Ellen watched the curious young man's smile and gave him one in return, loving the reaction she got when she told him what he was.
"I can smell it, I can sir." She murmured, not wanting the other two to overhear. "It's a little specialty of mine, though I don't get the chance to use it often. Heh, curiosity eh? You've come to the right place the, the Master's house if full of strange things, though I wouldn't go poking around without his permission...but he is awfully fond of anything George seems to bring in...he's just got a sense for good people, so maybe he'll give you the run of a of things if you're polite."
She winked and turned back to the cart, rearing up on her hind legs and giving it a push.
"You can come and find me in the kitchens or ring for Fravell if you need anything. George dear? Make sure you and Fravell bring everything back later, alright? Thank you."
She gave them all a bob of the head and was off, hopping heavily away behind the cart.
George nodded to Conway, feeling slightly guilty.
"If you're sure, sorry about that, I hadn't expected to run into H-hatter."
He gave the other man a little smile and looked around them as Ellen left, nodding to her.
"Well, d-do you need somewhere to stay for the night? Either of you, we have rooms."

For all that Ellen had startled him greatly with her response, Hatter found himself increasingly fond of the old girl. Oh how he enjoyed the company of Rabbits on those rare occasions such as these when he had the express pleasure of their presence.
"You're a cunning one, miss Ellen. Thank you for the advice, I will most definitely have to take it into consideration." He grinned widely, eyes shining with the hungry curiosity that he simply could not explain. The master of the house, George's Master, must have been a Jack then? How interesting! Hatter was beyond intrigued at this point.
As Ellen turned to leave, Hatter tipped his hat to the Doe and smiled. "Good evening for now! It was a pleasure, however brief."
He turned his attention back upon George as the boy spoke up, still grinning widely. If the other males had been paying attention, they would have noticed the subtle change in Hatter that occurred in the Doe's presence. He calmed a little, grew more focused, but he was grinning with his usual overly excitable ADD once more.
"If I wouldn't be too much of a burden, a room for the night would be perfect. Thank you for the offer." Between comments he sipped at his tea and settled more comfortably in the seat he'd chosen.
A real Rabbit's burrow! Who would've thought!

"Don't have to apologize," Conway muttered. He shifted a bit uncomfortably as he looked down at his tea. Crap, he had completely forgotten about a place to stay the night. Now he had to bum a room off his friend or spend the night outside. No way in hell he was spending the night outside. He really did need to think ahead some of the time. It would probably reflect better on him being a friend.
A friend huh? That was a weird concept. He hadn't had any friends his entire life. Now there was suddenly someone who liked him. Then there was that weird guy in the room. Hatter. He seemed nice. Though... he seemed like a touchy-feely person.
Right but accepting the offer.
"If you don't mind me staying over night. I haven't been much of a good guest or anything," He fiddled with the teacup in his hands for a bit before taking a drink. "I don't want to be a bother."

"Yes, yes of course. There are rooms d-down the hall, once you've finished your t-tea, I'll show you both in."
He smiled, reassured for the moment that Conway was alright and that Hatter wasn't offended by the offer. They both seemed ok...Hatter seemed right at home...George briefly wondered if he had spent time around Rabbits before...
He turned back to Conway, giving him a friendly smile and shaking his head. "Of course I d-don't mind, you're not a bother at all. I would love to have you stay over."
Once Hatter had finished his tea and they had enjoyed a few more sandwiches, George led them off down the hall and down a side-burrow. Once they had walked for a few moments, they came to two oak doors, both opening into similar, comfortably small rooms equipped with beds and small fireplaces.
"The b-bathroom's that third door right down the hallway. Do either of you need anything?" He asked, hoping to bid Hatter goodnight and talk to Conway some more. It never occurred to him that his guests might slip out and roam during the night...he never would so why would they?

Once tea and sandwiches had been done away with, Hatter followed George through the Warren toward the guest bedrooms. He was fascinated by the place and was silently brimming with the hope that he would run into another rabbit while making his way from one place to another.
No luck.
He reached the bedrooms without running into another Rabbit. A pity really.
"Alright. Thank you, George. I'm sure I'm set for the evening." He gave a light tip of his hat to the other males, smiling warmly at them before slipping back a few steps into the bedroom. "Good evening, gentlemen. Sleep well!"
Humming cheerfully, he moved over to the bed and placed his hat on the nightstand before flopping back entirely. He stretched out his lean body, examining the room around him thoroughly for any signs of rabbits or interesting, hidden things. Physical rest might be nice after his long walk but, in all honesty, his mind was too awake to properly sleep.
Perhaps, after he waited a little, he could wander about and find some tea? No one could be angry at him for that. Right?

Conway let a sigh of relief escape him as he stared back down at his tea. He really didn't like tea all that much, and only took a few sips before setting it down. He was more than happy to be led to the bathroom. For once he was actually a bit tired, and found himself rubbing his eyes.
He stopped when George spoke about the bathroom and needing anything. Well, a bed was good enough for him in all honesty. He tried his hardest not to yawn before speaking and failed rather miserably. Oh well. "I should be fine. Thank you for having me over and let me stay the night. I'm not sure what I would have done if you hadn't let me stay."
Conway never did plan anything. He waited for a moment to see if George wanted anything before going into the bedroom. Maybe he would get a good night's sleep? No... he probably wouldn't.

George nodded and dipped his head to the more colorful Card as he slipped into his own room. "Good night, Hatter. I'll make sure Ellen b-brings you some tea at around nine." Hatter had a nice smile....he may not have known the man long but...he liked his smile...it made him feel safe... The smile reached his eyes and there wasn't anything held back...Hatter...maybe he would come back someday...
He turned back to Conway with a shrug and a genial smile. "No p-problem... I would encourage you to come b-back more often, b-but I'm sure you have places to be."
He watched his friend yawn and backed up a little, preparing to leave. "You're welcome here any time, no matter what the reason, you know... I'll see you t-tomorrow...would you prefer Ellen b-bring you coffee at nine? I couldn't help b-but notice that you didn't seem to fond of the tea."
Once he had received his answer, he would give his friend a quick head dip and then turn to trot off to the previous room to collect the tea cart and wheel it back to the kitchens.

The front door to the burrow opened again at around three in the morning. It creaked softly and the sound and smell of rain drifted in from beyond. A tall figure stooped through the opening, then stood fully, shaking it's head a little to clear off the clinging droplets of water.
Its movements were silent as it swept toward the kitchens...

Hatter was not a sound sleeper, not unless he had someone there to sleep with him and especially not when he was in a strange house or, even worse, a strange Warren. As it was, Hatter was being eaten alive by his own curiousity and he didn't have Doorie here with him to do his spy work for him. The male slowly sat up in bed, a noise alerting him to something else moving in the burrow, and fidgeted quietly.
It was times like these when he envied Peaches for her CeilingCat greatness... Lacking said greatness, Hatter would just have to soothe his curiousity in typical Hatter style.
The Joker climbed casually off the bed, placed his hat on his head, and strolled out of the room as if he wasn't sneaking around at all. Which, of course, meant he had made plenty of noise on the way out. There was an art to pretending you weren't sneaking, which involved being generally careless and pretending you were just stupid and friendly. It worked most of the time and Hatter did have Ellen's invitation to come into the kitchens for tea.
So what if it was 3am? He hadn't slept much yet and he really could use some tea.

Coffee seemed like a generally good idea for the morning. He agreed with George about that point before making his way to bed. Of course, being his typical paranoid self he didn't really sleep much of the night. Tossing and turning was occupying his body as he wondered about how horrible the coming months were going to bed, and how much June was missing him.
And that it was all his fault.
With that frustrating thought he decided that staring a the ceiling would be better than trying to fake sleep. He wasn't sure what time it was, but the shutting of Hatter's door made him jump. Conway sat up with an eyebrow raised in a questioning manner.
He was too curious not to investigate. Holding his spine he slipped out of his room silently. Hatter probably wouldn't notice him, judging that his back was turned and he seemed to be on a direct path do the kitchen.
Conway would definitely linger far enough away that Hatter wouldn't notice him, and listening in to see what he was doing in the kitchen wouldn't be a problem, would it?
