nicely if you thought of a good plan. "I'm not cheap enough to go with someone who does soddy work though. I'm willing to save up money if I have to. I've waited this long I can wait longer. I don't want to buy a leg and have it fall to bits as soon as I take a step. I don't want to hop anywhere for the rest of my life either."

Hatter shifted slightly, leaning forward with quiet interest. Her points were quite valid and he could agree with them all thoroughly. Chemical Corvies, while they excelled in their fields, were not meant to be attaching limbs. Not to mention that one would need to already be in possession of said limb to have to attached or reattached.
No, a maker of prosthetics would be far more along the lines of what she needed.
"Between 50 - 150, I would say...but it would depend heavily on the sort of quality you wanted. Either way, m'dear, I wouldn't show you to a shoddy craftsmen, I guarantee you that." The whistling of the tea kettle caused him to pause for a moment, grinning once more as he swept to his feet. Returning to the kitchen, he fetched the kettle from the stove and gathered a small tray as well. Sugars and the sort, in case she found the tea a bit too strong for her liking. Pouring a cup he set it lightly before her and settled back down to serve himself a cup of his own. "Now then, you could always get a semi-inexpensive prosthetic now and, when you've managed to save up a bit more, return to me."
Yes. He was willing to afford her a discount. She was an interesting woman, she deserved the extra consideration.

Her goal was actually attainable. Her eyes widened as he left for the tea. She could actually save up the money for that! He heart skipped an actual happy beat. She stared at the tea cup that he place in front of her for a moment, listening to him continued.
Hell yes. Fate was on her side for once. TAKE THAT BITCHES!
Yes but she wasn't about to show her absolute joy. She was going to try and cover it up with a smile and a nod, "Thank you. That's actually a fantastic price." She smiled as she took a sip of the tea, doing a balancing act with her wings. She had figured out a long while ago how to hold cups without hands. The tea was bitter, yes, but not enough to make Loreta say anything. She had had worse, this was actually mild.
"This is a nice tea," Loreta said with an obvious look of surprise, "I usually hate tea. I'm more of a plain water or alcohol sort of person." Her utter joy was seeping through her words. Loreta had never been this cheerful before.

Hatter watched Loreta from across the table as he sipped on his tea. A smile remained permanently glued upon his features and he sparkled with pure content and amusement. She was so happy that it seeped out into her words and her actions even as she tried so desperately to reign it in. Even though he'd only known her for a brief while now, he could clearly see how important this all was to her and he was honestly quite happy to assist in that pleasure.
Everyone deserved to be happy.
Well, alright... Hatter could admit that not everyone deserved it, but everyone that was his friend on the other hand. They deserved to be happy.
"You're very welcome, Loreta. I take a great pleasure in taking care of my friends." As the attention shifted onto the tea, Hatter's attention shifted as well and his grin got all that much wider. Oh yes, Hatter's true love could be none other than his precious tea. "It is quite a nice tea and please, let me know if it does any good for your head. I'll lend you a few packs if it does." He tapped his foot momentarily. Alcohol? "I don't really drink much alcohol, it muddles my head."
Of course, this was coming from someone who seemed to be living in a constant state of 'not-quite-there'.

"Alcohol tends to do that, but it's one of the few things that distracts me from real life when I'm depressed," the heron said. She was being honest, not like she wasn't always honest, she was just wasn't lacing it with curse words at the moment. It probably had something to do with the tea, and... well she seemed to be liking the Hatter a bit more than normal people.
Actually she had a bit of a schoolgirl crush on him, but she wasn't about to admit it.
"Thank you for the tea. Most people just say "take off the vice" or "suck it up" to me rather than try to help with my headaches." She took a sip of the tea. If it fixed her headache to any degree it would probably take a while. She might as well take a few packets for later use. She never knew when one of her migraines or simple headaches would disappear at random. After years of having them she still couldn't pick up their patterns completely.
"But you're probably better off without alcohol. Hangovers are a bitch." She grinned. Less sappy subjects were better. "So um, besides prosthetics what do you do?"

Hatter nodded, taking Loreta's words into consideration. It wasn't something he'd do, get drunk to escape himself, but he thought he could understand Loreta's stand point. So many Torquehelmers were so sad, it was a pity really. He luckily didn't have to comment on her depression, it wasn't a subject he was particualrily good with, as she had already moved on.
He laughed this time, smirking at her words.
"Well, dear, I'd suggest taking off the vice myself but since I know that won't help...It's best just to find an alternate suggestion." He chuckled lowly, shaking his head briefly. "One day though, I don't doubt you'll be able to escape them."
His smirked had warped into a knowing smile, smug and mysterious and yet it was obvious that he would not clarify.
"As for those hangovers, Lore... I doubt they help those headaches of yours at all."
Just like that the smirk was back, completely jovial once again. Especially now that work was back on the table. Or rather, fun.
"Not prosthetics, Loreta." His eyes twinkled now. "Mechanics. Living mechanics. Clockwork dolls. If I were to make you a 'prosthetic leg', it'd be right and proper...a living limb. Exactly what you'd need too, for your deliveries: light weight, flexible." His smile widened and he leaned on. "Do you want to see some of my work, Lore?"

Holy hell, how was that possible? Didn't that require some insane amount of magic? He really must be as talented as people say. How could she pass up such an offer? Well, easily, but she wanted to see if what he was talking about was true. Her curiosity was stronger than anything else at the moment.
"Well, when you put it like that, even a bitch like me can't refuse. So, of course I would want to see your work." Loreta waved one of her wings in emphasis as she spoke. If she had hands she would be talking with them.
She was so close to a leg she could taste it. If she got a leg from the Hatter she would be set for life. Fate was actually being nice to her for once. It was quite confusing, but she wasn't going to take it for granted.
