"It's not going to be fun now, Rai, but you're going to thank me, I think. You're just too young to appreciate it. Besides, some of this stuff tastes pretty good if you can survive it." It wasn't quite clear how serious El was about that statement. "Let's call it a day, we don't want to get you in over your head."
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- More laterness.
"This is kind of annoying to learn, kid, but if you get used to doing it, it helps get some game. The less you have to run, the less energy you have to replace. Of course, you'd probably prefer some roughage, but this is still a good skill to have. I'm not quite sure when your suit learns to use weapons, but whenever that kicks in, it will help, too."
Elias stopped talking, because he was about to show Rai how to use his bolo, and you just can't hold something like that in your mouth and talk. With an awkward turn of his head, he got the bolo spinning enough to be able to launch it at a nearby sappling. "Practice that until you can get it spinning." El retrieved the bolo and stood back to watch from a safe distance.

Actually... it was pretty impressive watching Elias with the bolas. The grey-green eyes of the boy were wide with amazement and when he eyed the canine again it was with a bit more respect. Still, he was a Heart, and that meant that he was just naturally better than Elias.
The colt accepted the weapon and carefully shook it out, watching the two balls at the end bounce heavily against each other. He purposefully turned on his moderate ability, and, with a careful whirl of his neck, began to spin the weapon carefully. He gave a mental smirk, prepared to show the canine a better throw, but in that moment of not paying attention, he somehow got the ropes off their circular path. The bolas flew around his head and neck, the balls at the end pounding hard into his throat.
Rai gave a surprised and pained gasp, eyes wide with shock as he tried to not show the tears in his eyes at just how badly that had hurt.

El's eyes narrowed as he smiled a small smile, seeing Rai take to the bola. His eyes abruptly grew to saucers when Rai slipped and the bola wrapped around his neck, hitting him in the throat. "Easy now, you just breathe. Swear if you need to, my ears won't fall off." He was hoping for a little something so he could tell if the colt was breathing. He did what he could to help the equine without the use of hands.
"That was a good spin, better than I expected to see for your first time. You got some talent, kid," he said soothingly. Right now his goal was just to keep the colt calm, and try and keep him from feeling silly. He'd laugh about it later, and hopefully that indignation would help the event seem less traumatic later. Plus, El was a jerk and made fun of other people's misfortune, so it would happen sooner or later anyway.

The colt couldn't immediately curse, but there was venom in his eyes. When Elias had finally managed to work the twisted rope from around his neck, Rai swallowed convulsively, wincing when it hurt all the way down. There would be no permanent marks or damage, but he was certainly going to be bruised for quite awhile from that one failed throw.
The boy also didn't know much cursing, other than the few words he'd heard Elias use and he experimented with them now, though they came out hoarse and a bit squeaky. Also, he didn't have the best grasp of context yet. Nevertheless, he finally ended with a, "Why would anyone want to learn this stupid weapon anyway?"
His tone and manner was belligerent, based fully upon his extreme embarrassment. He should have been -better- than Elias! It wasn't fair that he should embarrass himself so badly.

"Oh, shut up," Elias told Rai. "I already told you, you're just embarassed. Don't forget that there's a difference between proficiency and mastery, not that I can aspire to such lofty titles. Get up and walk around some. Take a nice brisk pace, and go around about a 20 foot circle." The walking would force Rai to breathe without Elias telling him to do so.
"Those things work a lot better with hands, but I've caught my share of prey with that thing. So if something's bigger and faster than you, that bola will buy you some extra time to catch up or get away, depending on what you're doing." Somehow El's tone hinted that the statement was too significant to be just about hunting. Maybe someday El would speak of his venomous hatred for the Lowlanders in depth. Today wasn't that day.
"When you're ready, try it again. You'll get it."

Shinrai laid back his ears at the older man's words, and his tail twitched in agitation, even as he still had trouble breathing through his now sore throat. He nearly tossed his head up in the air in defiance, but the beginning of the move tinged warningly all up and down his neck. He settled for baring his teeth slightly at the older man.
His legs were only freshly healed and still prone to bouts of weakness, but now that came only if he pushed himself too hard, or, more specifically, if Elias pushed him too far by telling him to rest. Well, he was sick of being pushed around! He only owed the canine so much for saving his life; he didn't have to put up with all of this nonsense as well.
"I don't have to and I don't want to," he answered airly, then put his back towards the dog and began to walk off.

Well it was about time the little horse showed some more fire. El chuckled softly to himself and reached down for the bolas with his mouth. Rai wasn't far away, so he only needed a couple spins to get the speed he needed to send the bolas winging at the colt's feet. This had the desired effect of binding the colt's feet together, especially since the colt wasn't expecting an attack.
Elias calmly walked over to where the colt was laying after having gracelessly toppled over. He sat on the colt's neck, well outside of nipping range. He didn't put his full weight on the kid, but did use enough to hold the colt down.
"Nope, you're right, you don't have to do anything I tell you. Of course, when you decide not to, I decide to do something like this. The world's too big and dangerous to get upset and embarrassed by an honest mistake. Now, I'll say it a lot of times, well past the point where you're tired of hearing it: you learn more from a mistake than from doing it right the first time. Now grow up, pull yourself together, and let's get back to the lessons. You all calm now?" The words and tone promised that El would be equally happy leaving Rai tied up as he would beating the equine into submission.

The colt gave a squeal of fright when his legs were caught followed swiftly by one of indignation once he figure out exactly wot had happened. He struggled beneath the careful weight of the canine, eyes rolling white when Elias shifted slightly. The man was almost on top of one of the equine's nasty bruises, but Rai didn't immediately realize that the other Marshdweller was very careful to not actually press in on the wound.
The boy, for all that he could be a bit headstrong, wasn't entirely stupid and now he sat for a long time, lying flat in the mud and tried to decide his best course of action. It was fairly obvious that Elias wasn't going to let him up until he agreed, but, *#&$ it -- and despite feeling very grown up for even saying that word in his head-- he should have gotten that right the first time and he should have done it better than the stupid, lowly Club! It wasn't fair!

El sat there calmly, and a little amused. This would most likely be a defining moment the the relationship of the two. If not, at least they would come to some understanding. He shifted his weight slowly up and off of Rai's neck and shoulders.
He didn't say anything, because the ball wasn't in his court. Nor did he untie Rai's legs, but he wasn't stopping the colt, either. Partly out of spite, of which El had no short supply, and partly as a lesson. At some point the equine would indeed need to be able to free himself from bonds.
El watched to see if the youngling would free himself, and how quickly. He wasn't worried about a fight, he could still beat the stuffing out of the youngling, and he was pretty sure that he couldn't use a pain ability yet. They'd just have to reach an understanding before then.
El watched to see what Rai would do.
