Femi tried to stop herself from feeling hurt when the upset child didn't come to her, but it didn't work as well as she would have liked. Biting her lip to keep from sniffling, she nuzzled Alphonse and put him back in his bed, tucking the covers around him in a little cocoon before standing again. She walked over to Rosemary and plopped down right next to her, grabbing the girl and scooping her into her lap. She fully expected struggles and squirming. She didn't really care just then. She could handle a few kicks to the chin. "You're Mommy's little brat, you know that?"
"Yeah, that's waaaay creepy," Thyme agreed, staring as much as her brother. "And I mean, wouldn't things have smelled that in the Wood and come to scavenge or something? It smells like rot and eww." To her sensitive canine nose, it most certainly did. Bleh. How nasty.

"Eerr..." Was all Hatter managed to say for a few moments, watching as Loreta sid down the wall and proceeded to look something between absolutely lovely, utterly terrified, and physically ill. He finally decided on doing as the woman told him and going back to the work bench.
Children would be children, they'd have a lot to say about the change... but there was honestly very little he could do. So he'd fix Doorie and tend to his Lore when she wasn't so... well, distraught. If nothing else, he'd stay up and distract her from herself. Leg or not, she made a lovely human.
Slowly clearing his thoughts of the incident at hand, he instead focused on the little prone form of Doorie sprawled on the table. The poor Mome was terribly battered and getting somewhat wiry... He needed to replace that old pelt of hers, poor love. Ah well, it would have to wait. The moment he had the screwdriver in hand, Hatter could have been a different person. Everything in the background was happily tuned out for the mechanics before him and his hands seemed to gain a life of their own.
Within a couple of seconds Doorie's pelt was off and he was unscrewing her casings, exposing a network of wires that exuded an aura of strange magic that could have rivaled a Tulgey's own weirdness.

Rosemary flailed for a few moments before giving up entirely. She flopped on her mother's arms giving her a dejected expression of utter defeat. "When I grow up, I'll win these battles." She said in response to her mom's brat comment. She was a brat, and she always would be.
Loreta glared at the people staring at her. She sat there against the wall, with no intention of moving. She wasn't going to give them a show--because as soon as she tried to walk she knew full well she was going to land flat on her face. Being lopsided the way she was wasn't going to make anything easy.
Parsley's attention switched to Hatter when he saw what the man was doing out of the corner of his eye. Ears perked he slipped behind the work table and weaseled his way to a perch among some of his father's dolls. He wanted an aerial view of someone working. He had never seen a real mechanical Corvie work on such things!
Sage eventually turned her attention to Hatter's amazing display. Sometimes she wished she was that good at things, but really she knew it would never happen. Her eyes widened at the sheer amount of wires in that little creature.
Kazifel made a slightly annoyed sound when he watched Parsley find a perch. That boy was going to get an earful later. He switched his attention to the man working on the mechanical doll. He really hoped that his tools would be good enough to fix something that complicated.

"Vanquish the evil Mommy who's just trying to protect you. I'm sure you'll manage to drive me crazy just fine." Femi held her closer and kissed the top of the small, dejected snout. Taking care of Rosemary just exhausted her sometimes. She sighed and scooted closer to Alphonse's bed to rest, where the little vampiric squirrel glared at his sister for pulling her away in the first place and squirmed over to join the pile.
Thyme spent a few more moments watching the sitting, glaring woman before her eyes followed her brother's progress. Dad was probably going to give him trouble for that later, especially if he knocked over one of the dolls. Still, she was sure it gave him a great view. Rats. She had to content herself with the a nearby low stool, hopping up and trying not to wobble it too badly as she settled in to see the human fiddling with his mechanical creature. She'd never seen anything like it. None of her father's dolls looked like that inside. Most of them were just... wood. Or painted wood. Or enchanted wood. This one looked like some sort of colorful metallic pasta inside.

Hatter's attention, for the most part, was intently wrapped up in the process of fixing Doorie. Sorting out the severed wires from the still functioning wires was the hardest part, but it passed rather quickly. The Joker did, however, notice the occasional shifting of those around him; Parsley to be exact. The boy's perch made a smile briefly tug at the corner's of his lips, he loved seeing fellow mechanical Corvies.
Within half an hour, Hatter had Doorie practically in pieces across the table and was fashioning connectors from the bits of wire he'd been able to locate, patching the breaks and then sealing the wire's casing up around it to form complete wires once again. Luckily only a couple of the cogs were damaged beyond repair and required replacements, and those that did were luckily able to be found among Kazi's work station, perfect. From there he turned to the actual shell, and the small process of applying a makeshift patch to that. While the wire's wouldn't need any additional work, he'd have to redo the patch on the casing -- not to mention the matter of repairing the current pelt -- once he returned to his lab.
Once the patches were set and he was once again completely assured of his Doorie's stability, Hatter put everything back together again. Having to rewire him like that only served to remind him that he desperately needed to give his little love an upgrade. The poor dear deserved better, especially when he was compared to some of Hatter's newest creations... Ah well, that was food for thought for another evening.
Pulling his marred coat back into place, Hatter reactivated the little Tove and set him back onto the table as he began the process of rebooting. Immediately the little Tove began to whirr and the sounds of the cogs within her beginning to spin were entirely too audible as they booted up, all further sighs of just how outdated his little pet really was. He was definitely getting an upgrade, he deserved it after everything he'd gone through here. It took a couple of minutes after he'd been switched back on for Doorie's brilliant blue eyes to light up once more and for all the whirring to fall into a barely noticeable hum.
Perfect. No sparks. Doorie was a little shaky as he pulled to his feet, but otherwise he was fine.
Slowly the mechanical Tove stretched and tilted it's head before turning to look at Hatter and let out a series of happy mechanical coos and trills. The Joker broke into a wide, somewhat silly, grin and swept his Tove up in response. "Yay~"

Rosemary stuck her tongue out at both her mother and brother. Fine, she lost the battle but she wouldn't lose the war! She pouted as she was snuggled by her mother. One. Day.
Sage was absolutely fascinated by what Hatter was doing. She had never seen anything that complicated before, and she was sure only her Daddy and Hatter had seen things like this before. She squeaked with surprise when the thing moved. She leaned forward in her father's arms to get a better look at the creature that Hatter had fixed. That was absolutely amazing!
Parsley was ecstatic from his perch as he watched the process. One day he would move to Corvistowne and do complicated things like that. Not make dolls, but work machines like this Hatter person did! He watched the thing chirp and coo up at Hatter. "Cool," he said before slipping down from his perch, nearly knocking over one of the dolls.
Kazifel shot his son a glare, before returning his sights to Hatter. He adjusted himself so Sage wouldn't fall out of his arms. "So now that you've accomplished your goals here, what do you intend to do?"
Loreta remained in the corner. She really hoped that the man didn't mean that they were going to throw the pair of them out. In this weird place she didn't want to be outside at night. She shuddered at the very thought.

Alphonse ignored the nasty look sent his way, and Femi just sighed. Then fluffed her daughter's large tail. Then licked the top of her head. "I have a tongue too, but you didn't need to see it, now did you?' she asked with a small smile. Thank heavens the girl had stopped her full-body writhing. That was just exhausting. Maybe she could distract herself with the children well enough to put aside her stress about the people in her house.
Thyme had no idea what exactly the man was doing, with all those wires everywhere and bits of metal shining underneath the fake fur. At least, she thought it was fake. Maybe not? Her brother was being kind of dumb, getting in the way, and she rolled her eyes at him expressively when he returned from his perch to the floor. Still... "What did you see that I didn't?" she whispered at him. The human woman with the stinky leg in the corner went ignored by the Highland child.
Their mother would be having fits if she were downstairs. Too bad Rose couldn't see it, though. She would've really liked to watch something like this. She probably just would've gotten in the way, though.

Hatter watched the doll teeter for a moment, intending to catch it if it started to fall. Nothing happened, however, and Kazi didn't seem too terribly upset, so Hatter simply chuckled and grinned down at the curious faerie-winged squirrel.
When Kazi spoke, Hatter swung around on the stool and set Doorie down in his lap. The Mome whirred mechanically and looked around, glittering optics taking in all the kids eagerly. Hatter gently folded his arms over the bot as he mused on the question. What did he intend to do?
He'd gotten the information he needed, vaguely, and he'd fixed Doorie. There really wasn't much left to do. Well, except avoid going out at night.
"Well, I'd say I'd be off... Except that I don't think it'd be the smartest thing to do at this hour." He grinned slightly, but sobered his expression up quickly enough. "So, I'd ask if I could stay the evening here and then leave come morning, when it'd be a bit safer for Loreta and I to travel. I wouldn't want to be a burden, though, so I could perhaps do something to repay you for keeping us?"
Hatter had numerous skills, the greatest of which were his skill with mechanical dolls and tea, but he wasn't entirely sure if Kazi or his family would be in need of them... Maybe Loreta could cook or something? She was great at that...

Rosemary pouted in her mother's arms. She had no response she could possibly make, so she resorted to glaring and pouting like the wonderful little girl she was.
Kazifel was terribly inclined to kick them out for the sake of Femi. He was already in trouble for letting them into the house, he couldn't imagine the fit she would have when he let them spend the night. Sage however tugged on her father's sleeve and whispered something in his ear.
It was a selfish request, but she rarely asked for anything. "Well, I suppose that would be a condition. Perhaps you should ask him yourself?"
Parsley raised an eyebrow as he watched his sister. She was going to kiss up. How freaking typical! Gah. Sage was absolutely unbearable most of the time, this didn't make things any better.
Loreta continued to glare from her corner of the room. She felt awful being such a burden, and with this leg... any animal could probably smell her from miles around. Things couldn't get worst.
Sage shifted in her father's arms, blushing deeply under her fur. "I.... could you make one of those for me?" She whispered out before burying her face in her father's coat.
"If you can make one of them, you're welcome the stay the night with no worry of being kicked out by my wife if that's any incentive."
