Eir would have flipped the boy off if he'd had fingers. Since he could not, he settled for sending the hybrid one of his death glares. The boy was now on his Eat List. The crowd didn't seem to fall for the jest comment, which was probably understandable since the teenager really didn't look much like one for jokes.
He listened as the slaver quickly sold each of them for a tidy sum; Tosiek and Thalia were either going to the same home or to family-related homes. A single woman came up to pay for the pair of them and beamed as she led them off through her grumbling neighbours. As for himself, he was fortunate enough to be going home with the hideous one-armed, mold-faced woman. He assumed for her son. Eir simply contemplated whether or not he'd just kill her or eat her as well. She didn't look very appetizing.

Thalia didn't like the idea of all of them being split up, but if one of them had to be taken out of the group, she had to admit that she was kind of happy it was Eir. She figured he could manage, and would probably be happier without them anyway. She hated the idea of either Tosiek or herself being alone. But maybe, since they weren't split up, they could put their heads together and craft some plan of escape, and then rescue Eir, and then ride off into the dark night as champions.
The woman who had bought them--gads, they had been sold, like fine sausage or some kind of rare collectible--babbled merrily at them as she lead them along, obviously pleased with her purchase. Thalia didn't want to know what kind of experiments they were going to be put to, but she figured they would find out soon enough. Maybe it would be something relatively benign, like giving Tosiek a second pair of nostrils.

Tosiek was quite fortunate to have no idea what Thalia was thinking towards him, since he figured that she was more likely to undergo the knife first. The idea of experimentation on himself was frightening enough, but the idea of anyone doing anything to her was enough to freeze up his brain and cause his heart to pound painfully in his chest. He was going to have to figure out a way that they'd go after him first.
Unfortunately, he had no idea how to go about that. He couldn't hide the worry, but his mind was trying to work it's way through the panic so he could think. He'd have to see what happened and discover how to make himself more enticing. It would be difficult. He glanced swiftly over to Thalia and knew the job of making himself more enticing than her was very nearly impossible. He had to figure something out. He dedicated his attention to the woman to try and figure out what they were going to be used for.

Evidently, he still wasn't considered trustworthy. They kept him tied up and threw him onto a wagon to haul him across the disgusting and debilitated town. His ears went flat in disgust as he watched the buildings go past. Corvistowne was evidently the source of filth and freaks. He watched the whole parade with the eye of a pitying lord over the common masses.
When they finally reached her home, Eir made a sound of disgust. She expected him to stay in this dump? What a load! Someone threw a bag over his head and the teenager immediately went into an abortive, flailing rage. He got some sounds of pain when he managed to knock one of the slavers, and there was one particularly satisfying crash, but he ended up tossed into a cage and the door locked firmly in place.
Eir froze and began to listen curiously around him.

The lab looked intensely sterile, which was something of a surprise given the appearance of the rest of the underground facilities. There were numerous holding cages for test subjects, some small enough for bandersnatches, some large enough for something like a bull to move around in. This Corvie was clearly quite well off.
"All right, kids," she said, with the kind of over-sweet friendliness employed by pediatricians, "first we're going to get you over here and give you a general physical evaluation, yeah? Run a couple of blood tests, try to access what uses you would be best put to..." She grabbed Thalia suddenly and lifted her onto the exam table, poking and prodding, sticking her with a needle to draw blood. Thalia bore this with patience. "You don't happen to know where you got these delightful tentacles, do you, sweetheart...? And is your hair...it moves! How odd."
"My moms," Thalia said. There was no point in withholding the information.
The woman tittered happily and all but pinched her cheeks. "That's wonderful, wonderful! I'm sure your bloodwork will come back clean and you'll be perfect for a couple of my serums...Here we go, honey, right into this pen here. It's not so bad, has padding and blankets and everything, there we are. Good girl. All right! You next, son."

Tosiek cursed under his breath when the lady just nabbed Thalia. He turned slightly green when she suddenly jabbed the needle into the girl and he only just caught himself in time to keep the whimper from sneaking out. And Thalia didn't even seem slightly bothered by it! He was not only shocked but very afraid of what was going to happen when the lady decided to his blood, because he wasn't too naive to think it wasn't going to happen to him next.
He stiffened up when she nabbed him and stuck him on the table, and he was utterly deaf to her prattle as she pulled out another needle. He stared at it with wide eyes and she sent him a quizzical look before nonchalantly sticking it into his legs.
He couldn't help it; if he hadn't already been white, he would have done so then. His eyes rolled back and he fainted.

Something suddenly stuck him in the hindquarter and Eir calmly turned his hood-covered head in that direction. They were either injecting him or pulling blood. Either way, it was little more than a vague annoyance to the young stallion. His ears went back and he said, "Can someone take this stupid thing off of me?"
"Oh, not yet," a mildly indulgent voice informed him. Eir's head unerringly followed the sound of the moving voice. There was a low laugh. "And that's exactly why."
Eir snorted and just settled himself in for a wait. He followed the sounds, trying to guess what they were. A gentle scratching indicated that his captor was taking notes. The prick had gone away and there was the sound of glass moving around, then footsteps exiting quickly. He turned his head to follow that, but the scratching remained on his other side.
"Yes, I think that'll do it," the voice said. "Let's get your head uncovered."

Thalia had been quite surprised and very worried when Tosiek had passed out--she wasn't sure if Tosiek was just not a fan of needles or if the woman had gotten all sneaky and injected something terrible into Tosiek rather than just taking a bit of blood. So when the woman had moved the boy into the pens (the same as Thalia's; the woman apparently both had some degree of sympathy and expected them to be mostly harmless), she immediately began to gently shake him, face pinched in a nervous frown.
"C'mon," she muttered.
"All right!" said their lab master. "I'm going to take these samples into the other room; you two try to get some good rest and make sure you're all ready for the experiments. We'll like begin tomorrow morning. Get some sleep now, honey; your delightful little friend already has the right idea."
But now was not a time to sleep. Now was a time to plot. They needed to get out of here, somehow, because the lady made their heads explode or something. She shook Tosiek a little more vigorously.
"Tosiek, are you okay? You need to wake up now."

Tosiek groggily came to, staring up at Thalia with concern and confusion. What was she doing here? His eyes focused beyond her concerned face to the unfamiliar ceiling beyond. Wait; where was here? He sat up suddenly, and very likely would knock his head against hers.
"What--?" He didn't get the full question out as suddenly everything came rushing back. He made a sound of vague distress, swiftly dropping his head so he could hide his expression. Oh, lies. He'd fainted away. He would think like a girl except that even that had been proven false by Thalia's perfectly calm acceptance of the needle. Oh, he was such a pansy!
"How long was I out?" He hoped she wouldn't make fun of him but, more than anything, he hoped she wouldn't think less of him for not exactly excelling around needles. He didn't know why, but they really bothered him.

The cloth slipped suddenly from his head and Eir blinked in the dim light. Not that his vision had any trouble adjusting. After being in the bag for so long, he could see perfectly well in the low lighting. He turned to look at his captor curiously.
His mind couldn't immediately make sense of what he saw before him. After staring silently for a few minutes, Eir was finally able to make out at least part of what stood before him, watching his expression with an amused expression. The creature before him was a mess of other Cards. At least, that's all Eir could guess it to be. He thought he saw a cat tail and a dog's nose with a bird wing and a bat wing springing from the sides. The body, he could not tell what it had begun as.
"You're the son?" Eir asked with disbelief and mocking in his voice.
