Maeve was glad Shelby had taken the knife. Practicality and a strong desire to live were very important right now; consequences could wait for later.
Maeve tilted her head to listen; she hadn't given much thought of their other companions, until Shelby spoke up--the shrieks and mournful wails were white noise, and she had been ignoring the cacophony to the best of her ability--but now that she was actively listening, she was...mildly worried, but silence would have worried her more, honestly. The doe was shrieking again--everything must be fine.
"We can," she shrugged, "We still need to check the leverets' wing, though." Maeve had a vague notion forming in her mind, if they could find the kitchen; her tail twitched. "I suppose it wouldn't hurt to check in," she added after a moment, "If they haven't found anything, they can come to the other wing with us."
Maeve exited the room, and followed the noise.

Nothing under the rug, except dust, of course. And he had the oddest sensation in his paw for a moment, but he blamed it on using the letter opener to lift something. That would dull the blade even more, and he grimaced. Oops, that was stupid of him, to be sure. Shelby had the oddest feeling of guilt, like he should be apologizing to...his newfound weapon? Its previous owner? (No doubt the Jack). Neither made sense, so he tried to push the feeling down. He lifted his head at Maeve's answer, nose twitching.
The screams seemed to be getting even worse, and Shelby was suddenly half tempted to revoke his suggestion. What if something serious had happened? He glanced at the dagger in his paw out of the corner of his eye. Could he really ever use it to defend himself? Fear and doubt danced about his mind, playing with his sense, and he swallowed. "Y-yeah. Couldn't h-hurt," he replied, trying a tremulous smile. But what if it DID hurt? Shivering lightly, the little Leveret followed Maeve out of the room and towards the source of the screaming.

Maeve had been fully prepared to give the hysteric doe another piece of her mind--and perhaps force some sort of sedative down the offending throat, if only for a moment's silence--and was certainly not expecting the scene unfolding outside the Does' burrow. She froze, quivering with shock.
"First rabbit," Maeve wheezed, "What..."
Bile rose in the back of her throat. Blood, and worse, had sprayed the walls and floor in crimson globs. It looked as if something had burst out of the poor little leveret, and her eyes were inevitably drawn to the newest member of their party--a doe, exotic, and matted in blood. Was she responsible for what had happened? What had happened? White Rabbit...
The other leveret, the highlander, looked in shock. Maeve felt rather kindred.
"What--" She cleared her throat, tried again, "What happened?"
The situation had just become much, much worse, and Maeve was terrified.

The smell assaulted Shelby before they even entered the other room, and he balked at it, feeling his stomach protest immediately. Had the smell been quite that bad before, or had it somehow become worse while he and Maeve were in the study? Switching his grip on the letter opener to both trembling paws (he was sure he would drop it otherwise) the Rabbit forced himself to continue, even after he heard Maeve's exclamation; he kept hop-shuffling forward as best he could on only his hind paws.
He looked into the room over her shoulder...and instantly wished he hadn't. Shelby's eyes widened to the size of saucers and he made a high pitched, terrified noise that most Rabbits only let out when dying. He'd never seen so much blood in all his life...the new face among the crowd didn't even register at first...all he could see was red. He stood frozen in shock, and the makeshift weapon clattered to the ground from suddenly nerveless paws. If it were possible for Shelby to vomit, he would have in that moment.
For the Leveret who was outright scared of even minor cuts, the sight and the smell of even a small amount of blood making him feel faint, this was worse than any nightmare.

((Yasmin's body suddenly shuddered, causing her to trip as she swelled horribly and drastically, everything pulsing and twisting as something inside of her felt like it was beginning to split.
Brighid also began to swell more ominously. Something feels wrong about her...an awful smell...like something magical, highly magical, and she begins to feel painfully disgusting...and the hiccups are starting. The corpse of her daughter slowly begins to shrivel into dust before her eyes.
The Doe corpses in the other room are giving off a foul odor and a horrible, horrible feeling...like something...watching them or like something awful stalking them from the portal into which they were unceremoniously...and freshly stuffed...
And...from the Leverets' wing...there is...the smell...of...baking...))

Alicia's mental state was tenuous at best, and the realization that she was confronted by the shredded body of a leveret, a blood-soaked doe and Shelby's unnaturally horrible scream was almost enough to send her swooning again. No. She had to be strong. That little Selkie looked at least as bad as she felt; worse; and it was always a bad sign when a rabbit made that noise. She had to do, well, something. Her movements seemed overly hesitant and jerky, the hip-swaying doe-like walk she usually tried to cultivate was totally forgotten, but she made it to Shelby somehow and put a paw around his shoulders. "L-let's go, um, search the leveret's quarters." Or do anything, or go anywhere, just not being here and seeing what was probably about to happen to the two very uncomfortable looking does in the hallway. He hadn't witnessed the new doe's arrival, but she had a very dreadful hunch about how this was going to progress, and didn't like the idea one bit.
She wasn't sure how she'd bear the sight of another dead doe. It was like seeing her dreams dieing. Perishing cruelly and horribly, crying out and writhing in agonizing pain...! She closed her eyes and panted for a moment.
Right. Somewhere else. She started to hop away from the gruesome sight of Jala's shriveling body and toward the strangely comforting smell of baking. Hopefully Shelby would come with her; Alicia didn't really fancy the idea of being alone. On the other hand, the atmosphere and smells down this way didn't seem nearly so frightening. As she entered the leveret's storage area, she wondered in a disconnected sort of way if the others had even heard what she had said about dead does. At the time, it had seemed terribly important to let them know, but now that feeling was fading. Now she wanted only to never speak or even think of what she had seen again.

Shelby continued to stare at the blood and what he belatedly realized was Jala's...remains. Though they seemed to be decomposing with unnatural speed. EVERYTHING about this situation was unnatural, and Shelby hated it. He wanted to find his sister and just...go back home, away from all of this. But he had no idea where he was and that was impossible. What if whatever had killed Jala got him next? What could he do? The Leveret's wildly racing thoughts were suddenly stilled by a touch on his shoulder, which made him jump a bit but when it was followed with a quiet voice...
He turned, and was very relieved to see a familiar face. Alicia. She looked shaken, her face even paler beneath her white fur than was natural, but Shelby was sure he looked no better. He tried to speak, gagged instead, swallowed, and tried again. "O-okay," he mumbled, and retrieved his only weapon before hopping after her, away from the bloody mess. He didn't even look to see if Maeve or anyone else was following, just so glad to be away from the smell of blood and death, where he could breathe easier.
And where he could smell...baking? What? Shelby's eyes narrowed in confusion. "D-do you smell that?" he asked hesitantly, not willing to put it past today that his own nose was playing tricks on him.

When no answer was immediately forthcoming, Maeve's gaze skipped over the scene, trying to deduce what exactly had occurred--how it had occurred; had the leveret touched something that caused her to meet such a bloody end? There was nothing to indicate what had caused the--explosion. Was it some unseen force causing this to happen? They couldn't fight something they couldn't see.
Maeve's skin crawled with dread.
Escaping her fears and the ghastly scene and the hysteria and the lack of answers was tempting, so tempting, though a small part of her balked at leaving the other rabbits to their fate--she might not like them, but it wasn't in her nature to be meaninglessly cruel--but what else was there to do in combating an invisible foe, besides keep moving?
"We need to keep moving," she said as way of apology, and quickly followed after Shelby and the highland leveret.

(( The Highland Leveret barely had time to register the fact that the Yarrow Doe suddenly began to split violently open, when a small black whirlwind appeared through the floor by her feet and sucked her down out of sight.
In the confusion of the exploding Yasmin, it probably won't be noticed until later, though. Yasmin's sides split horribly and she died at once, her head snapping back with enough force to dash her brains out on the tunnel wall.
The creature that crawled out...is quite a beauty to reckon with and gives the other new Doe a run for her beauty-money.)) ID: SDR (They're all messed up right now, I'll get back to you.) Name: ---- Suit: N/A Rank: Doe Gender: Female Animal: Rabbit Region: Mid-Range Dealer: Kitty Parents: Yasmine x NPC Notes: Born as a full adult with knowledge and ideas of the average 20 year-old, she is a timid thing, afraid of what could have done this to her and stolen her childhood, and of what horror she has visited upon her poor mother. She also fears the same thing happening to herself and has a rather horrible fear of pregnancy as a result. A potential Jack might have to tie her down if he wants children from her... Her wings are only large enough to let her glide about 20 feet at a time. Doe's Ability: Once per week, she can focus her attention on another Doe or a Leveret to cast a spell. She must close her eyes, take a deep breath, and hold it for several seconds. While she does, the other person is suddenly stricken with a mild form of OCD. They become extremely preoccupied with counting the first object they set eyes on when the spell kicks in for up to an hour. (( In the meantime, they'd best try to collect themselves and move onto the other areas left to explore, or they may lose track of something.))((Feel free to ignore Nako's character until she can get back on to play. <3 Then, she'll jump back in.)) ~Nathalia

While the others may not have noticed Alicia's disappearance, Shelby had been following her directly towards the Leveret's quarters when the wind suddenly took her. He let out a shrill screech and backed away from the spot she'd just been. "ALICIA! ALICIA!" he squeaked, terrified, holding his dagger up with trembling paws. Yeah, like that could do anything against wind! He heard another voice, and turned around, relieved to see Maeve standing there, at least not leaving him alone.
He was far less relieved to see the sickening sight of one of the remaining Does cracking her head on the wall as something burst out of her stomach. Shelby made a feeble, whimpering sort of noise and retched, ears pulling back and legs turning to jelly. "We have to get out of here," he squeaked in a choked voice, and turned and RAN for the Leveret's quarters with everything left in him. No way he was staying a second longer around all that death. There was something very, VERY wrong here.
