"Oh..." Xiven said. She wasn't about to pretend that that was interesting in any degree. She was quite disappointed. It was sort of lame that she had run into someone who basically did nothing in the Courts. Then again she hadn't the slightest idea what Mom did. She just knew it was something useful.
That or they kept Peaches around for sheer amusement. It didn't really matter to Xiven. She tapped her claws on the marble floor, her tail swishing side to side. She wanted to ask a question, but her mom said it was bad to be rude even if you were a Queen. The Queen of Hearts got to order people's heads to be chopped off if he really felt like it. Weird standards. Weird politics. Maybe she would understand it when she was older. Probably not.
"Why are your eyes like that?" Xiven's tail twitched as the question escaped her mouth. Screw manners.

"Yeah, yeah, I know," Heilyn replied to the kid's apparent disappointment in an amused tone, "Trust me, I'm none to happy with it either, but the region's fairly new to everyone so, I don't think they're even quite sure how to react, but that's my personal opin...ion..." she trailed off at the child's sudden question. She was taken by surprise a bit, then the corner of her mouth curled again and she laughed. Leave it to a kid to throw an adult off-guard with nothing but pure innocence.
"Like what, dear child?" she gave Xiven a broad grin. Now she was just pulling the kid's tail (figuratively). Heilyn knew exactly what the kid was wondering. Hell, she knew at least half the adults she'd encountered so far wanted to ask her the same thing.

Xiven narrowed her eyes as she watched the adult. That was just plain mean. She was pretty sure the coyote had seen herself in the mirror, she didn't have to pretend to be confused. It was pretty obvious that her eyes weren't like normal compared to everyone else.
She flattened her ears to her skull as she spoke with her eyes still narrowed and her tail twitching. "Why do your eyes have slits in them like that? They're pretty, but why are they like that?"
There. She said it. Was this Heilyn person happy over her curiosity. "And my name is Xiven. Not "dear child." I don't like being talked down to even if I am little." He tail it the marble floor with an empathic thump. If she wanted to play it cute and cuddling Xiven was more than welcome to play it cute and braty. She was a Queen even if she was little.

Heilyn's tail gave a wag at the child's reaction. Alright, that was cute, but it must stop now before it stops being so. She could only stand so much of that kind of attitude before it made grated on her. On top of that, this child was not in her care, was the child of someone higher than her, AND was even higher in rank than Heilyn, too! She'd get her ass handed back to her on a jewel encrusted silver platter if she tried to discipline the child. She dipped her head in a half apology.
"I was just playing, no offense meant. My apologies, Xiven. Thank you for the compliment, I'm glad you think they're pretty. Most of the people from my home region have eyes like this," she gave a shrug. The poisons and the isolation for so long probably caused the unexpected mutation she thought quietly to herself, but bringing that up to someone so young would lead to far too many questions with answers far too confusing for someone so naive.
"It just is. We haven't really figured out why."

Heh. At least she was polite about the apology then. Xiven straightened up, ears perked at her response. Most people at her home had eyes like that?
It just.... is? Really now. There wasn't an explanation for it? She doubted that. Those were the words that parents used when they didn't want to explain things like sex and torture and... other things that kids shouldn't know about. That just made her curious. He tail flicked as she tilted her head to one side. "I bet the mutation has something to do with the environment. The Bog is... filled with poison right? Then is that why your eyes are pretty like that?"
It sort of made sense. Poison had weird effects on people. At least, that's what Peaches said when she explained why trying to steal her medicinal tea was bad. "Nothing just is. There's always a reason."

Though she didn't baby talk children, she sometimes forgot how very intelligent they could be. It was then that Heilyn realized that she wouldn't be able to get much past this child. She was one of the bright ones that didn't just accept something because an adult said so. She had to laugh. Brilliant.
"How fortunate that a natural born Queen should be so sharp. I keep forgetting how much people know now. You'll have to excuse me," she apologized, "I feel like I've explained the same things over so many times about my home region... it becomes tiring." Though, truthfully, half of the reason why she didn't explain was because she thought Xiven wouldn't really get it. However, by saying this, she put the child somewhat on the same level as the adults.
"That's the theory, that the poisons and nearly two centuries of isolation in them bred the mutation into our genes... Xiven. Don't ever listen if anyone calls you stupid."

Xiven wiggled a bit from her victory. Being right was something she enjoyed, being called "sharp" was something that made her want to dance. Not many people complimented her even if she was a Queen and a child of at least one important noble. She wasn't the most talented of children compared to everyone else. Meh.
"You're home region sounds really interesting if it can do that to generations. I'm sorry you have to explain it to everyone, but don't you think it's worth it? Something normal to you is definitely extraordinary to everyone else!" Her tail flopped about as she spoke. She was getting entirely too excited over this. With a bit of blush under her fur she looked down at the ground with a smile still plastered on her face.
"I won't listen if someone calls me stupid," she said quietly as she tapped her paws on the marble. She looked back up at the coyote, not sure if she wanted to ask the question or not. "So.... I'm guessing that smell is also because you come from the Bog?"

She smiled at the girl's wiggle.
"It is kinda of neat, even though it did take a lot of getting used to. I used to consider myself pretty normal back home, but then I come here and I attract stares. It's fun, but it's got its drawbacks, too," Speaking of which, I should take a visit back home soon... in the last letter from home, it sounded as though her dad wasn't doing so well healthwise. Considering that she was the only one he listened to when anyone reminded him to eat and sleep sometimes, she wasn't surprised, but it made her worry. She pushed the though to the back of her mind, smiling at the girl's question. Ah, yes, the smell thing. One of the reason why she wished to obtain human form. No fur, no oil, no smell. Yes, maybe a little in the hair, but not as much. It would be such a big help in social interactions.
"Yes, it is," she answered, "it comes from the oils coat our fur to protect our skin from the poisons in the water and mud. So, as much as it helps us in there, out here it's a bit of a curse."

"That's amazing though," Xiven said as she looked up at the coyote with wide eyes. She really did find her quite interesting. If her tutors had fun stuff to say she would have listened more often. Unfortunately they weren't so she didn't and ended up getting Peaches or someone else to read to her some of the more complicated books with the huge technical words.
"Everyone gets stares sometimes, though. I know my Mom gets stared at for her jacket sometimes. Sometimes people give me weird looks, but I think that's because people pity Torquehelmers or something. It doesn't make much sense to me." Xiven shrugged. Then again she didn't have super weird depressions or anything. She was perfectly happy with herself.
Even if Papa wanted her to be a Highlander. Why did people think she was stupid? She honestly knew what Papa didn't approve completely of her.
