The colt's ears stayed back for a very long moment before he finally began to struggle against the bonds of the weapon. His first few minutes of fighting were mostly useless as he put all of his frustration and rage into kicking and wiggling against the ropes, and, of course, it did nothing.
When he had worked off all of his frustration, however, he lay there on the marshy ground; breathing hard and slowly calming back down. He was still annoyed, but at least now he had a better handle on his anger.
"All right, fine," the colt said quietly. "I'm calm." There was still a hint of defiance in his voice, but he was at least really thinking again and not just reacting in anger. "Why are you better at that than I am?" Elias could probably find a bit of sullness as well, but it might not be worth it to listen for it.

Elias watched the colt struggle, and somewhere in there it seemed to click that fighting fruitlessly wouldn't help. Maybe, HOPEFULLY, that would translate to a lesson in keeping a clear head. Here's hoping.
El was a little surprised by the colt's question, and paused for a second to see what Rai was really asking. Was he talking about a Heart's proficiency with weapons? Probably, and if there was more to the question than that, El could address it later. "Well, kid, what you get, along with other hearts your rank, is a proficiency with a weapon. That's your guarantee that you can pick it up, understand a little about it instantly, and more or less not kill yourself with it, depending on the weapon. That's really all the ability gives you. Practice with a weapon, and you start to get some experience, and expertise. That's what lets you hit the target more often, or whatever depending on the weapon you're using. You should have seen me the first time I tried that. I didn't have any abilities to keep me from boogering myself up, see?" El moved close so that he could pull some fur aside and show the equine a scar he had on the side of his head. "It was not pretty."

The colt, after a few moments of waiting, realized that the canine wasn't just going to let him out of the bollas. Jerktard. The boy began to work at the ropes, feeling just a bit of give and trying to concentrate on expanding his legs far enough out that he could slip at least one of his slender ankles out.
He stopped his struggles when El leaned over to show his scar and small triangular ears flipped forward with intense interest. Wwwooowww. That was actually exceedingly cool. His ears went back as he tried to stave off that thought, but, still... "You got that from the bollas?" he clarified curiously, even though the answer was rather obvious anyway. Unless, of course, Elias was just trying to pull his legs, which wouldn't be overly surprising, really.
The colt was almost absently stretching at the bollas with his legs again and abruptly, his right hind slipped out. Haha! After a few more pulls, he was free.

Elias nodded. "Sort of happened the same way that you hit yourself, only this one hit me in the head. Ever seen that? Someone get hit with something blunt so hard that they get a cut from it? Hurts like #*&$, I'll tell you that much."
He watched as the colt worked his way out of the bonds. "Nice job there, kid. I'll make you a big time tracker in no time, I suppose." He unraveled the bolas again and handed them to the colt. "Wanna try 'er again? Now, what happened was, you thought to much or something, I don't know, but it interrupted your rhythm. Gotta keep that head moving, and you won't have a problem. I'll show you one more time." He started slow, one two three over, one two three over, and when he had enough speed, the release. This time the bola wrapped around the target's "neck" and smashed into the face and throat. "He won't be happy in the morning."

No, the boy had not seen that before, but he'd seen plenty of other violence and blood and death, and suddenly he had a mental image of his brother. The colt looked suddenly away, half-heartedly listening as El explained wot he had done wrong.
Still, the practical demonstration managed to recapture his interest as he imagined the target as one of the Lowland dogs who had attacked them. Immense pleasure at the sight of the imaginary canine's face being slammed in was suddenly overwrought by a deep and full realization that Elias was a canine.
Overwhelming fear replaced all else, but he knew that he couldn't run. In a sudden state of blank panic, the young horse was at a loss for wot he should do. As El went to fetch the bollas again, Rai had a sudden desire to bolt, but the past half hour had already proved that wouldn't work.
Slowly his brain began to worm free from the utter panic and tried to work itself around the connundrum it had just discovered. El was a canine, yes; but he'd gone far out of his way to be certain that Rai was cared for and gotten better and now the man was trying to train him on how to survive and how to defend himself. He didn't have a reason to fear Elias... other than the obvious fact that El was freakin' crazy. Still, his heartrate leapt up as the dog approached him again.

Elias was taken aback by the sudden change in Rai. The body language stiffened, and his eyes went wide. "What's wrong with you?" El asked, a little uncertainly. That. Was. Weird.
He didn't think any of the poisons he was giving the colt to toughen his immune system caused any sort of hallucinogenic reaction, or stimulation. He'd certainly had enough to know if that happened, blast it. But why did it kick in right now?
El asked again, "Kid, what are you doing?" It was a little frightening, the bald look of panic on the face of the equine. Panic, that was it. Why? The part of it that made it scary also made it irritating to Elias, and he was in danger of getting blunt and crabby.
He couldn't tell if the kid was working through it, or what was going on. He seemed to calm down, so Elias took a cautious step closer. Didn't want to have to tie up the kid again. Might do some damage in this state. What was wrong?

Rai's ears were working like crazy: forward, back, and sideways. Even his eyes began to show a slight rim of white when El took another step towards him and he felt his body tense up, a small skittering type of jump in place that showed, again, that he was close to bolting. In this state, it might seem that somehow the bollas -had- managed to do some sort of serious damage.
No, no! Think, think through it! Think about being helpless in the bed and how only Elias had been around to help him. Sure the doctor came by to check sometimes, but it would still have been quite simple to lie and say he had succumbed to his wounds. It wasn't all canines. It wasn't all canines. He had to make himself believe it. It wasn't all canines. Please don't let Elias come any closer just yet. It wasn't all canines.
"I'm okay." His high, breathy voice belied the truth of that statement. "Just... uh... give me a minute, okay?" Maybe it would be better if he talked it out, but he couldn't seem to do anything.

Elias quirked his brow. The kid obviously wasn't fine, and something had him very spooked. His tentative step had seemed to make things worse, so Elias guessed he would have to wait for whatever this was to pass. What on earth. . ?
Elias sat down and inspected the colt from where he was. Equal parts consternation and concern colored his face. What in the world was wrong with the kid? Rather, what was suddenly spooking him like that?
Elias went over what had happened before this change came over the kid. They were working with the bollas, the kid took a shot to the throat. Was that doing something? No, Elias figured it would take a shot to the head to get that sort of crazy coming out. Then Elias had tied the kid up for sassing him. Was that it? No, the kid seemed okay eventually, after he calmed down. Elias couldn't help but think that this had just come out of nowhere, and he was utterly confused.
"You see something I missed, kid?" Elias asked. That was really all that he could think of, some beasty or something out in the forest. He scanned the line of trees, not seeing anything, but that didn't mean that nothing was there, and hadn't been there.

Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out. Hyperventilating was bad. Breathe in... breathe out.
"No," he said softly. "Everything's okay." Or would be soon. It was all right. Breath in, breathe out. It was a relief to see Elias immediately scanning their surroundings, and it helped to further calm the colt's nerves. By the time he was fully back under control, he was a little embarrassed about the whole thing.
Elias had no reason to hurt him after all of the work he'd put into getting him healed. Unless the poisonous plants all helped to flavour his dead corp-- No! Breathe in, breathe out. Everything was okay. They were going to continue training and then they were going to strike back at the Lowlanders. That was their call, their duty. And Rai wanted revenge.
He gave Elias a weak smile, looking like he would tremble and drop at any second. "Okay, wot's next?"
