Mnem took a deep breath and a moment to collect herself. Getting her plant back was going to be more difficult than she had originally anticipated--and she and anticipated quite a struggle.
"His name," said Mnem, "is Asaph. He was a friend of someone I used to know."
And she really didn't want to dredge up those memories. Asaph had always been sort of a vague apparition, a theoretical construct of a person that floated behind someone much more important. Mnem was certain this was still the case. Asaph had never had his own agenda, aside from keeping himsef warm and well-fed and moneyed; he always did the bidding of others.
One other, specifically.
She sighed. "We're going to need to track him down." Where the devil would someone like Asaph hide out in Capital City? Somewhere nice, probably. Asaph always did have an image of himself. Fancied himself a sophisticate, liked to try wines and watch the sunset. It was fake as cheap costume jewelry, but Asaph always persisted in his delusions.
"We're going to do a bit of sight-seeing," she told Aderlass a moment later. "In the nicer part of town."

For some reason the mouse was opposed to thinking that this ‘Asaph’ fellow was a ‘friend’. Listening to her story he gathered that there was more to it then she was telling – which was fine by him. It was her story and what she figured he should know he was guessing she would be wise enough to let him know.
Walking next to her his ears perked up when he heard the words “sight seeing” and “nicer part of town”. Those two words sounded a lot more tempting then what they had just gone through. He needed to shake off some bad memories as well. He hated when they snuck up on him like this. For some reason he was betting that he was going to spend the night in the pub and bar, though a night alone did not sound really tempting. He did still have that favor that Minh owed him. Maybe he could call upon it tonight.
“Where is Minh, by the way?” He asked a little distractedly before continuing on track with their conversation, even if it seemed to be a little forced. “I do hope that you are planning on including food somewhere in that plan as well. I am starting to get hungry, do you not know. Those cookies of yours were not very feeling.”

She had thought about it before, but she really had no clue where Minh had run off too. If she knew the feline, she had probably randomly decided to don her pirate gear and galavant across town, burning down pubs and frightening wenches and contracting venereal diseases or whatever it was pirates did for fun. Curious that he should ask, though. She wondered if it were just polite inquiry or if there was something lurking beneath the surface of the words. Plenty of time to figure it out. She had a feeling this was going to be an extremely long day. Days. However long it took.
"Cafe Yumm is on the way," she told him. "We can grab some coffee and a lovely bit of lunch. Then I think we have an appointment with Mr. Snook." Snook was the manager of a very high-end apartment complex. Mnem had extremely briefly considered staying there when she first came to Capital City, before she came back to her senses and accepted that luxury was really just a waste of money. But someone like Asaph would stay there.
"And I've not the foggiest idea where my dear Minh is," she added, feeling rather impish. "Why do you ask?"

“Simple curiosity and I want to consult her on a favor she owes me,” he replied easily to her question. “It is simply that I do not often see you two parted. Then again when I do see you it is usually at the apartment.”
Following her towards where Cafe Yumm was, he ignored the questioning looks that she sent his way, pretending that they did not exist. The idea of coffee and lunch made his stomach growl in anticipation. While the cookies had been lovely they did not really do well to keep one full.
“Mr. Snook? I do not believe that I have ever heard of that name. I guess it is a good thing that we will have an appointment with him then.”
He hesitated for a moment, wondering if he should ask questions about this Asaph, then decided that if the opportunity presented itself later he would ask. Reaching the café he held open the door, waiting for Mnem to enter first.

Mnem was not entirely satisfied with his answer, but she figured there was time enough to poke at it and tease him later. He was right, though; for all that she could be a bit of bubblehead, Mnem really did enjoy Minh's company. She was one of the very people Mnem could tolerate on a constant basis. And, to be fair, Minh was probably one of the very few people who could tolerate Mnem on a constant basis. She let the subject drop. Now, what she really needed was a cup of coffee and some soup.
It was easy enough to flag down a waitress and place an order. "I would like a raspberry mocha, please, and some of your darling squash bisque." To Aderlass, she said, "We don't have an 'appointment,' as such, but I don't think we'll have much trouble being granted an audience."
She was working back to the point where her reputation preceded her. At least, in certain circles. The thought made her quite happy.

Motioning to the waitress that he wanted the same that Mnem had just ordered, he watched as they walked off then turned his attention back to her.
He raised an eyebrow in question when she said that they did not have an appointment. “I am seeing a lot of new sides to you today.” He said jokingly. He really was amazed at some of the things that he had discovered about her; and to think he had thought for the longest time that she just stayed in her lab venturing out when needed.
“So if we do not have an appointment of sorts, how are we going to get him to see us?” He wondered at her tactic. Maybe she knew the man? That or maybe he was scared of her.
Wondering over it a little, he thanked the waitress when she came back with their food and drinks. Yum, coffee.

How best to answer that question? She tapped absently at the table and sipped her mocha (very delicious; this is why she liked to come to Cafe Yumm--it was one of the very few places of its kind that served constantly above-par food and drink) while she thought of a reply. She needn't be that careful, really. She and Aderlass did business together; he obviously knew some of what she was up to, even though she did keep him out of the loop on a few things. And he really was quite a decent fellow--for a man.
"The circles we each move in sometimes overlap," she told him. "We've met once before, and he certainly would have heard quite a bit about me anyway. And I'm more than certain I can convince him that cooperating with me would be in his best interests. Loyalty," she said, with amused reflection, "can be bought, and bought quite cheaply most of the time."

He was quite amazed with what she had just revealed about her circles and interactions. He hoped that she did not think that he could be bought, because his loyalty lay only with those he trusted and felt could benefit him in some manner.
Taking a large sip of the coffee he was delighted for find that it was some of the best coffee he had tasted in a long time, though he had almost burning his tongue in the process. He would have to make it a habit of coming here more often, he thought with a small nod.
He bet he knew the answer but it also did no harm to ask. “So do you mind telling me then how you plan about going and creating this meeting? What good will it do meeting us to meet this man? And the coffee here is some of the best that I have ever had.”

Mnem shrugged carelessly and spooned a bit of her soup. Warm and delicious. Excellent. "I would wager that Asaph is staying at his establishment," she said. "And even if he isn't, I'm sure he checked it out, and Snook will be able to point us in the right direction."
That's the assumption she was currently riding on, in any event. Snook would point them to Asaph, and Asaph would point them to--well. Investigation really wasn't as thrilling as novels made it out to be. But it was still early in the game. There was plenty of time for a building to explode or a tense stand-off. She had a feeling that things were going to take a turn after they tracked down Asaph, anyway, and it wasn't going to be a good one.
Whoever stole the plant must have known that Mnem would come looking for it. What did they have planned?
It was a troubling thought--she hated not knowing things, especially when such things were directly related to her livelihood or personal safety--and her expression turned pensive as she continued eating.
