Pushing the door open with his snout he made his way inside, toting a few bags. While out on his usual errands he had remembered that they were out of a few food items at home and had decided to pick some new ones. Seeing the stranger sitting in his living room he only gave a moments pause before continuing on into the kitchen where he assumed Iphis was due to the sounds. Dropping the bags just inside the door way he greeted her with a fond nudge against her neck. "Who's the boy?" He had learned from the first day of meeting the canine that Iphis tended to take anything that looked cute or in need of help into his home. It was one of the things that had convinced Zeev that he needed to stay with her. Curious as two who the feathered canine was Nik silently wandered over to the doorway to peer in, not that he was trying to ease drop.

He turned and gave Zeev a peck on the cheek. "That's Nik. He's a sweet boy. I met him in a fabric store and he wanted to learn how to sew better, so I thought I would give him a hand!" He then happily informed him of his progress: "He's already getting the basics down. Pretty soon he'll be doing the complicated stitches then piecing together clothes and then I suppose he'll do fashion shows and become world-famous. But," he said, "that's just my prediction!"
He could have sworn there was something he was going to ask Zeev. He contemplated this for a moment. He added pickles to the sandwiches. A ha! The sandwiches. "I don't suppose I could persuade you to finish these sandwiches while I check up on him, could I? There are also cakes around here somewhere. Do you remember where I stashed them?"

Zeev gave a low chuckle of amusement; it was a good thing she was so adorable. "You mean where I stashed them. Yes, Love, go take care of your guest and I will see to everything in here"
Shaking his head at his fanciful mate he went to work at the task now assigned to him in the kitchen.
"I will be out with these shortly."
Hearing that Iphis would be heading back his way he quickly made his way back to the couch he had been sitting on before his ease dropping. Picking up the piece of cloth he had been working on he eyed it, pretending to be have been studying it the whole time.
Glancing up he saw that Iphis was coming back into the living room and so he offered a happy chirp and a smile to him.

Iphis gave Zeev a bright smile of thanks and headed back into the living room to check in on Nik. He had made curiously little progress since Iphis disappeared into the kitchen and was studying his cloth as though he wasn't sure what to do with it--then he smiled to try to cover it up, but Iphis had seen! He had been right, then: the poor thing must have felt all lost without supervision, with all that daunting thread and fabric. A wave of sadness swept over him and then receded. He was back now, and everything was okay.
He sat back down and got him back on track with the backstitches he was practicing. "Zeev will be out in just a moment and then you can really meet him and we can have a snack," he said enthusiastically. "His feathers gave me an idea for the most incredible hat a while ago, though I still haven't had time to make it..."

So the stranger that had walked in was named Zeev? From the little that he had seen it was pretty obvious that they were close.
Chanting to himself that there would be snacks in just a few moments, and with Iphis there, he was quick to follow orders and got back to working on his stitching.
Zeev made efficient work of throwing the sandwiches together and gathering everything else that Iphis usually desired for entertaining his guests. This was definitely something he had not seen himself doing a few years ago, he probably would have stabbed the fellow rude enough to suggest it, but little had he known. Then again, Iphis simply had to make a few sad faces and mope and Zeev soon found himself doing almost anything to please the canine.
Picking up the tray he carried it into the living room. "Snack time," he called out as he entered the room.

Iphis thanked him, cleared off a patch of the coffee table (everything got covered so quickly! It was a little disheartening, how he devoured free space), and let Zeev set the tray down.
"Nik," he said, cheerfully, plucking a small sandwich off the tray, "this is Zeev, my--" He never could rely on a single word. Each one just seemed to be missing a special something on its own. Ah, how his old novels came in handy at times like these! He could just rattle off a list: "--mate, beau, paramour, stalwart man-friend, inamorato, suitor, beloved, and more." He paused for a moment, and then added, "Sweetheart. Also, he makes a fine sandwich. I don't think we have a precise term that covers that in Common. And Zeev, I just told you about Nik. Hopefully he'll be back for more sewing lessons so we can all get to know each other better."

Bringing the tray over he set it down in the spot that Iphis had just demoed over to prepare room. Waving to them with one paw he motioned for Nik to feel free to take some. Though not starved, the boy was looking pretty thin. Then again, any amount of time spent in Iphis' company was sure to remedy that if one was not watching their weight.
"It is a pleasure to met you Nik." Sending a look towards his mate - one that clearly showed he was used to the long list of names but was not necessarily happy with the long winded acknowledgment - he replied, "You can just call me Zeev."
Taking his seat next to Iphis, he picked up a sandwich for himself, content to stay in their company at least for a short time.
"It is a pleasure to meet you Mr. Zeev." Taking a sandwich he daintily bit into it. "I hope to come back for more lessons, that is if you are still willing to teach me."

"Of course," Iphis said, cheerfully, nabbing a sandwich and then taking a small bite. Nik looked like he needed sandwich more than Iphis did, honestly. He felt the terrible need to feed people coming on. Perhaps it was some residual impulse from years of trying to get his dolls to eat cake but ending up feeding it to Monty and pretending they ate it; people who needed food (and had actual mouths and stomachs) were going to have food.
"You can come back as often as your parents let you." Brilliance struck. What was better than feeding one person? Feeding many people! "You should bring them over sometime! I'm sure they're sweet. The Highlands produce some very nice cloth, though they try to sell it so high for some reason..." He got back on track. "Maybe when you've learned a little more and can show off some really nice work!"

Zeev shook his head at his mate's antics. Nothing was going to ever change the female and it was something he had long learned to think of as endearing of her. She was seriously the only person he had ever met that never felt any sense of threat from strangers and was not above inviting them into her home on a whim.
Nik's wings drooped at the mention of his family. He was not really sure what had happened. One minute they had moved to the Capital and the next . . . well he was here now. He really hoped that he would be able to find them again, he really missed them something fierce.
"I can . . .ask them . . . but I am not sure if they will want to come. They are not really interested in things like this." He gave a small shrug hoping that would help cover how awkward he had felt answering her questions.

Iphis felt a rush of sadness; he thought he understood the story. The poor thing could hardly talk about it. Perhaps his parents were staunch anti-sewing activists, wanting to get their son out of the house but not wanting to openly acknowledge or support his hobby. Or maybe they didn't know Nik was coming here to sew at all! Maybe he told his parents he was lifting weights or chugging beer or something.
After all, there had been many people when he was growing up who told him that he shouldn't be playing with dolls or making clothes for them. Well, the ones who had eventually figured out he was a boy told him that. Most of them tended to be quite shocked by that revelation too. Iphis didn't see what the difference was. Zeev referred to him as a she most of the time and neither of them had any problem with it at all.
But perhaps Nik's parents were some of those odd types of people. "No, no, I insist!" he said, empathetically. "We will show them the error of their ways!"
