Most of Tosiek's frustration stemmed from the fact that Thalia was so disappointed. He slipped a little closer to her and boffed her gently with a wing. "Hey, no worries, huh? Let's go find something else to do for awhile and in no time at all it'll be next week and we can try the monkey again." He gave her a hopeful smile from behind his spectacles.
"I know!" he suddenly exclaimed as inspiration struck. "I heard there's this strange old shoppe out in the old bazaar. There's a creepy guy running it and some lady who makes pies out of bad Cards. Let's go see wot they have to offer!" He took an encouraging step in what might have been the proper direction and gave her another of his small smiles. He didn't have any desire to be adopted by anyone creepy, but it would definitely be worth it if it cheered up Thalia.

Thalia had heard very vague mentions of a creepy old man from her big sister Helena, and if Helena said someone was creepy, then they had to be pretty damn beyond the pale. Thalia was sure it was going to be awesome, especially since the creepy man apparently helped people mutilate themselves in creative and exciting ways. And even if the prospect of doing something amusing to her flesh wasn't enough of a draw, the idea of people-pies was certainly enough to pique her interest.
"That's a great idea!" she said, mystical time monkey temporarily forgotten. She looked at Tosiek appraisingly, and gently fluffled the feathers on his head with a contemplative frown. Then, a grin. "I'll get something done if you do!"
Not that Thalia's mothers would really be shocked or appalled by anything she could possibly do to herself. Mama likely wouldn't even notice if she grew a second head (even though, if she did grow a second head, it would probably be the result of Mama going nuts with the experimenting) and Mom would probably only care long enough to roll her eyes and walk away.

Tosiek gave a low cough of concern. Finding the man was one thing, getting something down to himself was quite another. Still, Thalia looked cheered and excited about the idea and he wouldn't let her down. "Well, uhm. . . yah. I guess."
It probably wasn't the most enthusiastic response, but the boy didn't hesitate to turn and start heading for the darker parts of the Bazaar. It really didn't take them long to reach the shop.
Once within, Tosi found, to his despair, that the man in charge of it was frightening and scary, but at least he was willing to do whatever they desired for money. The skunk hybrid dug out all he had on him, which wasn't an amazing sum but enough to be of some use and let Thalia take over negotiations for what would occur to the two of them. Not that he necessarily thought trusting the girl with that decision was the best, but, still, it made her so happy.

Thalia had required a small allowance of time to think through her options, because the first thing that sprang to her mind was that she wanted everything. She wasn't going to touch the Hair (it little liked being bound with ribbons and such and would probably be quite distressed if she cut it; she planned never to let scissors near it), but everything else was fair game. Eyes, nose, mouth, navel, tentacles. It's not like her moms would care.
She eventually settled on a cute butterfly piercing design over the eye, and was quite thrilled with Tosiek's decision to go with glorious hair spikes of tremendous awesome.
She gleefully poked at the 'do with a paw. "See, it wasn't that bad! And now you look even cuter."
Some zygotic form of teenage rebellion wished her parents would care that she had just poked her face with holes, but she knew them better than that, and was mostly just pleased with the results.

Tosiek bobbed his head a bit uneasily at the strange new hair atop his head. Thalia poked at it and it felt odd and stiff, but not like his beak was. It was like some foreign thing was now attached to his head. The dingy mirrors in the shop were clean enough to show his changes, but he wasn't entirely certain he trusted his eyes there.
"I like yours," he answered truthfully instead. "It looks really good. And you didn't even flinch." He was simply glad that Thalia's suggestion for him had not involved anything that would stick a hole in him; he wasn't ready for that yet.
Unlike her parents, his parents-- or, at least, his father-- would probably throw a fit when he saw the glory spikes his son had acquired. His mother wouldn't say anything, though she'd probably stare in horror at his head.

Thalia did, in fact, hold no fear at all of needles, which she attributed to her Corvie side. It would be difficult to perform experiments on oneself if one were afraid of so trifling as a needle, after all. Come to think of it, Thalia had never really been truly afraid of anything, so perhaps Corvies, by biological necessity, totally lacked that emotional response. That would be an interesting theory to test. Maybe one day she could bungee jump off a cliff in the Sorgaire Range or wander into the depths of the Tulgey Wood and see if that provoked any kind of fear. In fact, she might do that anyway, just for fun, if one day she had the time.
Time. She needed time. Why did she need time? So she could go to the woods. What was there in the woods? Trees? Something climbed trees. Monkeys climbed trees.
"Hey!" she said, suddenly. "Shouldn't we be good again to test out the magical time monkey?"

"Well, we could," Tosiek said thoughtfully. "But we said we were going to wait a week." They'd tried waiting a day. Maybe it took a day and a half or something? Either way, the skunk hybrid tried pulling out the item in question and concentrated very hard on getting time to shift for them again.
He looked expectantly at Thalia and then suddenly realized that he could have just flashed them back to the scary man's parlour. He was suddenly very glad that their time monkey did not work. He shuddered but shook his head to Thalia. Nothing had happened. "But don't worry. We'll try it again tomorrow. And again and again until it works! Maybe it's on an odd number of days or something" He put as much enthusiasm into his words as he could. At some point, their mystical time monkey would work again. He was sure of it.

The next six days passed with the mystical time monkey entirely failing to do anything wonderfully magical, and Thalia was getting a bit impatient with it. It was just sitting there, obstinately refusing to take them back in time, and pretty soon Thalia got to thinking that the cheeky little thing was doing it on purpose, just to get her ire up.
Well, she wasn't going to let the monkey win. She was the boss of that monkey and the monkey was going to respect that, one way or another. She kept Tosiek and herself entertained for the duration (Mama hardly noticed she was gone), and when a week had passed, she issued an ultimatum to the monkey.
"You work today," she told it, "or I take you to the Selkie Lakes and pitch you into the depths." She thought that this was a perfectly reasonable bargain. "Tosiek, please make the time monkey work, if you will."

Tosiek licked the last of the ice cream from his claws and ave a small nod. His lie just a few minutes prior hadn't been enough to procure the ice cream, and they'd actually had to pay for it. Ah, well. If he'd known better-- he'd watched the mother and child behind them to discover it-- he would have told the man it was Thalia's birthday. The seller was evidently quite partial to treating kids on their birthdays. As expected, it caused parents to prefer him as a seller during the rest of the year. Very good marketing on his part, and if Tosiek had done it right, he probably could have gotten the vendor to throw his ice cream in for free.
"All right, Thalia," he said and picked up the mystical time monkey and stared deeply into its eyes. He concentrated on it and tried to get them to flash.
"I'm not just going to give you free ice cream!" the vendor said loudly as a familiar mother and child approached him.
Tosiek blinked and then grinned before wiping it swiftly off of his face. "Well, that's too bad," he said with a sigh and turned to look at Thalia. "I'm sorry I couldn't get you ice cream on your birthday."
"Oh, it's her birthday too?" the mother asked with a cheerful smile. "It's Madi's birthday today!"
