The bird followed with little protest, humming slightly as they went. She was a little taken aback by the house that they came to. It was far more elaborate than what she imagined houses to be. The palace she could understand, since it had been around so long and was for show. Perhaps Lyr's aunt was a high society woman?
That must have been nice. Though the house did look a bit... intimidating. Was that normal?
She almost jumped when her companion spoke. "Oh... Okay," she said with a smile as she offered the girl what she was carrying. She wanted to help her inside, but she couldn't impose when she was already being so generous. Once the girl had left she glided over to the porch swing.
She fluttered a bit awkwardly when she landed, the swing swaying in protest. She couldn't fly right with her stupid necklace on. One day she'd be graceful while wearing it.
Quietly she waited for the girl's return.

Illyria took the groceries into the kitchen, put everything quickly and neatly away, and was about to turn and look for her aunt when the woman appeared suddenly in front of her, looking displeased.
"What took you?"
"I met someone who was lost," she said, carefully. She kept her eyes down. "I was wondering if I could show her around. She's very nice." She fished around in the dark for something she thought her aunt might approve of. "She has nice jewelry, too. I won't be long."
There was a long moment of silence in which she anticipated the crisp "no." But apparently she had managed to say something that pleased her aunt, for the woman just looked at her scrutinizingly for a moment before saying "I want you back before dark. You can clean the attic in the morning to thank me."
Lyr nodded, offered vigorous verbal thank yous anyway, and made her way back out of the house as quickly as she could. She saw Qwin on the swing and smiled. "All right," she said, eager to get moving. "We're all clear. What do you want to see first?"

The bird perked instantly when the girl returned. At the question she tilted her head. "Well I think whatever happens to be the closest would work. I don't want to have you running around on my account. You've been so nice to me when you haven't really had to be."
Plenty of people had been "obligated" to treat her cordially. Dad may not have been the most powerful and compelling man, but most people still at least stopped themselves before saying something stupid. The real exception to the rule was her tutor. He was just mean to everyone.
Hopefully she was being nice enough. Actually talking to people other than her sister was difficult. She really needed to get out more, even if Daddy was going to be absolutely furious when she came back.
She probably should consider how she was going to get back. It was a bit of a trip.

She thought the playground might be the best idea all things considered, being pretty close and pretty enjoyable. She suggested to Qwin that that's where they might go, and began leading the way. She didn't consider running around all that much of an imposition. She was, in fact, stupidly grateful for the company, grateful to get out of the house. She knew objectively that she was turning Qwin's presemce into something bigger than what it was and that it was ridiculous, but it was difficult to be objective. Mostly she just felt a little desperate.
They came upon the park. It really was a beautiful place, with towering equipment of curious elegance and practically its own botanica. Most of the park wasn't meant for the play of children, clearly, but most of it was still fun. One of the best places in the Gardens for a stroll.
She tottered over to a swing. "How long are you in the Gardens, anyway?" She went red. "I mean, if you don't mind me prying."

The playground it was then! She wasn't particularly built for fooling around on most of the equipment, but there was bound to be something there that was fun. She hadn't been to too many playgrounds either. Dad was busy in the palace and she had to keep herself entertained there with her sister.
Qwin was surprised when they arrived. It was a lot prettier than she expected. "Oh wow..." she gasped as she took in the sights. Was the entire Garden filled with overly pretty things? Maybe she should try to move here when she was older if that was the case!
The question brought her back to reality. "Uh well...." She said after a moment of silence. Her face was slowly turning a bright shade of crimson. "I'm actually not supposed to be here. I imagine I should get back to the Palace soon before my father throws a fit. I'm sure my sister has already told him where I went."

She berated herself for asking the question and ruining everything, and at the same time her eyes went wide at the thought of the girl sneaking out so far from home without even telling her parents where she was going. If she tried to do something like that--if she went that far away--she was certain her aunt would find her and drag her back, and whatever followed wasn't going to be pretty. If she went away, she would have really make sure she never came back. She'd have to disappear.
She decided that Qwin was rather enormously brave, or else foolhardy. Either way, she felt a quiet but pronounced admiration.
"Well, while you're here," she said, carefully, "you should swing first! I can even push you if you want." Wings, after all, might make it difficult to grab the chains and get decent momentum going.

Qwin's bravery was more curiosity and stupidity than anything else. If she had actually thought about the situation before storming out of the palace she probably would have just hid in the garden until her father stopped being a stick in the mud.
But where was the fun in that? She couldn't stay cooped up for the rest of her life, and this was just a step in a different direction. Maybe she could justify it that way to her father? Probably not. He was going to be furious.
The little bird was taken by surprise at the other girl's statement. The swing? "You would really push me?" she asked, a light blush forming under her feathers. She did enjoy the swings the few times she had actually played on them. Being a bird and not having her bipedal form she had never been able to get the proper height that her sibling hand until her father had pushed her.
Qwin glided over to the swing, landing on the seat roughly she hooked her claws in the chains.
"Thank you so much for this!"

"Of course I would," she said, as the girl got onto the swing.
Lyr beamed happily as Qwin offered her thanks. She sat on her hind legs and used her front paws to rock the girl back and forth on the swing, occasionally making an awkward hop back when she came back too fast. It occurred to her vaguely that Qwin would have the best dismount maneuver of all. Instead of leaping onto the ground and potentially injuring herself, she could just launch herself straight into the air and fly off.
She was pleased to help someone enjoy themselves. It made her feel like she had a friend.
And made her feel acutely conscious of the fact that the girl was soon going to leave and probably never come back and Lyr would never see her again, but for the moment she felt content and she tried not to dwell on her worries.

Qwin couldn't help but giggle when she was on the swing. It wasn't something she had done often, and really she never expected to have a chance to play with someone other than her sister. She had very few friends, and as large as her extended family was different. She was forced to associate with them.
Having a choice made all the difference in the world even if it was going to end soon.
When she dismounted the sing she glided for a few feet, doing a small loop before landing on the nearby see-saw. A look of victory was on her beak. That had been a blast, something that she hoped never to forget.
"Thanks!" she said, the cheer practically oozing out of her.
She glanced at the sky behind her companion. It was getting late wasn't it? She should probably go before Dad had a fit. "I think we should do this again." She said after a moment of looking thoughtfully at the girl. "I live at the Court of Spades so I'm not that far away, and even though my Daddy is going to be furious about me leaving without his permission I'm pretty sure he's going to be thrilled that I made friend's with someone."
Hopefully the girl would want to see her again.

Lyr watched with no small measure of delight as Qwin flew off the swing, looped, and landed. She might be able to fly one day, as well, if she were ever able to attain a high enough rank.
She turned red when Qwin spoke again, but kept her smile. It was a happy sort of embarrassment, if such a thing could be said to exist. The girl wanted to keep being her friend! She had been foolish to worry. Then again, perhaps her worry was what made it possible. If she had been arrogant enough to assume that Qwin would want to keep in touch, the universe would have punished her for her presumption. It was never a good idea to get her hopes up.
"I think that would be lovely," she said, earnestly. The Court of Spades really wasn't that far away, was it? Just a little out of the region. Surely she would be allowed to make a trip.
