The rabbit sighed and rolled her eyes. Sometimes she couldn't tell if he was lying, but at this point she was fairly sure that he was at least telling a bit of a white lie. Shaking her head she stood on her hide legs and brought her front paws to he cheeks. "My goodness, you're such a handful. No wonder Mom lectures your ears off."
She stuck her tongue before she returned to all fours and hopped to the door. "But we can totally go swimming. We should probably get going before someone finds an excuse to stop you from having fun."
Opening the door took a moment before she hopped out. Really her brother was going to turn out a stick in the mud like Heike or something if he stressed about every little thing all the time. His job couldn't be that difficult when he did have help in the warren. And really, he couldn't be worrying about her, and Mom couldn't be running him into the ground that badly.

Shelby sighed. This was why he didn't want to bother with telling the truth...everyone thought he was lying anyway, or else they thought he was a drama queen. He resisted the urge to tug on his ears and, more surprising, bit back the snarky reply he wanted to give his sister. He didn't want today to be like that. Not when, as he unfortunately knew, this could be one of the last times they got the chance to spend time together like this.
He hopped after her to the door, tail wiggling as he forced himself to take calming breaths. Today would be fun. He'd -make- it fun. So there. "They should be leaving me alone for at least a few minutes," the Leveret said with a shrug, not sure if his sister had meant the comment seriously anyway. He followed as she moved towards the door, finding himself cheering up as he got closer to the outside.

She remained quiet when it came to sarcastic remarks when they walked through the warren. Everyone was probably busy doing what they were supposed to while they went out to have some forced fun.
The young Doe sighed when she made it to the door, pushing it open as she waited for her brother to get the rather small basket. "So is there anything else you want to do besides swimming... I don't have a time line when i need to be back, but I'm sure you do. Unless you did manage to convince someone to take your crazy workload."
Not like he could really work his way up in the warren. Considering he was going to be traded off, he was simply "learning how to be a proper leveret" like she was learning how to be a proper Doe. Dad didn't treat them special when it came to tasks... not like she had anything really difficult to do.

Shelby slid the basket carefully over his neck, a little trick that still kept his paws and mouth free but still allowed him to carry something. It wasn't very heavy or anything, though the smell of food so close to his nose made his mouth water. Licking his lips, he glanced up as his sister. "Besides eating you mean? Well..." He paused, thinking. It felt like it had been forever since he and Fleur made some downtime like this. It was making things just a bit awkward. Only if you let it, he told himself sternly.
"We could go search for berries down in the thicket for dessert." He remembered when the two of them had first discovered the patch, years ago. Fleur had actually been the one to stumble on it -- almost literally. Her Selkie fluffs had wanted trimming at the time. But the sweet blackberries had made up for it.
Of course, it was then that he registered the second part of her sentence. "...ah, yeah, I need to be back before dinner. I need to help serve it." And he had a few other chores to do today that if he didn't do them before then, he'd probably be up late tonight. But that was all right.

"Oh! That would be fun!" She stated shortly after he announced the idea of picking berries. She didn't know when the last time she had managed to do something like that. Most of the time she was stuck being "proper" and that was hardly a proper thing to do.
Especially if they picked berries and made a mess of it like when they were really young. She almost giggled at the thought. Surely her brother wouldn't appreciate getting that dirty. But maybe she could get creative while his back was turned and doodle something on his back in berry juice.
She would have to try something.
A brief frown made it's way on to the rabbit's face. "They can't even give you the night off? You're already pretty good at cooking. What next, are you going to do accounting?" Soon her brother would be learning the affairs of Jacks.

Shelby's ears perked right up and he smiled as Fleur seemed to warm up to the ideaof picking berries. It had just been the first thing to come to mind, but he was relieved that it had gone over well. At least they had several things to do now, and that would hopefully keep anything from becoming awkward. Because it shouldn't be. He continued walking toward the lake, being a little more careful than normal so he didn't spill whatever was in the basket. He had good reflexes now that he'd had so many years to practice doing everything with only paws and only getting one shot most times.
But at his sister's indignation on his behalf, he had to give a bitter little laugh. "I'm a Leveret. We don't get days off." They were at their spot by the lake...the same spot where Fleur had to sit when she hurt her leg all those many years ago, or at least close to the same spot. He shrugged the basket off his neck and began to spread out the blanket, tossing it with his mouth and then arranging with his paws.

Fleur took note of where they were. It was almost the exact same place where she had taken her spill. Of course if she hadn't made it than she probably would have made it at some other point. The feathering at the back of her feet had always caused her trouble and if she let it grow out she highly doubted any of the grace she had managed to acquire would last longer than five minutes.
"But you're not at a proper warren yet," she said as she eyed her brother. "So I'm sure Dad would be willing to let you have at least one night off where you don't have to do work. He's not that much of a complete and utter bastard you know. If he was he wouldn't let us out of his sight or let us associate with our mother."

Shelby began to lay out the food in the basket -- ooh, they even packed watercress sandwiches, talk about trips down memory lane -- as Fleur looked around. He was sure she recognized the spot as well. It wasn't really a day either of them would ever forget. But things had been better for Fleur after that, once she started getting her feathering trimmed and her ears pulled back on a regular basis...it had made racing against her more fair, and therefore much more fun. Not that they'd been able to run like that in a while, either, since that wasn't really 'proper'.
He paused, in the middle of setting out a loaf of bread, as Fleur reminded him about Dad and his policies. He looked up at her, quiet for a moment. "Well...I guess you have a point. I mean, if there was a good reason, I'm sure he would give me a night off." Though he knew he was a disappointment to his parents, it wasn't like they hated him. The thought of approaching the Jack was still a bit cowing, but...it would be nice to just stay out a bit later with his sister and enjoy the day without worrying about chores. Thoughtfully, he picked up a sandwich and munched, nudging one towards Fleur as well.

Fleur grinned. It was nice to know that her brother took her suggestions. She felt like less of a waste of space when someone actually listened to her. Which was rare, and really... they had no reason to listen to her.
She brushed the thought off and picked up the sandwich that her brother offered her. Watercress. How wonderfully perfect.
She missed running around like an idiot. It was far more fun than sitting around and being proper. And the thought terrified her that she wouldn't have a choice in the matter at some point. At least that's what she gathered from all of her teachings. To be proper or to be punished.
So while there was no one around....
The rabbit swallowed her sandwich, eying her brother curiously. He probably would approve of the idea of possibly doing something stupid. But he had seemed a little more stressed than usual.
"Hey, do you want to do something crazy?"

As he ate the sandwich, Shelby fancied he could almost feel the energy the food was giving back into his limbs, and his spirits rose in tandem. The idea of asking Heike for a night off to do whatever and spend what little time he had left with his sister was seeming less and less daunting by the moment. What was the worst Heike would do? Give him extra chores the next day. Or say no and still give him extra chores. But the Jack wasn't as bad as some others, some of the rumors he'd heard from the Leverets that had been owned before. Heike was really rather good about not giving out really harsh punishments.
Just as he was finishing his sandwich and coming to the conclusion of his uplifting thoughts, Fleur asked the question. He turned to regard her for a minute. A safe, meek, submissive little Leveret, like what everyone wanted him to be, would say no.
"Sure," he replied, sitting up. "Why not." They were only young once.
