((Long involved backstory has been developed. Everyone thinks he's dead and he's now wandering around the Capital on his own. Someday ku might write a fic. Any questions, feel free to ask <3))While out, wandering around the capital, the attention of a craft store, with a sale!, caught his eye. Quickly forgetting everything, he rushed off towards it. Now, he stood huddled in the back corner of the store, his full attention on what was held in his two hands. Glancing back and forth between the two different spools of thread in his hands, he clicked his beak in thought. Which one would look better? He really liked the shade of the dark blue one but the purple one would probably look better with the hair. Choices, choices. Crouching down he placed both on the floor in front of him. Tilting his head to the side he saw something out of the corner of his eye. Oh! That green was a very pretty shade. Grabbing it he placed it next to the others. Scratching at his head, shaking his hair back into place afterward, he gave a frown. This looked like it was going to be a really tough decision to make, especially for a small child. Life should not be this hard!

Oh goodness, the craft store was having a sale! Iphis stopped dead in his tracks and looked through the windows, longingly. He really shouldn't go in, he knew. It wasn't like he needed more lace. Except he always needed more lace. And maybe they had a couple new patterns he could modify to suit his purposes. And it was a sale. Iphis was very much the kind of shopper who saw something marked two for one and then bought twelve. (Now he and Zeev had all the fresh, delicately-scented soap they'd need for the next seven months. Good thing Iphis was such a smart shopper.) He darted quickly into the store, as if being watched, and felt a swell of joy and serenity as he stood among the crafting supplies. Oh, there was the tulle, and the delicate old lace, and the--child? He looked to be complicating something intently. "I'd go with the blue," he said, helpfully.

Nik jumped giving a small shrill thrill as he did so. Having been so engrossed in his pondering his decision that he had not noticed anyone coming up behind him.
"AH! Sorry! " He stumbled over his words, trying to recover from his scare. Glancing back down at the thread that had been knocked over and scattered a little in his fright, he quickly gathered them up. Fumbling them in his hands, he looked from one to another. "The blue one, really?"
Putting down the other two colors, keeping the blue one, he picked up the puppet that was in-progress. Titling his head to the side as he considered he gave a nod when he found he agreed with the choice.
Looking back up at the stranger he, "It does! Thank you!" Blinking, he realized that it was a stranger before him. "I'm Nikolai, who are you?"

"Iphis, pleased to meet you," he said, cheerfully. He smoothed out his dress and looked down at the little proto-puppet, with the glee that can only be found in discovering someone one considers to be a kindred spirit. So few people appreciated the fine craft of making dolls. He reminded Iphis a bit of when he was a little girl, sitting around his tiny tea table with his tiny tea set and serving tiny scones to the ragdolls he'd stitched together and the porcelain dolls he'd been given by family.
Those were good years. Even if Eir broke some of the dolls and Vishne always cried because he said he didn't want to be part of a stupid tea party but apparently he kind of did. Brothers were odd.
The attention he had planned on devoting to fabric diverted itself to the kid. "How long have you been making puppets?"

"Iphis is a pretty name" the lad replies with a smile. The - he was pretty sure it was a female, right? - seemed like she was a very nice person. Definitely compared to those other people who had tried to befriend him.
Any wariness he might have had faded away when he was asked about the puppet he was holding. This person surely would not be one to make fun of him for enjoying them, right. She seemed like she was honestly interested enough in them. "Oh, these?" Scratching his head he tilted it again. He gave a small shrug, "for a long while."
His skills at making them had slowly improved too. Not that these would in any sense be called 'professionally' done or anything but at least now they somewhat . . . in the right light . . . represented what they were suppose to be. His siblings had liked to tease him about his first few attempts he had made from his hijacked father's socks.

Really, the puppets were kind of cute, and Iphis was definitely in favor of helping people advance their interests, especially if their interests seemed to include making adorable things.
"I've made plenty of dolls," he said, brightly. He'd even managed to hold on to his very first ragdoll, Bernadette, and she'd only required one new arm after the original had been ripped out in one of Monty's games of Capture the Castle (And Slaughter Everyone Inside). She hadn't conformed to the standards of doll beauty, but Iphis had loved her all the same. "If you like, I can help you along with yours."
Though something seemed awfully curious about the whole thing, though. Iphis couldn't quite place what is was. A Highlander? No. A Queen? Not that. It was...something more subtle...
"Oh," he said, a little alarmed. "Are you all by yourself?"

"You make dolls too?" He asked excitedly, bounding up to his feet. He knew he would like this nice lady! She understood! Maybe she could even help him out too?
"This is one of my newest ones, it is based off one of my friends . . . or at least someone who I used to know." He held the doll out for the albino's inspection. "You would not mind helping me? That would be wonderful! I am still learning," he added. He did not want the female thinking that he was bad at making them, he was just somewhat inexperienced. But if she was willing to help him he could become better at it and then everyone would be jealous!
At the female's startled question he glanced up, meeting her eyes a moment before looking away. He would not be able to hide all of the wariness in them. "Well . . . Yes and no?"

"Oh, yes, I'd love to help," he said, excitedly, and had to stop his brain from floating away, balloon-like, into a happy fantasy atmosphere in which he taught this child everything he knew and then sent him off into the world, armed with thread and wearing pink ruffly armor, to do battle with drabness and wickedness. But he was getting carried away. Best to start out with some stitching techniques.
His non-answer about being by himself but not was strange and kind of puzzling, though. Maybe it just meant his parents were waiting outside somewhere for him. He understood. Not many people he knew liked to come into these kinds of stores with him. Zeev would, if Iphis made enough sad faces, but he had the distinct sense that it ranked somewhere directly below "accidentally dismembering a limb" on his list of favorite activities.
He grabbed a little slip of paper from his purse and scribbled down his address. "Ask your guardians if you can come over! I'll make you tea."

He was excited about this new lady he had just met. Most of his family members had never shown any interest in his crafts - other than to pick on him for it. And she was willing to help him make them too!
Taking the piece of paper he had been handed with the address on it, he placed it into a safe place. Did not want that getting lost.
"Thanks again! Are you sure you do not mind?"
Receiving the acknowledgment that it would not be, he bid the canine a good day. It looked like his luck was turning around. Purchasing the correct color spool of thread, he headed out onto the busy street again.
Though he had left the company of the fairy-female not sure what he was going to do about the offer by the time his feet hit the busy street had had already decided he was going to take her up on her offer.
Now it was just a matter of finding the address.

The boy showed up at the door a few days later while Iphis was putting the final frills on a new dolly dress. People sometimes asked for a moratorium on ruffles, but with dolls he had to exercise no such restraint. He felt almost like some sort of mad scientist, like Auntie Minh, going where no dressmaker had ever gone before, into the depths of insanity!
The moment passed. He set down the doll and went to the door. "Ah, it's good to see you! I'm glad your parents let you out. My siblings got to wander all the time growing up--I think Mom thought roaming would build character or something. Come on in," he said, remembering what he was doing, stepping aside so the boy could enter his--ever so smartly decorated!--house. Zeev had put a stop to some of the interior design ideas he'd had, but on the whole he was pretty satisfied with the place. "I'll get some tea on for us."
