Dad had said no about a hundred and one times. He always said "Yes" to Millie though. She was one rank Higher and a bipedal, which made her all the more special. She always got what she wanted. Even if it wasn't true, the little sparrow mix was sulking. Qwin had wanted to go to the Gardens. It wasn't that far away from the Court of Spades where Daddy worked, so what was the problem of going? She knew that Yarrows didn't like men but she was curious! So she had left without telling anyone. It was a bad thing to do, and she knew it. Daddy was going to be furious, but that was his punishment for saying no to her one too many times. The little girl glided a few feet on the breeze before landing lightly on the path. There wasn't really that many people around...

Illyria wasn't sure if she had left something in the store. She had everything on her small list, but she went back in and walked the aisles, left, became worried again, and walked the aisles again. Now she was out for the third time, starting her way back home, and the worry was back. She was convinced that she had everything, but at the same time, she was equally convinced that she did not. And she didn't want Aunt to be angry with her. That always went...sour. She looked at the list again. Every item accounted for. And yet... She walked swiftly, telling herself not to go back again, looking at her list, and didn't even see the blue and white bird until she had almost smacked into her. She threw herself to the side, spilling her bag, and immediately began apologizing, even though she had avoided a collision. " Ncccccch, I'm so sorry, I'm so clumsy..."

Qwin was more than a little surprised when she looked up to see a blur of canine in front of her. An alarm chirp escaped her as she hopped backwards, watching the contents of the bag spill to the ground.
Oh dear. That was quite the mess. The little sparrow's blue eyes darted from the girl to the bag. Dad had said that she needed to be nice to people regardless of rank. And this girl wasn't all that far away from hers.... She hesitated to speak for a moment as the girl apologized for nearly running into her.
"No, no, it wasn't your fault," Qwin said as she hastily brushed her feathers down. "I wasn't looking where I was going. Let me help you."
Qwin reached down to carefully pick up the nearest object, balancing it between her wing claws. She offered it to the girl since she wasn't about to invade personal space and slip the object in the bag.

Illyria mentally cursed herself for an idiot, and gratefully accepted the item. She scrounged around for items and stuffed them back into the bag, wiping them off as she went. Did she have everything...? She double-checked her list and bag. Everything seemed to be there. Nothing mangled. Couldn't even notice she'd dropped the thing.
She gave a small sigh of relief. "Thank you," she said, too embarrassed to meet the bird's eyes. She saw her marking instead. Ah, a Ten! She had bungled even worse than she thought. She hoped this wouldn't get back to Aunt. There didn't seem to be many people around, fortunately, who could document the incident. No one Illyria recognized, anyway, and the thought made her vaguely paranoid. Did Aunt have spies?
She cursed herself again. No time to be looking about for spies. Focus on the matter at hand. "I'm wretchedly sorry about that." She dug around in the bag. Perhaps Aunt wouldn't miss a piece of fruit..."Would you like a pear?"

The girl seemed a little strange. Both of the sparrows feathery eyebrows arched upwards as she watched the girl put the objects in the bag. Apparently she didn't need any help. The bird shifted awkwardly and waited for the girl to finish.
She blinked at the second apology and the offer of a pear. "Uh... It's not a problem at all." She gave a small shrug. "I think I'll pass on the pear, but if it's not too much trouble c-could you happen to tell me what town I'm in. I'm not around here. Oh! My name is Qwin by the way!"
The bird gave a slight bow of her head in greeting. Would the girl be willing to help her? She really hoped so. "Do you want some help with the bag? It looks pretty heavy and you wouldn't have dropped it if it wasn't for me."

She was happy for the opportunity to be useful, even with something so seemingly small, because having a task made her feel less anxious. Her brain shifted from thinking of Qwin as Poor Girl I Almost Knocked Over Because I Am An Idiot to Nice Girl I'm Going to Redeem Myself By Assisting. She relaxed visibly: tense shoulders slouching; tight grimace of embarrassment loosening into something like a smile.
"This is Amaranth," she said. She hadn't been born here, and before her parents had vanished, hadn't visited often, either--her mama and Aunt had never been very close, and the visits were something more like fulfilling a family obligation rather than a personal pleasure. Her mamma had told her, with a sly smile, that she would rather Illyria spend her summer holidays doing something fun rather than something soul-killing. Mum had laughed.
She shook off the memory, and offered a couple of items from the bag, if Qwin really wanted to help. Illyria felt a little bad, but she thought the girl might take offense is she refused, and she didn't want to embarrass herself more.
"Are you lost, then? I know some of the neighboring towns, if you got sidetracked..."

The town sounded remotely familiar. She'd seen it on a map before, hadn't she? She couldn't have traveled too far, all things considered. Her tail twitched in thought as she debated on how far away she could go before her father fell into a complete and utter panic because she was missing. Actually, if she thought about it she should go back now.
That wasn't about to happen though.
She accepted what the girl had offered, balancing the objects in between her wings. This was a nice distraction from dealing with family. the sparrow looked at the girl and gave a small shrug, shifting the contents in her wings. "I don't know if it counts as being lost, since I'm not heading to a place in particular. I just wanted to see what the gardens were like. They really are as beautiful as people say they are."

Lyr felt a vague stirring of pride at the compliment to one of her home regions, though right now she would be tempted to do anything to get out of here and live somewhere else. She wondered if the girl was in want of a guide, or utterly uninterested in company.
She hoped it was the former. She didn't want to go home, even with the groceries. Perhaps she could take them home and convince her aunt that she really needed to show this girl around, that she was someone big and important. Her aunt tended to be much more amenable to her suggestions when they had company.
"Oh, well," she said, swallowing her nervousness, "if you like, I can show you around once I drop off this stuff. It's not far off. There's even...there's even a playground around here, if you like. It's very pretty."

Qwin's face lit up at the suggestion. It would be nice to have someone show her around considering how she had no idea where to go. And a playground? That would be nice for a change. She wouldn't even have to deal with Millie having her way all the time.
"I think that's a great idea!" she chirped. And then she remembered herself. She didn't want to put the cart before the horse so to speak. "I mean, that is if you aren't too busy. I don't want to impose on you."
Manners. She had to remember her manners. She had been rather rude lately and Daddy had been getting on her case. She was related to royalty, and she should at least act like it so no one in her family got in trouble later. "Thank you very much for your help." She said after a few moments.

"Oh, it's--it's not a problem at all," she said, voice a happy near-murmur. "If you wanna follow me, we can drop this stuff off and I can definitely show you around." She hoped.
She walked the girl back to her aunt's house; it was an ornate affair first erected a century and a half ago when the Gardens style of architecture had swung into the most preposterously elaborate phase imaginable, and her aunt had taken pains and spent a good deal of money making sure it remained as presentable as possible. In Lyr's humble opinion, it was dark and dreary on the inside, but she had never dared to suggest that they remedy this by, say, adding more windows. She suspected her aunt wouldn't remove a screw.
When they reached the front door, she said, "Ah, you should probably wait outside for a moment, sorry. I'll take the...things...and be back in just a moment. We've got a porch swing!"
