The conversation had taken an interesting turn. But she had already given out a good deal of information; she might as well continue. Aderlass knew some of the story--she may as well tell him the rest.
"I didn't come to Capital City immediately after," Mnem said, carefully. " I set up my own little business, in the Gardens. I sold herbal remedies and salves and the like, of course. But some of what I did was of...questionable legality. Some...black market activity, selling poisons. My product was very high quality; it sold for a good deal of money. I made quite a few contacts all over the realm, some of them in Capital City. I used my home as my base of operations, very secluded, my deadly plants carefully hidden. My business went extremely well for a while, and then, for reasons I'm still investigating, I came under suspicion from some of the local authorities. So I packed up and left."

Well that definitely was quite an interesting and unique history. He wondered, even if a little sarcastically, if the fact that she sold poisons and had dangerous plants had anything to do with her activities being questioned. In passing he wondered what her parents were like and if they knew what their daughter was up to, even if she was an adult and out from under their rule.
“Why have you not set up another shop here in the Capital?” he pondered aloud. She would defiantly get more patrons that way then the way she was doing it now. She could service herbal remedies and potions to the public and probably still keep her underground system going as well. It might be a little harder to pull of but at least she was benefiting people in a good way as well.
This really was an odd change for the day, seeming that he had first come over to their place out of boredom and now found himself breaking and entering another person’s hotel room.

Mnem almost snorted. "The idea of having a normal shop...bores me. I enjoy making the products, and I enjoy seeing them sold, but dealing with dull people and the tedium of management day in and day out does not appeal to me at all. As for the other aspect...I've found that when your contacts receive information that you're under light investigation by the authorities, it tends to make them exceedingly nervous. A few of them who were up to even more illegal activities than I was stopped dealing with me immediately. Others merely distanced themselves. I've been slowly reestablishing...rapports...with many of them since coming here."
She paused, thinking of her small adventure with Shinrai and how that miserable weasel Akhar had told her about Eran trying to keep her down by collecting some of her associates and keeping them from doing business with her. She wasn't going to stand for that. And she hadn't. "And there are some people who don't want me back in business at all, and have been hampering my efforts. I'm taking care of them. I DO plan on being fully back in business."

He nodded as he listened to her.
“I wish you the best of luck, then” He did not doubt that she probably did not need it; after all she was determined enough to have gotten this far he was sure she would see it through. She did not seem like the kind of person who would take personal attacks well, even if some of them were deserved on one level or another. He would love to see her get back on her feet and get her revenge on everyone who had attacked her in some way, though he really did hope that she would not cause them to lose their lives or any precious limbs in the process.
Admiring her strength he came upon a thought. “How exactly did you and Minh start working together? Were you together from the Gardens or did you meet here in the Capital?” He surprised him to some degree just how much he did not know about the two he had spent much of the last year with.

Mnem was surprised by the question, though she supposed it was an appropriate one to ask. She hadn't thought about that in a long time. At this point it just seemed like she had always known and lived with Minh.
"We met shortly after I had arrived in the Capital. In a library, actually. I don't even remember what book I was looking for. We also met a very nice--if extraordinarily timid--skunk named Kelasia. We all went to a cafe--the one you and I recently visited, actually--and Minh had already procured an apartment, and I ended up joining her there. Minh doesn't have much to do with my business, really. She just tries to keep out of the way of my plants. Some of them...er...aren't very nice and are a wee bit prone to biting. She does her experiments in a different part of the complex."

Experiments? He had not really thought of Minh as being separate from the works that Mnem did, the thought just never had occurred to him. The two of them where constantly together, talking about something or other that they were working on. This was something completely new and it took him a moment to process and see the two in a new light.
Just when you thought you had someone or something down they had to do or reveal something that made you think differently. What was up with that?
“Wot kind of experiments does Minh usually work on?” He could not think of anything that do other then work with plants with Mnem. It was true that she had taken his blood when they had first met, he still was not quit sure what she had done with it and frankly he was pretty sure, now, that he did not really want to know.

"Oh, Minh gets up to all sorts of nefarious activity," Mnem said cheerily, happy to see the conversation once again sliding away from her. "She likes working with physiology, it seems. Adding things to people. Subtracting them."
She smiled widely and a bit wickedly. "You've met Monty. And survived, which is nice, and congratulations on that. She experiments on banders quite a bit--there was a whole pack of them we had to run out of the apartment because they were...quite violent and unpredictable. Monty was their leader. As soon as we tamed hir, the rest of them calmed down a bit, but...that's neither here nor there really. Minh just likes instigating mutations in people. I rarely ask about the particulars. We each have our little areas of expertise, and we usually keep to them. I've little desire to end up with an extra arm."

He gave a shiver. That was not something that he particularly wanted to hear about the feline. He was okay with mutations . . . as long as they did not happen to his own body. That was something he just could not take. He resisted the urge to rub his horns, the horns that were the bane of his existence. Her work was probably something he would question her about. As long as no one ended up dead he was fine with just about anything he did not actually know about.
Giving another small shiver he searched for something to change the topic to.
“When the bloody hells do you think your ‘friend’ is going to finally show his face around here?” He asked, a little more irritably then he probably would have liked. If the guy was not going to show himself soon then he was going to go make himself some coffee. Coffee always worked wonders.

Aderlass appeared distinctly uncomfortable when she mentioned the sorts of things Minh got up to, and she was suddenly overcome with the desire to ask him why that was. She had been telling him all about herself, after all. Well, not quite all. Rough childhood, she'd remembered him saying, ages ago. She had the terrible urge to pry.
She didn't have a chance to begin questioning, however--there was a stream of confused swearing outside the door of the apartment, and moments later the door was thrown open. And there was Asaph, staring at them in bewilderment and anger and a trace of fear. Mnem got to her feet, prepared to defend herself.
"Mnemosyne," he said, stepping into the apartment with a bit of hesitation. "What the bloody hell are you doing here?"
"Waiting for you," she replied, coolly. "Do take a seat, Asaph. We have a lot to catch up on."

He turned his attention to the door when the sound of cussing distracted both of them from their thoughts. Watching as it was thrown open a billy-goat made its way into the room looking bewildered and angry with a trace of fear. While Mnem got to her feet he remained sitting, a little tenser then before since he was ready to spring into action if needed.
“Ah, so this is the infamous Aspha. Somehow I thought that you would be . . . more.” He spoke in a bored tone, meaning only insult to the new male as well.
Eyeing the creature he noted the spades mark along with the black eight that showed his rank. He did look like a pitiful creature and he could probably use a bath. He felt sorry that Mnem had had to deal with this creature during her apprenticeship. The male sent a small shiver of distaste down his spine, “So are you guilty of being the one we have been looking for?”
