Thalia had no objection whatsoever to shameless mendacity, especially when it worked to her benefit, and if Tosiek was going to lie to get her some free ice cream--well, she certainly wasn't going to turn it down. She would smother it in chocolate and strawberries if she weren't allergic to both of them. She instead settled for huckleberry, which she enjoyed quite a bit. She and Tosiek were a pretty good team for getting whatever they wanted: what Tosiek couldn't trick people out of, she could surreptitiously steal.
She licked her ice cream happily, and wondered when Tosiek was going to get on with the business of making the mystical time monkey work. She wondered if she would simply supplant her past self, or if there were going to be two Thalias. That was an odd thought. Two Thalias could steal a lot of ice cream.
"Is it working yet?"

"It worked!" he hissed excitedly, though he wouldn't go into detail until they were a safe distance away. As soon as they settled down somewhere to eat their ice cream, he explained about not getting free ice cream and hearing the woman talk about it to the vendor, and then using the mystical time monkey and using that pre-acquired knowledge in order to get them free ice cream this time.
"It must be on a weekly rotation," he concluded, though that was certainly the limit of his scientific hypothesizing. He'd leave the rest of it up to Thalia.
Still, he was pleased that they had figured out how often they could use it, though five minutes once a week only seemed useful in very peculiar sets of circumstance. Like this one. Still, it hadn't been anything life or death, but it had saved them some pewters.

Thalia licked at her ice cream with annoyed harshness, managing to spread purple melty goo onto other parts of her face--Thalia had never been a very tidy eater. Once again, she had not noticed the mystical time monkey working. Probably, she thought, the cursed little thing didn't work for her at all, because mystical time monkeys apparently hated her guts. She didn't know what she had ever done to monkeys to deserve this kind of treatment, but she did not appreciate it one whit.
"Tosiek," she said, distressed, "there is no weekly rotation. The monkey isn't working. For me, anyway. I don't think the monkey likes me very much." Then she stopped thinking stupid: "Or it only works for the person who holds it. Tosiek, lemme see the monkey." She snatched it from him and willed it to work. Nothing. She issued mental death threats. Nothing. She gave the monkey back to Tosiek. "I think it's just going to have to be your pet mystical time monkey."

Tosiek gave a sad sigh as he accepted the item back. He didn't want it to just work for him; he wanted it to work for Thalia so she could be happy too. All he ever wanted was to make her happy. He finished his ice cream rather glumly. He didn't know how he was going to cheer her up now.
"Well, we can come up with a signal," he said, hoping that this would help cheer up the King. "And whenever I send you that signal you'll know we had a time jump!" He hoped this would help make her happier. He didn't know what else to do, really. He sent her a hopeful look. It was really the best he could do just then. Until the vendor returned and they could steal a new one for Thalia, they were stuck with just the one.

"Thanks, Tosiek." She did feel a little bit better at the prospect of at least knowing when a time jump happened--Thalia didn't like not knowing things; it seemed to be a genetic trait inherited from both her moms--and it was sweet of Tosiek to try to placate her, especially now that her ice cream was gone and she had nothing on which to take out her feelings of vexation, but she was not entirely satisfied. She needed to do something fun to take her mind off her massive monkey failure.
"We should do something epic," she said, decidedly. Like discovering a lost treasure or defeating an evil army of undead reanimated by necromancer Corvies bent on world domination. That would be fun. She wondered how Tosiek felt about battling zombie hordes. "Come on. Let's go steal something that actually works."

Tosiek was glad to see that Thalia was cheered up, at least a little bit. So he set up the signal for her, a wink with an alternate wing twitch, and was glad to see her attention was shifting again. Of course, her suggestion frightened him more than encouraged him, but he couldn't say no to the girl, especially not after the failed time monkey experiments. He just bet it wasn't going to turn out well, whatever her new idea was.
"Epic?" he echoed, trying to keep the unease from his voice. What did she mean by epic? Like, kill somebody? Still, she nabbed him and they were off to steal again. He already started his mind on how to cover whatever craziness ensued from this epic adventure. He didn't argue as she led him on their way to their next quest together. He had never really had an interest in stealing before, but he certainly enjoyed covering for the pretty King.
