It was late and the world was dark and quiet, especially inside the house. Ilana had finally gotten mother to go to bed and Casanova was off somewhere with papa again, he didn't really know the details this time around ... but he didn't really mind. It was better that Nova wasn't around actually, he needed to have a little one on one time with their youngest sibling and that would have been hard with the cheerful boy around. No, there wasn't really a place for cheer tonight. The triple breed sat on the sofa and stared at the door waiting. Vesper still wasn't home yet and he was worried, just as worried as he was every time she left. He wasn't the only one who was worried, momma definitely was, but he knew the rat-eagle wouldn't be able to deal with this properly, or if anyone could, really. He just .... wanted to have a little heart to heart with her to try and figure out what happened to make her want to do these things to herself. He didn't want to see her end up really hurt or .... dead. He wouldn't be able to forgive himself if that happened and he hadn't tried anything. There was a noise at the door and his rounded little ears perked forward. Was it her?

Heh. She was still alive. Who would have thought? Regardless if she was certain she wanted to be alive or not, she was definitely still among the living. Everything hurt too much for her to have been dead. Even then, Vesper still managed to get herself back home. Only one person really came to mind along the trek. Kat. What would he think? 'Papa' was always too busy being stupidly happy with Nova to notice and 'Mom'... Well, she really hoped Mom wouldn't be the one to find her first off. Maybe she'd get an eye patch and pretend she was going through a weird pirate phase... Reaching the door, the rat-mix slumped against the surface and nudged it with her paw. Why were doors so hard to open? A bit of struggling got the latch, everything was still stiff and awkward, Vesper managed to let herself in. The rat groaned and eased the door shut... only to look up and find Brokat waiting for her. By the Rot! He wasn't supposed to be waiting! Vesper was suddenly too aware of everything -- of how she looked, of what she lacked... of the blood caking so so much of her fur. She opened her mouth but nothing managed to come out, just a strangled and uncertain whine.

The fumbling with the door was unusual and it made all of his long fur and feathers bristle, which in turn made him about twice the size he normally was. Vesper didn't generally make noises like that when she was coming back, but he resisted the urge to hide behind the arm of the couch and kept up his watch. Raanan, picking up on his lowlander's tension, stirred, cracking open an eye and making a sound that would normally be rather cute ... but took him by surprise as well and made him jump ever so slightly.
His little rat ears slid back as the door finally opened slowly ... why was everything about this door opening tonight so.... creepy? but it turned out to be Vesper but .... oh suits, what in the name of all the Queens had happened to her? Olive eyes widened as he launched himself off the couch and, awkward gate be damned, he made it to her side rather quickly. The green, striped bander made another awkward noise and then coughed his indigence to the triple breed, he hadn't wanted to be nearly knocked off the sofa! He eyes Brokat and then Vesper for a moment before hopping down and wandering off. Vesper was ok, he didn't mind if she touched his boy.
He'd never been good at keeping his emotions out of his voice and now was no exception, the concern was rather evident but it had a little dash of fear behind it as well.
V-Vesper... What ... happened?
His eyes, the same awful color as his oddly placed feathers, widened again, only this time not with fear, not the same kind anyway. He had a little inkling whatever was had been her fault initially ... but he loved his sister and he always would, no matter what.

Vesper flinched as Kat rushed her, the little rat-mix turning her head so she wouldn't have to look too deeply at his concern. If she could find no other good things about this lost eye, then this moment would be it's most useful time. Blocking Kat from her vision had never been easier so long as she kept him in her blind spot.
She attempted to smile ever so slightly, hoping to lighten the mood. She hadn't seen herself in any form of light, and she wasn't entirely sure she wanted to after Kat's reaction. "I look that bad, do I? Is it just the eye or..." Vesper trailed off, tail writhing nervously behind her. Being cheerful just wasn't working. "I don't really know what happened... A lot. But I'm alive, right?" She glared down at her paws in misery.
What had she done? She couldn't lose an eye!! It just made everything worse... so much worse.
"I just need a bath."

He hadn't noticed her lack of an eye until she tried to not look at him, which meant things were worse then she was actually telling him. He flipped his ears back and puffed himself up, his look of concern growing but it also had an added sternness that he only took on when dealing with his siblings ... he was simply to shy to use it on anyone else.
You need more then a bath ... I'm ... I'm going to wake up Momma.
Normally he would just let Vesper go and bathe and go to sleep after she told him what happened ... and he'd make sure to bring her some coffee and breakfast in the morning but not tonight ... she'd never come home looking this bad ... and Tavor might be able to make her feel better. Momma always seemed to have some sort of concoction to make them feel better ...
He couldn't keep the stern, puffed up pose long and soon deflated, looking very much like he wanted to cry but ... he wasn't going to, he refused to do it.
Why ... do you keep doing this?

When Brokat puffed up, Vesper merely kept her gaze more firmly adverted. She could sense his anger, his concern... all of it, in those few simple words... and... He was going to wake Momma.
Vesper dug her toes into the floor, gritting her teeth. What could she say?
Momma was see eventually, even if they spared him of it that night. But if they kept Tavor out of it for the night, then maybe she could clean up enough that it wouldn't look so bad.
She could almost hear Brokat deflating. His furious concern crumbling into something far harder to deal with. Had she really hurt him so much? It was her own body, she could destroy it if she wanted to... Kat wasn't supposed to suffer.
Yet, when she was forced to debate the question, Vesper really didn't have a good answer. Saying it was everyone else to blame and not her just didn't feel as proper when it was Kat she was trying to say it to.
She merely hung her head and closed her eyes despite the pain it was currently causing her. "I'm sorry, Kat."

His ears flopped down to the sides as he watched and waited for an answer. The longer she was silent and the more she avoided him ... the worse it made him feel. He wasn't all that close to Nova anymore, not since their brother had gotten ideas into his head on what he wanted ot do with his life and such and had firmly established himself as their father's shadow and Mama, there was just something off about him that Kat wasn't entirely certain what ot think of and it made him want to distance himself from the rat-eagle even though he couldn't ... Vesper was the only one that really paid him any real mind ... and yet she was the person most likely to be missing from his life entirely one day. He tried not to think about it but he couldn't ignore the thought anymore ... and it hurt. It hurt a lot, and it frightened him as well.
He moved closer and flopped his hind end down on the floor and sat up just enough to wrap his front paws around his sister in a hug, forgetting for a moment to be gentle as he buried his face into her crusty, stinky fur.
I don't want to lose you Vesper ...
There was a bit of a sniff at the end of his sentence as he tried not to let things get to him ... Nova was right, he was far to sensitive for his own good.

Vesper tensed as Brokat suddenly wrapped his paws around her, both embracing her and hiding in her fur. On most occassions she would have made a wise crack about her stench... but now she could do little more than stare in misery.
She was used to hurting herself and the ones around her, but she didn't like hurting her family... Brokat especially so. He didn't deserve her abuse, even if it was entirely indirect. A miserable sigh escaped her and slowly Vesper leaned back against her brother. "You're the only thing worth sticking around for, Kat." She slowly reopened her eyes, peering at her brother with her remaining eye. "I'll try to always come home for you, promise."
So that weird cat showing up wasn't so bad.
Living wasn't that bad, especially if her living meant that Brokat would be happier. An eye wasn't that heavy a price to pay for that one person in her life that actually made her feel good about herself.

Her words weren't terribly reassuring ... she said try, and he wasn't as dumb as their brother. Try was the nice way of saying that there was a possibility that one day she wouldn't come home, that she'd ... He couldn't take this train of thought anymore and started to sob as quietly as he could, adding his tears to whatever else was lingering in her fur as he tightened his grip on her.
Tell me what I can do to ... to keep you safe.
He curled his bushy tail around himself and took as deep a breath as he could, not wanting to be too loud ... he didn't want to wake momma up just yet.
Tell me w-what I can do... t-to keep you ... w-where.. you're safe.
He couldn't keep his little sniffles out of his sentences, nor the genuine concern and... sincerity they had. He didn't want her to go out anymore, didn't want her to hurt ... but he didn't know what to do ... Maybe, just maybe... she had an idea of something.
I'd ... do anything.

Vesper had hoped that reassurance was enough.
No Lowlander could really walk outside in the City and promise certainty of their safety. Vesper, with her foul mouth and binge drinking, was especially at risk.
"Kat... Kat, please... Don't worry so much. I'll be fine. I'm alive now, I am." An eye for her life. It rang through her head over and over again. She hadn't been alive before. But Kat didn't need to know that.
If any good had come out of this evening, it had been a bit of a reality kick. Vesper's attitude would get her killed... and that would kill Kat... and she didn't want that at all. She couldn't hurt Kat like that, after all he'd done for her. Yet she still had no clue how to answer him.
"Just... stop worrying. Please, I... I hate to see you crying, Kat." She licked his cheek quietly, frowning deeply. "It'll be okay. I just... pushed my luck today." Funny how things were so much clearer when you nearly lost everything.
