He led them to his favorite spot in the garden motioning for her to take the seat across from him. Relaxing back in his chair he soaked up the sun for a few seconds.
Smiling friendly at her he titled his head to the side. "Now that you bring it up, I was just starting to wonder wot oddity had walked into my lovely Court. Speaking from one oddity to another, that is." He motioned toward his horns pierced hat to show what he was referring too. She was a strange creature to behold, it was true though.
They were interrupted for a moment by a servant coming to deliver their coffee. He was quick to fix his up the way he liked it. Two teaspoons of sugar and a good dash of milk. Just perfect for the weather.
"Just what is it that the puffs of dust do?" He asked, curiosity clear in his tone.

Thyme's expression changed to one of ironic amusement. She'd been dealing with questions like that one ever since her unfortunate foray into the attic. People questioning her region used to make her twitch. Now it was just part and parcel with being social. "Oddity isn't exactly a bad choice of words. I'm a pure Highlander, believe it or not."
She settled into her seat, keeping half an eye on Waffles. With the opportunity to investigate the garden, she was sure he'd take advantage of it. Hopefully he would be enough of a mama's boy to stay close, though. He was still pretty young. When the coffee came, she took a sniff. Whooboy, quality stuff right there. A spoon of sugar was all she needed to make it more palatable.
"They act as a sort of sleeping powder, though nobody's ever had enough of it to actually fall asleep. I'm not sure how much it would take. Normally, it just leaves anyone who comes into contact with it dizzy and disoriented for about five minutes. You'll probably get a kick out of watching Waffles weave around for a while. He's prone to tripping, for obvious reasons, and it's really quite cute."
Would he ask more about the oddity, or let it be? She was curious.

He silently considered that for a moment as he took a sip from his coffee. She was a full Highlander? From looks alone he had not guess it. Considering that though, she really did remind him vaguely of someone. Not focusing on anything in particular he said in a light conversational tone, "I have a nephew who has a set of pink feelers and a pair of oriental wings. Got them from a vial that he was probably better off not drinking from. Strangest little creature." He shook his head giving a chuckle.
Looking to her across the table, he gave a smile. He was interested to learn more about the strangeness that had befallen her but at the moment he was not one to pry.
"So, you are seeking a position here at the Court of Clubs. Just wot is it that I can do for you?"

Mages really had issues with leaving magical artifacts laying around, or getting lost, or however they got into the hands of ordinary people. Hopefully she would be more responsible with her magics as she got better with them. "A vial? That makes a lot of sense. My mother drank a concoction made for her by a mage acquaintance while she was pregnant and it gave my siblings some pretty strange mutations, so I understand. Although we still don't know where the vampire bat came from." Stupid Alphonse. The childish part of her couldn't help but think it.
She sipped at the coffee, eyes going half-lidded for a moment as she enjoyed it. Her aunt tended to keep better quality teas than coffees, since most of her guests preferred it and it was generally considered to be the Highland drink of choice. This stuff was fantastic.
The cup went back on the table with a very deliberate, careful gesture. "Well, Your Majesty, my rank speaks for the position that I'm interested in. I've been debating whether or not to join the Court for several years now, and finally decided that it might be a good idea, at least for a span of several years. My specialty lies in magic. You might call me a mage-in-training. I'm also good at a variety of other things, of course. If my aunt attempted to drill one thing into my head during my stay in the Highlands, it was manners. If I didn't know how to be social, I wouldn't be here today."

He gave another light chuckle to himself as he took a few sips from his own coffee. Considering how she had turned out from such affects it would definitely be something to see the rest of her siblings. At this time of day he preferred to nurse it, letting it cool off bit by bit, so that he could consume the coffee in a few big gulps rather than with tiny sips and burns. Though gulping anything while in formal company was not all that well mannered. More's the pity.
"That would mean that you are seeking a position as a titled King." He started stating the oblivious. "Since you have come for a meeting with me, I would assume that you are aiming to take my last available spot. Are you sure that you would want to work under someone like me?" His tone was half serious half teasing.

"You assume correctly, Your Majesty," she agreed, absently fiddling with the spoon sitting next to her cup. When she realized what she was doing, she quickly left it alone. Gah. Her aunt would have given her a metaphorical bitch slap for that one. She could hear it now, and in the old wolf's voice. You're in the presence of royalty, girl! Don't make a fool out of yourself and fiddle with things like a three-year-old.
He distracted her from her mild self-recrimination over something trivial with his question. One eyebrow rose. "I assure you that if I can survive my mother's care for fourteen years, I can survive anything. The Tulgey was not an especially forgiving home, although, ironically, the Highlands scarred me more. If you can count the green fur and feelers as 'scarring'. I have a few eccentricities of my own, including an unusual sister who likes to pop in wherever I happen to be staying and cause havoc. The fun kind, of course."
...she was just getting more and more off-topic, wasn't she?

While listening to her he continued to drink from his cup. He would need a refill soon. At her small mentions of her family members he lofted an eyebrow. They sounded almost as . . . interesting as the first litter Whip and him had had. All nine of those children together had definitely been something of a trial and chaos. It still amazed some of the chaos and trouble those small beings had been able to get into and cause.
Chuckling in amusement, he placed his cup down after she had finished. "I am curious, just wot is it that has brought one such as yourself" - not to imply that anything was wrong with her - "to the Court of Clubs in search of a position among the title?"
He was interested to see just what it was that had driven her for such a goal. People came for many different reasons, and as he had found himself, over time they changed. Some were reasons enough in their own right to earn a place on his list while others he had found lacked the true meaning behind the honor it heldand had been sent away.

Hmm. That was an interestingly-worded question. The tips of her long nails tapped against the side of her ceramic coffee mug three times in succession, front to back, as she debated an answer. How frank should she be? This had turned into a relaxed enough conversation, but he was still the Queen of Clubs, and he was still interviewing her for the last King spot he had open. He could afford to be picky.
"There are a few reasons, Your Majesty. The Courts hadn't always been an option in my mind when I was younger. My caretaker, a Miss Josephine e'Devya, did not have the higest opinion of titled nobility. I believe she had a bad experience with a former Queen of Clubs, though I'm not sure which or why." Oh, she could speculate, but she hadn't been able to prove anything. Yet. Maybe there was still a noble creaking around the palace who could help clue her in. "To be quite honest, the thought of free access to your library initially sparked my interest, and I don't mind serving my suit to get it. I feel that I'm reasonably capable, and I have a lot to offer the Court."
Neutral and acceptable enough, while ending on a positive note. That was how interviews were supposed to go, wasn't it?

The mouse gave a thought "hmm", sipping from his coffee, as he listened to her explanation. At her comment about her caretaker not caring for the titled court members he simply raised an eyebrow but said nothing otherwise about it.
"So you like books?" He asked while one ear twitched ever so slightly. While he, himself, never really had such an interest in them he would not deny that there were others who found a passion in them.
And while books were all lovely and good he found himself wondering if there was anything else that she would be able to bring to his Court. Not that he was not already tempted to offer the remaining slot as one of his Kings.
"I think we need just one more thing before I can make my decision. While I can, and do, appreciate everything that each person brings to this Court - for it is only together that we can stand. It is thus that I find myself wondering just wot it is that you are capable and have to offer?"

"I'm very fond of books, yes," Thyme agreed with a small smile, running one claw along the edge of her coffee cup. "Although I prefer applying what I learn from them to the actual research. It's more satisfying to do something with the knowledge once I have it."
His question made her smile fall into a more thoughtful half-frown. The Queen's question made a good deal of sense. If he was going to utilize the people under him to fullest capacity, he would need to know precisely what they were capable of. Knowing your resources before you made use of them... yes, that was an astute question. What exactly should she reveal?
"Well, Your Majesty," she began slowly, leaning back, "I have a small but varied repertoire of magical abilities under my belt, and I am constantly looking to learn more. I would consider myself educated, and I have some measure of practical experience with... interrogation. I prefer to avoid violence when possible, of course. I also have a few random and potentially trivial tricks to amuse or embarrass, depending on the occasion. What else would you like to know? Are there any tasks or areas in particular that the Court needs assistance with?"
She wasn't going to talk about her sword, at least not yet. A non-Heart with a summoned weapon was an impossibility and she preferred to hold the knowledge of Gred close to her chest unless pressed.
