She smiled at his as he gestured her in.
"I'm glad I can be of service to you." A look of surprise spread across her face as he disappeared through a wall in his office. She approached the wall to see that it was an illusion. Very interesting... she noted to herself as she passed through, taking in the new surroundings she didn't even know existed. She let out a laugh as she entered. It was brilliant. She placed the tanks where he gestured. She looked around the office at all the fascinating things he had. She didn't dare touch them, out of courtesy to Bernard and the fact that she assumed everything in here was some experiment of his.... well, the image of him on their first meeting popped into her head. She smiled at him again.
"Think nothing of it. You've been very kind to me since I've arrived. This is a show of my gratitude." Considering that Bernard was probably the only person in this entire Court that had any genuine curiosity about her and her region, he seemed to be the only one who didn't ask her stupid questions and piss her off because he got it into his head that the rarity of someone from her region was an excuse to annoy her.
"Your Highness... I had a question I've been meaning to ask you, but I've been reluctant to ask it, considering it is a bit bold of me... please tell me if I am out of line..." Ooo~ she was curious, but a little afraid of the repercussions... people in politics were so touchy. At least she got him in a good mood, right? She waited for his permission.

"Heh, well...it's easy to be open around you...you have a very open and accepting personality. Something more...difficult to find in the Courts sometimes. Trust me when I say I appreciate the gift, finding out the concentration of the toxicity of the air could help me to discover why the lungs tend to reject other substances..."
He sounded enthralled, but paused at the sound of her voice.
"A question? Certainly, ask anything you'd like."
He smiled at her, liking the fact that he could see her face now, it made it easier to judge her mood...he hadn't minded before per say...but this was awfully nice.
He wondered what she would have to ask him that might be considered bold? Did she have a question about his nephew?

That smile was certainly an invitation. Alright. Here goes nothing.
"Something you said to me on my first day here. I don't remember the exact wording, but I do remember the gist. It was about the proclamation about the Aces, remember? You mentioned how the proclamation was never overturned and even your nephew does not deem it worth his time to overturn it. But you commended me for questioning it," she was a little unsure how to ask the question. She felt odd. Words almost never escaped her, "What I want to know is: would my welcome have not been as warm if anyone else had interviewed me? That I was judged under your criteria and not anyone else's? Or, despite personal opinion, would the judgment have been universal..? uh..." She didn't feel like she was making any sense. BRAIN! What is WRONG WITH YOU?! ARG! It didn't actually sound so bad after she said it, though it did still sound a bit like she was implying the Court was inclined to a few individual's personal opinions rather than sound reason. It wasn't her intention, but she couldn't word it in a way to make it sound otherwise.
"I'm sorry, I'm just speaking before I'm thinking..." Maybe it was the fact that he revealed this secret little hiding spot. It showed her trusted her, and in turned cause her to drop her guard a little. It always threw her off when that happened.

Bernard couldn't help feeling surprised at the question. It was certainly within her rights to ask, he just hadn't sen it coming.
"Well...yes...it did depend on opinion there. I'm fairly sure that if Gaston had interviewed you and gotten that response, he would have tossed you out on your ear. I think that it shows character, that you're willing to stand up for personal beliefs, but not to the point of over-emotional loss of control. I thought you handled yourself well there. It's what I would have answered..."
He smiled at her again, he liked miss Heilyn, she was easy to talk to.
"Most Jack's quests are horribly biased depending on the King, I try to make it fair but...well, it all depends. We can't rid ourselves of our own thoughts and feelings, just push them back. And some of us can;t even do that, which is why Gaston will never be doling out Jack's quests. Not while I'm around."

Heilyn relaxed. She very much liked Bernard. He was a little more open-minded and level-headed than most of the Cards she'd met EVER in her LIFE. He was definitely her favorite person in the Court so far besides herself, the arrogant bitch.
"Thank you, then." the 'thank you' blanketing many things. Her head then tilted to the side.
"Gaston...." the name sounded familiar, "he's the rather large... and rather loud... deer-wolf who wears red, right?" she'd seen him but had gone out of her way to avoid him multiple times. For the first several times she'd seen him, she had no idea who he was. Just that he was very into himself, flexed a lot, and seemed like someone Heilyn would find exceedingly annoying. Yes, he definitely seemed the type to let his emotions -- rather than anything that resembled rational thought -- to govern brash actions. She shook her head.
"I'm sorry, I don't mean to distract you. Did you need me for anything else?" she kind of hoped he would keep her around to continue talking. She was of the impression that this would be a rare situation, considering how busy the man is. She admired him and wished to know more, but had to respect his time, which was much more valuable than hers.

"You're very welcome, and yes...that would be Gaston. If you'll be seeking him out I caution you to watch his hands...they roam."
He said with a playful smirk. He was fairly certain that Gaston wouldn't be able to put anything where Heilyn didn't want it.
"Not in particular, but if you would like to stay, be my guest. If you have any more questions, I'd be happy to help and now that I think of it...I'll' probably have some for you as I get started on this... Such as, does the gas in the bog often poison newcomers? I would assume it would have to but, how badly? Are Yarrows affected? Their lands have so many strange air bound toxins already...maybe they're immune..."
His voice trailed off slightly as he thumbed through two books on his desk, face alight with interest.

[Ack! I'm sorry, I didn't see the response! XDD]
She smiled at his answer.
"So that one is Gaston. From what I've seen and heard of him, I wouldn't be surprised if you told me he would've tossed me out just from the sight of my arrival. I've... been avoiding that one, to be honest," one ear twitched, "but if I do ever get stuck in an unavoidable meeting with him, I'll keep that in mind." She doubted someone like him would want to touch her, but even if he tried anything, he might get a bit of a surprise...
"Very few people venture willingly into the Bog. Most of the newcomers we find, we find all ready dead. The longest I've heard of of an Outsider surviving the air -- where the poisons are the thickest -- is one day. Even then, it wasn't pretty, and the last quarter of it could hardly be called 'living'..." she shuddered to think at both the pain is must have caused and the insanity level of the conductor of the experiment. She hated that man.
"I once got a breath of fresh air before I gained my immunity. Just from that one breath, I got a weird prickling sensation. It didn't hurt, but the result was immediate..."
"We have no idea about the Gardens' residents. I've never even heard of one until I left the Bog, so i can't help you there," she shrugged apologetically.

He smiled at her response about Gaston...no...he would never be able to do anything to Heilyn or Mephitisia that they didn't want to happen...
The King listened with earnest interest to her explanations on the bog air...interesting, he couldn't wait to start testing this stuff! As she spoke, he siphoned some of the air off into a series of tubs, carrying it over to the table and pulling out a few other various jars and a test tube rack.
"No problem," He said, distracted, getting excited as he began siphoning the air into separate test tubes. "I'll just mix the air with some of the Yarrow fumes here..." He shuffled for a thin bottle shaped like a tear drop...and decorative, it looked like a perfume bottle. He then tipped a few drops in and siphoned in air bit by bit.
"Ha! See! See how it goes completely clear? That means that the additives in the air actually mix, they're bonding! Look at the condensation already...it's making an awful lot of water...I wonder if a Yarrow might drown in the Bog..."
He flipped quickly through his book, hissing slightly as he gave himself a paper cut and shaking his hand for a fraction of a second, then jotting down scrawled notes.
"So...do you have any questions about the palace? Other than Gaston, I mean."
He asked, backpedaling slightly when he realized that he had technically already asked her that...he was getting too engrossed too fast, damn...

Heilyn was actually fascinated by strange things. Though she was the type who certainly preferred athletics to science (and would certainly be heavily frustrated if she ever attempted to do it), she never disregarded it benefits. She watched the fumes react, listening intently to his words.
"Lungs full of liquid, eh? sounds pleasant." she touched the glass, looking for the characteristic sheen in the waters of the Bog, "Did it neutralize, or create something different?" she wondered out loud. She felt a little useless here, but fortunately the only assistance that was required of her was to answer questions. She head turned to him when he hissed. Ah, little bookworms. They were so adorable when they got all excited over things that most people couldn't understand. It was hilarious getting two or more of them in a room together and their elation at realizing there was more than just them by themselves living in their own little world.
It was also loads of fun introducing the little hermits to sex, but with Bernard, the mischievous thought crossed her mind for a split second and was quickly discarded.
"Actually, something I was curious about. I noticed the colors of this Court were red, gold, and white. This is the only Court that's actually located inside the borders of a region, and there is a pretty large concentration of Highlanders here, especially in the higher-up positions. Has it always been like that? Are the other courts more diverse, or do they show a bias toward a neighboring region as well?" She paused.
"Pardon me if this is common knowledge, but information about the Outside was... a little difficult to obtain from within The Wall."
