He watched as she ate her soup. Thoughtfully sipping his coffee which he had cupping between his hands, he become a little uneasy about the silence and the memories that tended to sprout from it. Deciding to distract himself he offered something up for conversation. It also appeared that she was perturbed about something, something that he seemed got the inkling did not have to do with the plant – or at least something more.
“A coin for your thoughts?” He finally asked when he could no longer stand the silence and the memories it brought, especially after their meeting with the gang of youths.
He did not fully expect her to reply or anything, he just figured since the situation had presented itself he might as well offer the chance for conversation. He had learn a lot of new things about her so he figured he might as well as take the chance and learn more about her. They were partners after all.

"There's nothing in particularly interesting going on in my head," she said, though she couldn't quite keep the apprehension out of her voice. "Plots, endgames. What I usually think about." She paused, and stirred her spoon in her soup. She ran her next few words through her head a few times before deciding to say them out loud. She did not like admitting any kind of weakness. But if she had to spill her worries to anyone it may as well be Aderlass. "Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. That plant is...very special to me."
Intrigue is a good deal less fun when she is not the one keeping the secrets. She's growing increasingly restless, which is making her increasingly irate. She needs to get moving again, get back on track. Get to the bottom of whatever the hell is going on. She eats her soup quickly, intent on finishing it off so that they may again get moving.

It seemed that this plant was much more then ‘very special’ from the response it’s missing was getting. Curios that. Eyeing her for a moment he decided that it would be safe to press for more information on the plant.
Raising an eyebrow, he asked “Mind me asking how such a special plant came into your possession?” He was guessing that either she had stolen it from someone or that it had been a gift. Either way sounded like it would make an interesting story to hear. Especially from one such as Mnem.
He sensed that she was wanting to continue on with their search and their ‘meeting’ with Mr. Snook, especially with how she seemed very content with finishing off her soup quickly. It was not very odd that he saw her seem ruffled and thus he wanted to know what had caused it even more. He was guessing that it had to be something personal to cause such a reaction.

Mnem felt a very strong compulsion to lie her ass off, but if Aderlass was going to stay with her on this, he would probably find out anyway, so there was no point. Making something up would only make her look like she didn't trust the mouse, and she did, more or less.
After the waitress brought them the the check and left, Mnem said, "The means by which I acquired it were not exactly..." Oh, what the hell. There was no point in being delicate about it, either. "I stole it. A few years ago, when I was still learning everything there was to know about plants. I've cared for it ever since." And as long as she was being perfectly truthful: "I don't regret doing it, either. I need that plant. And I appreciate it a good deal more than its former owner."
She stood abruptly. Aderlass wasn't quite done with his own meal, but she was tired of sitting. "Come. I don't want to dally longer about meeting Snook. We can talk on the way, if you like."

Amused at her story, finding that he was not really surprised by what she had done to acquire the plant. When she stood abruptly, leaving him and his drink unfinished, he made haste in finishing it off. Throwing coins on the table to pay for the food he hurried to follow her. He was indeed interested in continuing their conversation, though her sudden departure suggested otherwise on her account.
Catching up with her he asked, “Who did you steal the plant from?” .
She must have been stocking her target for a while to know that the person was not using the plant for it’s proper worth. That thought brought along another. What was the proper’ use of the plant. Knowing some of the plants that Mnem grew and kept track of he was a little worried to know what this plant would do, especially with it being more special to her.

As they made their way out of the cafe and back onto the path to the apartment, Mnem thought about how much of the story she really wanted to tell him. If she started from the true beginning, she could be talking forever, and probably not stop until someone just up and shot her in the head and had done with it. She didn't want to be out of control like that. It was...tacky and unpleasant. So, better to just focus on the information that was relevant to his question.
"Years ago," she said, "I was apprenticed to very knowledgable--if rather rude and unfeeling--botanist, and it is from her that I learned much of what I know now about plants. She had one in particular in which I took an interest. She didn't...care for it the way she should have, that much I could see. It wasn't thriving. So I...decided to take matters into my own hands. When I decided that I had learned from her all that I needed to know, I took the plant when I left."
She rounded a corner. "It works out well for the both of us, you see. I take care of my darling, and in return, I get..." She dropped off for quite some time. "I get the chance to prove a point to someone who rather forcibly needs to be shown the truth."

A little surprised at her story – something he had not really been expecting to hear, he was more surprised with the fact that her story hit a little closer to home then he wished it to.
“I can understand those feelings.” He glanced to his right as he said this, allowing his hat to shade his eyes a little. He was not aiming at a guarded look, he was just a little afraid of what would have been passing through his eyes at the moment.
He had yet to truly tell anyone about his past, keeping the horrifying secrets to himself while trying to overcome them. He had struck a nail in the coffin – so to speak – and he was planning on doing much more then that to his past. Burning it sounded like a really tempting idea. Yeah, that is what he was going to do.
“It is funny how revenge, of any sort, can be such a leading emotion.”

She looked at him curiously. "Revenge," she said, with a thoughtful frown. "Yes. Yes, it can." Strange, how so much of her life was concerned with exacting vengeance on one person. (One person who, in her darkest thoughts, she feared wouldn't even care.) She wondered what he would know about that. This was an interesting opportunity, then. Both to hear a little more about her partner and to divert the attention away from Mnem herself. If the conversation had continued on in that vein, she might have revealed more of herself than she really wanted to. Which was most definitely not on the agenda for today.
But she would have to wait a few to continue that talk. They had arrived at the apartments--a classy, lovely structure on all counts--and Mnem smirked slightly at her friend. "Here we go again," she said. "Let me do the talking."

Once again he fell into step behind Mnem, taking up more of a protective physique more then anything else. Hold the door open for them, he followed her inside.
The apartments showed their location. This was defiantly a pretty-penny place that he could not afford at the moment. He wondered who exactly this Mr. Snook was to be located in such a place, especially considering where Mnem had set up her own living quarters at. How exactly had she come to know him . . . and how well did they know each other exactly? Shaking it off as something that he did not and would not want to know he followed her as she made her way towards the back of the entrance hall.
Reaching a nicely made solid oak door, he had to hide a smile when, only giving one harsh rap on the door Mnem threw it open. It seemed that she entered without even second thought – something which he greatly doubted she ever had.
He followed suit, closing the door behind them. Facing them across from a desk was the high back of a chair. Very mysterious . . . and over used he thought to himself, regarding the back of the chair. ((OOC: Mnem's actions written with approval and permission))
