Calanthe looked upon the majesty of the Highlands with awe. The land was beautiful and dense with forests and lush rolling hills of green grass. Of course nothing could compare to the colorful palette of the Gardens with all of the luscious flowers, but it could not be denied that the Highlands were stunning. Shaking her head, Calanthe brought her thoughts back to the issue at hand. "Now where am I supposed to find that apothecary? She didn't didn't exactly give me the greatest directions, or any landmarks to go by for that matter...." Cal thought to herself. Well, she was just going to have to find someone that might possibly know where she needed to go, or at least point her in the right direction. The only problem was that there seemed to be no one in sight. "Might as well start walking then."

White, white, white with gold, white with red, white with gold and red... Sascha sighed noisily from where he perched in the tree, his brows furrowed with frustration. He wanted to meet new and interesting people, but how was he supposed to do that when he wasn't allowed to leave the Highlands? Sure, new and cool people came to the Court every once in a long while, but for the most part it was the same faces! Outside of the court it wasn't at all better. He thought the Highlands themselves were pretty, but he had nothing to compare them too! And the people.. He liked their swirls, but he got tired of the same old boring colors. Not like there was anything he could do to change things. He sighed again, returning to his peeking and spying, moving from tree to tree, bush to bush. White with gold and red, white with gold and red, white with gold and... pink? And lilac?!Barely managing to suppress a squeak of excitement, the boy moved closer to the elegant canine, doing his best to keep out of her line of sight. Oh, she was so pretty! And so different! His little tail wiggled with excitement as he dove into a bush closer to her, brown eyes round as he peered out. Wow! She didn't even have swirls or slashes!

She started walking through a very dense forest. The sunlight that was able to make it through the trees glistened among the mosses and stones among the forest floor.
"This forest is so beautiful and serene. I could walk in here for hours and hours and not have a care. Maybe it's not such a bad thing that I don't have any directions..." Cal thought to herself. Being among nature was a very peaceful experience, and it was nice to find a place other than the Gardens to get that same sense of excitement. As she continued to walk along the mossy path, she began to notice all the intricate vines snaking along the trees, as well as all the tiny bugs crawling in and out of the tree bark.
Calanthe kept on walking, and as she did, she swore she heard some movement behind her. She turned to have a glance behind her, but nothing or no one was there. Shrugging it off, she kept on walking through the forest, noticing more and more light coming through. "Finally, the light at the end of this tunnel of trees..."

The woman continued to walk, and Sascha resisted the urge to grumble a little. He was, after all, hideously awkward on the ground, that awkwardness multiplied almost a hundredfold when he was trying to be sneaky in a forest.
Stupid trees and their stupid, lumpy roots.
All the same, he continued to sneak after the brightly-colored canine, his momentary frustration forgotten as she began to lead him to somewhere... new. Somewhere he'd never been before. He was almost as delighted as she looked to be, beak-mouth hanging open in awe. He didn't notice that she'd stopped to see if she was being followed, didn't notice that he was waddling a little faster than she was walking. He was far too enraptured by the sights all around, the smell of the forest, his delight at being somewhere new...
He walked right into her with a squeak-chirp, scrambling in alarm away from the woman, brown eyes huge with alarm. His huge ears twitched back and forth as he tried to think up an excuse. "I-I-I-I..." what could he say?! So long as he didn't tell her that he was following her, it would all be okay. "I was following you, okay?!" he blurted out, then covered his mouth with his wings, brown eyes huge.
Ooops.

Just as she was about to break through the edge of the forest, Calanthe fell to the ground as something or someone fell on top of her. She did a haphazard somersault over some tree roots, and finally landed on her back, all fours up in the air. It didn't feel like she had broken or sprained anything, so she got up on her feet and shook herself off. It was then she noticed the creature who fell on her that caused the unexpected tumble.
He, she, it was a Jack. A Jack?! In any case, this Jack seemed upset and scared. Cal immediately felt bad for it. It twitched its ears a few times before stuttering "I-I-I-I...I was following you, okay?!"
Calanthe was stunned at his statement (she could definitely tell now it was a he). But that feeling went away quickly, and she found that she could only smile at the creature. He had wings and a beak like a bird, but the large ears of a bat. His colors were beautiful, and she loved how the brown and blue made a swirl pattern on his wings. She quickly regained her thoughts, and tried to think of a response that didn't sound stupid.
"It's quite alright! You just startled me a little bit. Are you ok?"

The boy blinked owlishly at the Yarrow woman, his expression going almost... suspicious when she spoke so kindly to him. His ears swiveled back, overly expressive in their every movement, and then perked forward again, and he slowly crept towards her, seeming to study her. Abruptly, then, he sat back on his haunches, wings folded in such a way that the little thumbs could twiddle. He seemed to be thinking about something very, very hard.
"I'm okay," he finally answered, head tilting to the side so that his mane tumbled about his youthful face. Then, just as quicjly, the strange half-beak half-muzzle split into a wide grin, and the boy seemed to brighten all over. "Sorry I startled you, I just didn' wanna creep you out or somethin'. I'm Sascha!" He puffed his chest out proudly.
"I jus' like watching people and everyone's all so similar here," he practically whimpered. Then that sadness was forgotten, and his next statement tumbled out in a rush of overly-excited words. "So when I saw you, it was like: WOAH! How cool! All different colors! An' pink an' purple an' yellow! So it was really exciting but then I 'membered what my mom said. Well, she's not really my mom, she's my dad's fi... financiee or somethin' like that, but anyway, I think she likes my other dad too, but he's real busy bein' a King of Hearts which is a super-important job and he's been it for a long time! My mom, well, kinda mom, is a King of Hearts too! An' my sister's a King of Spades, but it's not as impressive 'cause my brother, my other brother who's not Captain Andrei, he's a QUEEN of Spades, just like my dad! Well, not the dad who's a King of Hearts, but still! Can you believe that?! Anyway, my mom always told me tha' I should be careful with Yarrows 'cause sometimes, sometimes they don' like boys. An' you are a Yarrow, right? All pretty flower-like colors an' stuff." a bright blue tongue ran over his lower lip as he stared hopefully at the woman, little tail twitching.

Cal noticed that the Jack started to look scared, or even wary of her. She knew she should be upset that she was even communicating with a male, but the fact that he was a boy somehow changed her perspective. Maybe the tumble had mixed up her thoughts...
But very soon the boy's expression changed to that of excitement, and all that spilled out of his mouth made her head spin even more. Two dads? A sort of mom? A sister...an older brother, who's a Queen of Spades? And who is Captain Andrei? All of the information that was being thrown at her by this eccentric little boy, by Sascha, was just too much. She wouldn't deny that she had a small soft spot for him, but she could tell he could probably be quite the handful in his diverse family. After his little rant seemed to be over and done with, she finally edged into the almost one-sided conversation.
"I don't believe I've heard that much come out of someone as small as you before. And, I will not deny that I am a firm believer in the ways of the Gardens, but...well, you are a different sort of fellow, and you don't seem to be like other men. Oh, by the way, my name is Calanthe. It's quite...nice to meet you." She said the last part hesitantly, but she did mean it, although it was against her beliefs.
"Now that we have the formalities out of the way, I was wondering if you could help me. I need to find my way to an apothecary in this area of the Highlands, and you may just be the guide to get me there."

Sascha's huge ears twitched as he stared at the woman. He blinked. Was it really that strange that he'd said so much? He had a big and interesting family, and he hadn't even gone into the really interesting bits... But he shrugged it off, deciding that she just didn't talk a whole lot most of the time. She was probably one of those introverters or whatever it was that he'd heard his mother mention. Something like that.
Even with all of those thoughts crouding his mind, he managed to sit quietly and listen to her speak, but not without fidgeting every once in a while. He can't help a small interjection, though. "Tha's prolly 'cause I'm not a man, not yet. Not like my dad. He's all covered in hair and testerostone, tha's what I heard my mostly-mom say." he fell silent again, letting her finish.
An... apothecary? Sascha had no idea what she meant by that, but it sounded interesting. Everything about the pretty canine was interesting, and if she wanted his help... maybe he could manage to find it for her, and be like the charming prince? He grinned at the thought, practically bouncing in place.
"Well, missus Calala.. Calannie.. Cala, I can show you where anything in all the whole Highlands is!" he stood up straight, puffing his chest out proudly. "Follow me!" and with that, the boy began to march off in the direction the woman had been going before. It seemed as good a place as any to start, truth be told.

The fact that Sascha practically leapt out of his skin in order to show her the way was just plain cute. She didn't care at all now that he was a male. Sure, he was a bit talkative, but that only added to his charming personality. Cal was quite glad to have run into him.
As they began walking along, she started to get lost in the beauty of her surroundings again. "No time for that now...don't want to get lost or trampled on again..." she thought to herself. She had to pay attention to where Sascha was leading her, or else she'd never find her way back out. She did notice that they had ended up in an enormous field, tall with fresh green grass. It seemed like it would be easy to get lost in such a field...
"Are you sure you know where you're going? I don't mean any offense by that, Sascha. I've just never been to the Highlands myself, so I don't know where anything is, which throws me off a bit I guess."

Sascha's odd gait took them slowly through the undergrowth, but he made up for his pace by babbling almost unceasingly as they walked about anything that crossed his mind at the time. It was a total stream of conscious - whatever he thought about poured from his beak without his knowing, and so by the time the woman finally injected with a statement of her own the boy paused for a minute, thinking hard to try and bring his mind back to where they were and where they were going.
Going to an apothecary. ...Right.
"Yeah, I know where we're goin'," he replied, brightly as ever, but there was a hint of nervousness in his expression and he glanced around them. An apothecary. He'd meant to think about it while they walked so that he could try and figure out what that was, but he had completely forgotten and spent the walk babbling again. "I, um, jus' wanna make sure we're talkin' about the same thing, right? Apothecaries... they're like dentists?"
The bat hybrid beamed up at the woman, ears flipping back as his nerves started to show even more. Ooops. It was entirely possible he'd screwed this up. But he did know where they were. There was an awesome peach orchard over the next hill, maybe he could take her there to make up for it?
