Nik was a little confused by her answer. What did she mean . . . ? Maybe she had misunderstood him. Oh well, he was not one to point out the errors of others but rather joined along.
"Could we really?!" He asked, excitedly, thinking of his siblings and the times they had made fun of him for his sock puppets. Meeting Ms. Iphis was turning out to be one of the best things that had happened to him in a while. He could not wait till he learned more of the trade from her. Soon he would be able to make all sorts of things.
Zeev silently ate his sandwiches, watching the interaction between the two of them. Though it was not blatant, there was something about the lad that left him wondering . . . .
Though he assumed it was here in the Capital, he asked, "Where do you and your family live?"
Nik shifted uncomfortably in his chair, not sure how to answer the wolf's question.

Iphis looked at Nik attentively and with no small degree of concern, waiting for an answer. Perhaps this was worse than he had thought. What if Nik wasn't answering, and looked so uncomfortable, because he and his family didn't have a home, and he was too ashamed to admit it? Maybe they didn't want Nik sewing because they couldn't afford it. That would be a horrible tragedy.
Maybe that was why Nik needed so many sandwiches too. Couldn't afford the food. He couldn't very well eat the cardboard box, that was his shelter. And the poor thing wasn't even one of those heart-warming redheaded orphans who seemed to be all the rage these days, getting adopted by rich militant capitalists and performing their dance numbers...
"It's all right," Iphis said, soothingly. "You don't need to be ashamed of living in a box."

Zeev was quiet for a long minute before titling his head as he looked at his mate. If he did not comprehend - to some degree or fashion - how the female's mind worked he would not be as amused but sometimes she still just caught him off guard.
"I highly doubt they are living in a box, love"
Nik grasped onto that end of the conversation. "Yeah! It is not a box! It is more of a . . .well, a cave of sorts. There are quiet a few interesting people hanging around under bridges here in the Capital" He gave a sage nod of his head.
He bit into his sandwich before it hit him what he had just revealed. Blushing he ducked his head. The two of them would hardly want him around anymore since they had just learned of his living situation. They might even think him a thief.
Gasping he quickly added, "Not that I . . . I would never . . . "

Worse and worse! All sorts of strange things lived under bridges, like old people with crazy hair who reeked of vodka and kept trying to give you candy. Iphis had met those kinds of people. They were friendly but he had sensed their intentions were unseemly. In what way, he was never able to fathom, but something about their unwashed sociability had seemed awfully peculiar.
"I know you would never eat candy with those sorts of people," Iphis said reassuringly. "And you will have to worry about it again! Because you and your parents are more than welcome to stay with us until they find their feet again." He thought about this for a moment. "I'm sure I'll be able to clean out the guest bedroom...somehow..." That was an awful lot of crafting material to move. The guest room had sort of become his second supply room, which was in turn like his second work room. But he was determined to make it work.

Zeev gave a long suffering sigh before shaking his head and silently chuckling. Those were the kind of people that Iphis would take candy from, probably on some off the wall justification of them needing love too.
At his mentioning that the kid could live with them he straightened, worry gnawing at him. He did not want Iphis promising something that would he would not be able to follow through on, be it because it was dangerous or illegal. After all, they knew nothing about the kid. Where he was actually from, who he was, not to mention the countless other questions and concerns that involved the real world.
Though, now that he thought about it, as of right now it might be a good temporary situation. He would keep a good eye on the lad to make sure it was going to be a threat to any of them and it would keep the kid off the street if what he suspected about him was true. Having spent countless nights and days on the streets himself he was more than aware of just what dangers were out there.
"Oh no, I couldn’t” He replied quickly, his voice squawking a little from surprise. He was not sure what to make of this sudden situation, part of him was thrilled at the idea that the pretty canine would want him to stay here with them, but past encounters had him leery at the same time. Not sure what to do with himself he glanced back down at his sandwich, taking another bite.

At some point Iphis had firmly made his mind up on the matter, and his mind finally deigned to tell him that he had done this. There was simply no way he was going to let this boy live in a cave and trade candy with bridge-people when they had perfectly serviceable space for him here. Well, they would have perfectly serviceable space, at any rate. Iphis sensed that he was going to have a bit of a project ahead of him cleaning out that room, but nothing was beyond his determination he thought.
He was certain that Zeev would agree that this was the correct course of action. And it was only a temporary thing.
"I am almost totally confident that you could!" he said, in what he thought was a very authoritative and motherly tone if he did say so himself. "And in fact I think I am going to have to insist. I could never sleep at night knowing that under some bridge, you were in a wet, cold, soggy box, probably being bullied by fish...We will put a nice roof over your head until we retrieve your parents. I assure you it is not soggy at all."
And that, he thought, was how good decisions were made.
