At that, Zuberi was genuinely baffled. Her pace slowed, and she turned to look at him. He was... a leveret? She didn't even know what that meant. Jack and Doe made sense.... male and female.. but what was a leveret? He looked relatively male to her.
"You mean.. you can't.." She had nearly resorted to using hand gestures, but quickly stopped herself from resorting to that. Even while it confused her, it made sense on some level. maybe it was something along the lines of how aces could only procreate amongst themselves? Even then that logic didn't quite make sense. He had specifically mentioned that he could not have children. So.. he was sterile? He had nothing to perform the task at all? She'd heard of neuter creatures before, but that was generally due to some sort of ritualistic mutilation and not a breed trait.
"Me? I'm fertile!" She chittered bewilderdly, and in the second it took to say it, she immediately realized she may have misconstrued the question. "Ah.. no. No kids."

Enzili chuckled a little, looking a tad uneasy. Well, that definitely answered some of his unspoken questions... not that it really made him feel all that much better. She didn't know anything about Leverets? That made conversation far more awkward, really.
"Yeah, Leverets can't. We just aren't made for it, none of the right hormones or anything." The mention of fertile brought a prompt nod to his head. "Yeah, that's it... Sterile. Until a male becomes a Jack or a girl becomes a Doe..." The little rabbit puffed up firmly. "I'll become a Jack someday, they're the elite. Top of the line... But I won't be a jerk like the rest of the gentlemen."
He paused from his little tirade and shuffled his paws in embarrassment. Had he really gone off about that? What would she think? He still had no clue how a Card would react to these little tidbits but he knew for a fact that no Jack would approve.
"Uhm, er... ...Are all Cards fertile?" That made a lot of sense... Explained why there were so bloody many of them, at very least.

Now, -that- was peculiar. Leverets were sterile, until they became Does or Jacks. She didn't necessarily know what a Doe or a Jack was, but she assumed it was some sort of higher rank, making some sort of subconscious connection between this transcendence to a Card getting their biped or human form.
Jacks were jerks? Perhaps all that 'eliteness' went to their head. She grinned a bit at his tenacity. She figured that getting human form went to the heads of Cards as well.
"Cards? Yeah, pretty much. Aces can only breed with other Aces though. The scholars suppose there's something wrong with them. They don't have any magic... and I've never met one that could change forms. We breed across regions and even Suits... One of my uncles married a diamond not long ago... classy stuff. Most of my village are good ol' clubs." She gestured to her chest proudly, pausing to step over a log. The sound of running water was getting stronger. "Leverets are really different from Aces though.. if only by the fact that Aces are aces for life."
From the bushes, a startled deer bolted at their presences, probably never having seen the likes of a card in its life. Just behind those bushes though, was a spring that flowed straight from the ground. Zuberi knelt beside the cool, flowing water and dipped her hand into it, bringing up the webbed appendage in an effective bowl to first sniff, then drink the water. "The animals think it be safe; it smells fine and tastes fine to me, I reckon it be alright!"

Aces... Suits...? All these things were pretty much new to him. He had a few hints of what was what through having to superficially interact with a couple on runs to the market -- their suit was the number and shape on their chest... And he was pretty certain now that a club was the symbol Zub had and that diamonds must be fancy if they had fancy ceremonies... but Aces?
"Aces? They do sound sort of like Leverets, but you're right... Not all Leverets are Leverets for life, though a lot of 'em choose tah be." He wiggled his little tail a bit. He would've been one of those who would happily choose the carefree life of a Leveret... except that finding a place to live and thrive without a Jack was a pain in the tail and when he did get a Jack they all wanted a Doe out of him because of his pretty mane. Guh!
When at last they happened upon the spring, Zili's ears perked up entirely and he let out a cheerful little squeak. Finally! Hopping up to Zub's side the little rabbit cupped his forepaws and proceeded to follow the squirrel's example. Ahhh, how he'd missed water!

When she'd received her fill, Zuberi leaned back against one of the great palm trees that lined the spring, sighing lightly as she allowed herself to relax. The trek hadn't been any more grueling than the walks she'd take in the mainland, but the strain of being exposed to the elements in the sea and in the sun had taken its toll on her. She wasn't surprised if she'd gotten heatstroke from being unconscious on the shore. On that note, she allowed her gaze to slide over to the bunny who was still drinking heartily from the fresh water. Perhaps all of this was a hallucination, and she was still passed out on the beach?
She chuckled at the thought. "It's all very hard to believe still.. that rabbits be real. Then again, I've found out that stranger t'ings existed, I suppose."

Enzili greedily gulped down his fill, his little tail wagging behind him as drank. You never really realized just how thirsty you were until you started drinking. He had to be careful, though, to avoid going the opposite direction and drinking himself to death. Guh.
After a couple more gulps, the rabbit pulled back and flopped down on his rear beside Zuberi. Cards really weren't all that bad if they were all like this one... Though they probably weren't, or Rabbits and Cards would get along a whole lot more.
Zuberi's chuckle brought his attention back to the squirrel and off of his musing, was it that hard to believe? He supposed he could see that, though... It wasn't hard to believe in Cards, they were everywhere, but Rabbits did make an awful lot of fuss about not getting caught by the common Card. "Yeah, that's the way we intend it to be." He chuckled a little, his mischevious rabbit pride showing through, but was quickly fascinated by what she went on to announce. "Oh? Like what?"

The way it was intended to be, but this particular rabbit wasn't particularly good at not being seen. Zuberi kept that to herself though; there was no need in causing confrontation. After all, the little guy seemed so proud of his heritage. Zuberi could understand that.
The corner of her mouth twitched at the question into something of a half smile. "Oh, I don' want te bother ya with such stories. Most sane creatures don't believe me when I tell them anyways." Then she laughed, more to herself than anything. "They'd think me all the crazier if I told them I'd spoken to a rabbit! Ya see, most Cards don't even believe you exist. Until today.. I didn't think rabbits existed... until today. Ah.. but I be doting on it. Ya can't blame me though can ye?"
The leveret's expression didn't seem to become any less expectant, and her deflecting smile turned into a more thoughtful expression. "Do ye believe in ghosts, Enzili?

The leveret laughed heartily when Zub announced that most didn't believe in him. "Well dat's da point yanno? We do what we can to slip under da radar of most cards, dressin' up or playin' tricks on 'em... Usually Cards can be rather pesky... but you're not bad at all, and I've talked to a couple of 'em in disguise that weren't awful either." Enzili chuckled again, and rolled his shoulders slightly.
Of course he couldn't blame her, myths discovered were a fascinating thing and, honestly, he was still rather pumped about meeting a Card sans-disguise.
And then there was that 'stranger things' comment and that hard him really intrigued. Especially with her answer. Ghosts? "Well, sort of... I ain't never seen one personally, but I like da old stories. My nana used to tell me all sorts of stories when I was a babe, even some of the card tales!"

They certainly were... malicious little bastards, weren't they? It didn't surprise her; after all, this leveret had stolen her boat with little consideration toward whomever might have owned it; and she felt it was probably because she was a card. Still, it wouldn't help to hold any ill will toward a creature she may end up depending on to help her survive out in the wilderness, at least for as long as it took to build a boat to get off of this island.
Hm.. but yes, ghosts. Sort of? That sounded like a common enough answer; one she often received from people who did not outright believe, but yet at the same time wanted to think there was something past this world. "That be a very typical answer, believe it or not. Then again, I suppose it be difficult to believe in things you can't see. Takes quite a bit of... faith. Faith isn't something people invest in unless they have a reason to."

Enzili didn't really like hearing that his answer was typical, because well... that was just annoying. His liked many an entrance, or a bit of a scene, whichever came first but it wasn't as if he could take it back. Slowly the rabbit scrunched up his nose but he grinned anyway.
"Why's it typical?" He tilted his head and reached out to poke at the card. "Whatever... Whether or not, tell me... Do you? You sound like you've got a whole bunch of faith in it?"
Zili's interest was now peaked. There was something in the way she spoke on the topic that made it sound a lot like she either had a lot of knowledge in the subject, believed in it herself, or she was just a really good storyteller -- all three would prove to be entertaining. His little tail wiggled eagerly as he leaned in, hoping to get more out of her.
