Arkady had, unfortunately for the little dog, seemingly forgotten about it in favor of staring at Castiel and trying not to notice how utterly pretty she was. If he noticed that then he'd never manage to say anything else coherent, and certainly nothing very intelligent to bring up in front of Conall, who he had not forgotten was right there. His mind raced, trying to make the candles seem important in some way. He had to not look like an idiot. That was a pretty sad motivation to have, but Ark didn't really reflect on it.
"Yeah, they are rather nice," he said, tail wagging hopefully. "They're scented, you know. Any sort of scent you can think of, they have. Except for cinnamon, despite the fact that the store smells of it." That was still sort of a mystery he wanted to solve, finding out where that smell was exactly coming from. Of course, his thoughts were interrupted by something licking his foot, and he turned in surprise to see the little dog again. Oh, right! He smiled in apology and went back to scratching behind the little dog's ears with both front paws.

Castiel tilted her head to the side with a curious expression. So they hadn't found the source of the cinnamon smell? That was actually interesting. If they were burning incense then they would be able to tell from the faint smell of smoke, but they clearly weren't. "We can look around for the source of the smell, it's... kind of weird that it isn't a candle and yet it's permeating the entire store."Conall honestly didn't think it was that big of the deal. There were magical scents. He personally wanted to get one so he didn't smell awful all the time, so it was possible that the owners had a magical scent or something. It was a weird choice for a shop smell... maybe if a person smelled like it faintly he could understand. "Would it be rude to ask the woman at the desk about it?"The girl looked surprised by the suggestion before she gave a slight shrug . "I... don't know. I just think it would be more satisfying to find the answer."The little canine's tail wagged happy when the coyote started to pay attention to him again. He did his best to try and lick the boy's paws, but couldn't crane his neck properly. Either way the little dog was happy. (( OOC: Hey Lucca, would you like to do a time skip for when after the contest? Since Castiel wants to help Conall remember things, and wants to drag Arkady along with her. ))

A good mystery! That sounded like just the thing to make their little excursion exciting without causing any true danger. Not that he expected much of anything bad to happen in a little store in the Highlands anyway, but after the few days they'd had, they could never be too careful, the pup figured. Perhaps that made him overly paranoid, but he didn't care as long as no further harm befell Castiel.
Arkady was about to offer the service of his nose, to sniff the smell out a little better (for her, he was sure he could do it, despite the other distracting smells around the store), when Conall suggested something more intelligent. Arkady lowered his head a little, pretending to look at the little dog he was petting. "That's a good idea, Con," he said, tail giving a few hesitant wags. "Let's ask her." He looked up again, a grin on his muzzle, and gave the little dog a few more pats on the head.
((sure, that'd be fine! Sorry it took me so long to get back to this topic! I usually only make it as far as the Capital before getting distracted, sadly. =_= Feel free to poke me on AIM for posts anytime.))

Only briefly did Castiel look disappointed by being overturned. She couldn't always get her way, she looked from Arkady to Conall. "So, since you suggested it, do you want to ask her?" She knew the answer to the question, but she wanted to see how Conall would react. Maybe this way he'd back out of asking and they could investigate? It was worth a shot.
The boy's discomfort was evident when the question was asked. He gave a small shrug as he brushed a bit of his straggly hair out of his face. "I'd rather not, but I'll do it," he eyed the small canine as he spoke, not really wanting to make eye contact. Great, he was going to have ti embarrass himself in front of the store clerk.
"I'll do it," she said in a chipper voice as she made her way to the front of the store. The puppy followed the three of them cheerfully bouncing behind them as they walked. The woman at the front of the store looked surprised when Castiel approached and asked her the question about the source of the smell.
"I actually have no idea, I'm just the hired help," She said after a moments hesitation. "I think it might be some sort of special incense."

The look of sadness that briefly flickered across Castiel's sweet face made Arkady regret siding with Conall. But, then again, Cards didn't always want what was best for them, right? So sometimes, it was better to deny them what they wanted to give them what they needed? The little reassurance didn't entirely assuage the feelings of guilt as Ark followed the other two toward the counter. He knew they didn't really want -him- to ask the woman anything. He was rather bad with words, and with strangers as well. Cas was friendly, though, and probably best for that little job.
He blinked curiously at the answer. "Incense?" Hadn't Conall suggested that earlier as a possibility, too? That was probably what it was, then. He felt like he should say something else, something that would show the woman they were grateful for her time. "It smells nice," he offered, and frowned when that didn't sound quite right.

So Conall was potentially right. Potentially. There wasn't a satisfactory answer with the way the woman was talking. It was a shame the owners weren't around. Castiel's eyes wandered over to Arkady as he spoke. It did smell nice, but that didn't solve what the smell actually was. She wanted to know where it came from, and they could potentially find some and put in the palace or something.
Conall was slowly scanning the room. If it were increase it was possible they would have a bit of smoke to go with it. They hadn't been in this part of the store extensively, though it could easily be in the back where they couldn't go. His ears twitched with Arkady's words, hoping that maybe the "hired help" would have something useful to say so Castiel wouldn't look so antsy. He didn't want to tear through the store in hopes of finding the mysterious scent.
"Yes it is a lovely smell," The woman said in a rather airy fashion, "I think they might sell some incense in that part of the store." She motioned towards an area in the back where they hadn't investigated.
"Thank you," Castiel said with a slight bow and cheery smile. She went straight for the airy motioning for the boys to follow her. It was a little more cluttered than the rest of the store, and the scent was definitely stronger. "See anything?"

Well, at least the woman seemed to think his compliment was nice! That, Arkady thought as he saw the airy way she replied, or else the fumes from the incense were a bit stronger than even the lingering scent of cinnamon would indicate. He nodded to her and then followed Cas into the back. Sure enough, the smell got even stronger as they made it into the more crowded area, to the point where Arkady had to turn his head and sneeze as his sensitive Coyote nose got a bit overwhelmed. His ears twitched at Castiel's question, and he tried to avoid the burning in his nose as he turned to survey the clutter.
He saw a lot of things. But was any of it helpful? That was the better question. The thing to keep an eye our for, if they were looking for actively burning incense, was smoke. Ark pushed a few prints of some still life paintings aside to get a better look. Was that it? Over there? He pointed with a paw at what seemed to be a smoky area near one of the shelves, and trotted over towards it.

Conall was slowly finding that the smell was starting to burn. He wrinkled his nose in discomfort. He didn't have the best sense of smell, but it was quite clear that it was around here. Arkady was sneezing and seemed to actually be on the trail.
He looked around at some of the clutter. None of it even looked remotely useful.
Castiel had found a regular package of incense. Unburned which didn't help. She paused in her search when she noticed that Arkady was trotting towards what seemed to be a fine line of smoke.
And he found the source of the incense in a small pot that was half hiding behind a worn painting of someone's garden. The cone was already burned half way, though the decorative bowl seemed to have the scent written on it, along with what may have been a brand name.
Conall kept his distance while Castiel edged closer. She waved the package she found, "Do they match that incense?"

As the smoke got thicker and Arkady's eyes began to burn and water from the strength of it, he tried to hold his breath and stop himself from sneezing again. Squinting out through burning vision, and with the strong taste of cinnamon in his mouth despite his keeping it mostly closed, Ark knew he'd found the source even before he managed to get a watery glimpse of the half-burned cone. He inhaled to try and call out to the others, to try and answer Castiel's question, assuming he could get his burning eyes to read the brand, but it ended with a minor coughing fit.
He waved a paw to try and stave off the others worrying for his safety while the coughing completely overwhelmed him for a moment. His head swam and his vision went blurry as he struggled to breathe, but finally he managed to get a breath of clean air by ducking his head, and he turned to look up at Cas, forcing a smile. "Sorry about that," he managed, voice a bit raspy. "Very strong stuff." He glanced at the package she was holding, seeing it clearly for the first time, and nodded. The same brand. It had to be.
