Hrms, potentially mystical figurines. Those could be exceedingly useful. Tosiek also made a small mental note to look up stardust at a later date. Not at home; he was going to get adopted and never go back there. There were plenty of libraries around the Capital, though. Surely he could find the answer at one of those.
So the sparrow/skunk hybrid gave Thalia a nod, just now noticing that her hair was moving all on its own... and then she tied it back and now it squirmed even more. Fascinating.
"Uhm... wot's going on with your hair?" he asked as casually as he could as they began to pick their way through the crowds of the Bazaar. She really was one of the most fascinating creatures he had ever seen in his, admittedly short, life.
He hissed slightly when someone knocked into him, wings flaring back and upsetting an apple cart. Rounded ears went flat and he called out pitifully and rather absently, "Oh, dear, Papa, look wot you've done!" The cart owner rounded quickly on the man that had run into Tosiek and he continued on as though he hadn't even noticed the exchange.

Tosiek seemed to lie as easily as he breathed. It was as fun to watch as Monty biting the fingers off the little girls who came to their door peddling cookies. Thalia might have been midly disappointed about the lack of sugar, but she was allergic to chocolate and most nuts anyway, so it didn't really matter. And Monty giving someone a mauling was usually the highlight of her week. She was finding that Tosiek's unrepentant mendacity was swiftly becoming a highlight, too.
"It's kind of its own thing," she said, in response to his question. One of her tentacles had found an apple. She took a bite. Apples didn't make her throat swell or give her unpleasant rashes, which was nice. She ate a lot of apples. "My mom's does that too, and my half-sister's. Mine can't really do much expect flail, though. I think it's envious of the other hair. My mommy says hers can choke a bitch to death, and has, but I think she made up the second part to scare me. I've been trying to teach mine to grab things, but..." She dropped her voice to a whisper, and hoped the Hair didn't catch on. "But I think it's kind of retarded, you know?"

Thalia was a -very- smooth operator; she stole an apple so smoothly that he could only stare in blatant jealousy for a moment. Wow. That was just.... -wow-. He just might be in love.
His mind filed away her explanation about her hair and he tilted his head back slightly to eye the waving strands curiously. "No, I don't think it is," he finally responded, at least partially because the idea seemed to bother the cute little King. "You're still young yet; as your grow up, i think it might get better at doing stuff. You just need to let it grow up too, huh?"
Of course, all of that might be a blatant little lie as well, but at least there was some hint of truth about it. "Your mom didn't always have perfect control, I bet," he continued easily, bumping lightly against her side to get her to turn off into a stall. His ears went back as he pretended to look at decks of cards with the Queen of Hearts painted all over them. After a moment, and-- conveniently-- after the two police officers went by, he gestured for them to continue on their way.

Tosiek's words were mildly comforting. The Hair might be more useful when she grew it. It seemed like an awful long time to wait, though. Mom had been able to control it as far back as Thalia could remember, but maybe when she'd first gotten it, hers had been weird too.
Thalia had asked Mom about how she had came about the Hair in the first place, but Mom had gone off about hating men and hating children and how she had something pressing to do at Court which necessitated her immediate departure. The second time she asked, Mom had smiled kind of sharply and weirdly and said, "It was an accident, like you!" Thalia suspected she might never know.
There were more immediate things to thing about, anyway. They were nearly to the right stand. She grabbed Tosiek suddenly with a tentacle and pulled them behind a few barrels of supposedly "high quality spirits!"
She pointed vigorously. "There it is! See it? There are too many people around." There were indeed a lot of people who seemed drawn in by the promise the little figurines supposedly offered. "If we could distract them all...."

The boy was pleased that he seemed to have at least partially calmed Thalia's fears even though she didn't seem totally sold on his explaination. Well, that was fine. As long as she was slightly comforted and had time to get used to wotever it was her Hair might someday become. Perhaps it would be as wonderful as her mother's hair, which certainly sounded useful, or if it was actually... a bit retarded compared to the other members of her family. Still, retarded or not, Thalia's hair could do a great deal more than his fur could.
He turned to inspect the desired booth and his rounded ears flattened when she spoke of a distraction. A mob? He didn't have any lies big enough for a whole, freakin' crowd! She wanted an adult-sized lie and he wasn't certain he had that in him just yet.
Tosiek hrmed thoughtfully. "Wait here," he said suddenly. "And don't let your Hair steal anything. I need to feel out the crowd." This was going to be hard.

Thalia had to throw nearly all her concentration into keeping all her wayward limbs close and not perpetrating acts of vandalism, but she managed it. Or thought she did, anyway. The Hair was bobbing restlessly and her tentacles were investigating the barrels around her by poking and prodding, but nothing was being nicked, probably because there was nothing small enough to get hold of.
She looked curiously at Tosiek as he slid out of their hiding place. He seemed to have something up his sleeve. She hoped it would pan out, whatever it was. She really wanted to get her hands on one of those figurines. If he could manage to stage some kind of distraction, perhaps she could sneak in and grab one of the little buggers. Chaos would be good. They could escape unnoticed in chaos.
So she peered out from between a couple of barrels, and waited.

It took far longer than he desired to set up the needed scene, but after about fifteen minutes, it seemed quite likely that it was well worth the effort. And, thought Tosiek wryly, it'd better be. The likelihood of him coming out of this without at least some bruises were slim to none.
Flailing nearly into the statuette table, a small boy appeared, weeping violently, feathers flying, and a large Yarrow Gardens canine bearing swiftly down upon him. She was brandishing an umbrella like a weapon and the Selkie Lakes child began to scream in panicked pain.
It was easy for him to get attention, but then his howls went from indistinguishable to very clear indeed. "Don't hit me again, Mommy, please! I'll be good, I swear I'll be good! Just don't do me like you did Daddyyyyyy~!!!!!" Wotever attention he had not garnered previously was certainly his now, as people began to mutter in shock and the canine lifted her umbrella again in anger.

Oooh, Tosiek was clever. He had the undivided attention of everyone in the area. Some were trying to restrain to the Gardens woman, who was going all sorts of batty-bonkers with an umbrella. Some were yelling at Tosiek. Some had began screaming and fighting with each other. It was beautiful pandemonium.
Thalia slipped out of her hiding place, relieved that she didn't even need to try to be quiet and discreet, which she was pants at anyway, because no one was going to notice her amid the chaos.
A crafty tentacle snagged a figurine. Elation rushed through her. They had done it! She rushed away from the stand, unwilling to stay at the scene of the crime, and tried to get Tosiek's attention without drawing too much attention to herself. She ended up throwing an apple at him. Ruse over. Tosiek needed to find some way to extricate himself from the madness.

Inwardly, Tosiek congratulated himself on a lie that was obviously a soaring success. Not only had complete and utter chaos broken out, but he was fairly certain Thalia had managed to capture one of the elusive figurines for them. Perfect. Now she just needed to get out of the open so he could slip away and they could hustle off to discover just how magical the little totem may or may not be.
Thalia, however, seemed determined to stay behind until he was out and that, sadly wasn't going to be nearly as simple. There were people on all sides screaming their heads off and some of them were evidently of the mind that he needed some sort of bodyguard. Well, he -had-, but they'd pulled his 'Mommy' off of him and now he simply wanted to get away.
Tosiek sent her a dark, warning glance when she threw the apple; one of his captors turned to look in her direction.
"Hey, wot's that kid got?"
Blast it! Tosiek glanced at the adults around him and then kicked the one to his right. The man gave a hiss of displeasure and sent him a dirty look. The child blinked innocent eyes, and gestured towards the Torquehelmian who was taking an unwarranted interested in Thalia.
"Hey, man, where do you get off?" the now-injured man took a threatening step towards the Torquehelmian and the man twisted back to stare at his adversary in disbelief.
"Wot are you talking about?"
As the fight heated up, Tosiek slipped one step, then another, away from the men. Soon they were pummeling each other as well, and Tosi wisely exited the field. He tugged on one of Thalia's tentacles and swiftly raced away. He just hoped she had somewhere safe for them to hole up for awhile; he had a feeling they needed to get out of the Bazaar for a few days at least.
