It's that time again...contest time!
The whole point of this contest is to select four participants in the upcoming Plot-Related RP Quest. Rather than items or whatnot, the prizes for four lucky characters will be participating in this quest, which is where prizes will be given based upon completion of the quest objectives. Plus, of course, participating in a plot RP gets you 10 extra points right off the bat.
But! You can't even participate if a character isn't chosen. I can hear you asking me, "Oh Jenn, mighty and powerful adminatrix of doom and fluff, how can our character be chosen!" Being the kind and generous soul that I am - and in a very silly mood, might I add - I shall tell you. No need to thank me! I'm just that nice.
Submit with one post per character following the prompt. If you're submitting with multiple characters, that's wonderful. Please do it in separate posts. Note that children may not participate due to the dangerous nature of the quest. They would never be chosen. If you have a child you want to give a go, they need to grow first. Do not submit a prompt for an ineligible child. Also, if you're thinking of raising your character's rank, I'd recommend doing it before you submit. This isn't a necessity, of course, but higher-ranked participants will have an edge when it comes to magic.
This will be open for two weeks from its posting date and close sometime on October 11, 2007. Any entries submitted after that day will not be accepted. I would ask that you get them in before the very last minute on that day because I'm operating on a different time zone than the rest of you. Do not count on getting it in by 11:59PM your time on the eleventh. In fact, I would strongly suggest that you have it in at least a day before whenever your midnight is. I reserve complete right to close this /whenever I want/ on the eleventh. No whining. None.
Judging will be done by both myself and Nathalia. Between us, we will pick four participants, one of each suit, as the winners.
Form
Dealer: (Being you, of course...) Name: ID: Suit: Rank:
Reaction to Announcement: (Write two or three sentences - and by this I just mean not a huge amount - about your character's initial reaction to Queen Serafino's announcement that he requires the services of four magically capable individuals, one of each suit, to participate in a very special quest. It's okay if they don't like him. XD Not everybody does, not at all. This is their personal response, be it thought or spoken or acted, right after they've seen a sign with the announcement.)
Writing Prompt: (Write an RP-length drabble of 150-500 words where the character in question uses the magical powers they possess in some manner. Being very short or very long won't matter, so long as what's there is quality. Feel free to be creative, please!)
Please keep in mind that you do not receive points for this prompt as fanfic because it is a contest entry.
RESULTS
Hearts - Pravus (Ten): Only entrant. Also, his use of his unique power and his transformation made us squee.
Diamonds - Theofilus (Jack): While both entries were written in excellent style (and adorable), we thought that Theo's use of his abilities was a bit better done in terms of the contest's requirements.
Spades - Ophelia (Nine): Such a difficult choice here. We probably debated the longest over this suit. Astyana's entry was incredibly well-written and we thought it deserved recognition, but the sheer creativity displayed in Ophelia's entry swayed us in the end. Taking a water-creation ability and turning it into an explosive weapon... that's not something you see every day. Blyn's entry seemed a little rushed and not quite up-to-par. Using his ability to find his way in the dark was good, but a bit more would have brought it up a notch.
Clubs - Majida (Ten): This was also a very hard decision and, in the end, came down to the roll of a d20. ^^ Maji was even, Gojirra was odds. While Julius's entry was very nice, he felt like more of a 'support character' than an individual in his own right. We loved Gojirra's entry, but seeing Maji 'come into her own' with her powers made her equally appealing.

Dealer: Kari Muffin Name: Theofilus ID: SD020 Suit: Diamond Rank: Jack
Reaction to Announcement: Theofilus tilted his head curiously at the thought of helping the Queen of Hearts. He was a man to be fear, that was for sure, but gaining his respect in more than shipping would be a good idea. Still, it was curious that he would ask for a person of each suit, what sort of task would he be asked to do?
Writing Prompt: Rock and a hard place was the first cliché that popped into Theofilus's head as he stared at the customer who was giving his firm such a hard time. It was a young woman, a eight of spades from the Ranges, who refused to give payment for their services. They had shipped a good deal of river stones and koi to the proper location promptly. She really had no reason to refuse paying them, and Theo didn't appreciate people who tried to take money out of his pocket. "Miss there really is no way to deny the written proof and witnesses."
"I'm telling you I didn't get anything!"
He had been nice for a hour while arguing with this customer and was tired of it. He concentrated slightly, reaching down into the warm fuzzy feeling. He smiled at the young woman and leaned forward. "We've been talking for such a long time, would you like a cup of tea?"
"That would be lovely," she looked confused as she spoke. She didn't seem to want to act so nice to him, but it was difficult when he was acting so... nice.
He continued in a kind voice while pouring to tea, "Perhaps you could explain to me how the witnesses could be wrong?"
She growled and looked away. Obviously she had played this game with a Diamond before. Theofilus slide the tea cup towards her anyway, and focused on another ability. Feeling around for it mentally before focusing on getting the Truth from her. Truth, that was very important virtue.
"Miss, I must ask, why do you think our firm failed to perform properly?" he said nonchalantly.
"I don't think that."
/Lie/.
"I just think that there's been a misunderstanding!"
/Lie./
"I think you're a very reputable firm! It could have been someone from our end."
/Lies you think it's our fault!/
"But I didn't receive the shipment!"
Truth? That was interesting. Perhaps the secretary who signed the papers hadn't told her about the shipment arriving? This was just one big misunderstanding... or this poor woman was being taken advantage of. Well, he supposed using this spell to save him grief and help a woman from being robbed blind was a good use of magic. He also held a bit more respect for the woman's tenacity.
"You personally didn't receive shipment, but it was handed over to your secretary. She informed us that you received the shipment, she even signed for it." Theofilus slipped one of the drawers and place the papers on the desk. He pointed to the signature at the bottom of the receipt pages. The woman looked startled.
"I was... never informed of this."
He offered her his hand and some comfort. "If you would like us to help you sort this out, we're more than willing to help you in anyway possible. We apologize for giving you such a difficult time."
"No... Thank you. I'm so sorry about all of this," she said with a weary look.
It would be a long day for both of them, but it would eventually come to an end.

Dealer: Spiderfly Name: Pravus ID: SD028 Suit: Hearts Rank: 10
Reaction to Announcement: Pravus wandered down the street and stopped as he noticed a rather official-looking sign. He read it with mild curiousity after he saw his Queen's name emblazoned upon it and sneered a little in interest. For those of magical ability. . . he laughed, then winced as his back moved oddly. Oh yes, he had that in Spades. Or rather, Hearts.
Writing Prompt: Finally. . . he had it. Pravus had saved, stolen, everything for this day. A small box sat before him on the alleyway ground and he watched it with a sort of gruesome interest. He tore it apart quickly with teeth and claws until the odd bone form of a Jabberwocky Spine lay glistening in front of him.
"Yes..." He hissed in pleasure. Finally it was his. Pravus leaned over it for a closer look before suddenly flipping over and placing his own back upon the magical object. He frowned... nothing, and then... Pravus screamed. The Jabberwocky Spine, as if come to life, latched onto his back and began rooting itself into his spine.
The pain was mind-numbing and tears sprang forth from his eyes as Pravus writhed on the ground. A strangled scream broke forth as the spine rooted its way deeper, rending flesh and grabbing muscle. It forced its way through and around tissue that was never meant to be disturbed and when he thought it was finally over... the pain returned tenfold.
His own spine now being wrenched outwards, sideways, in all directions. The Jabberwocky Spine had attached fully to his own and was now ripping it out through his back, twisting it and extending his neck. Eventually the pain was gone and Pravus was left laying on the ground, panting and heaving for air.
Another scream sounded but this time, it was not Pravus. The cat lifted pain-edged eyes upwards, noticing a canine at the end of the alley staring at him.
"Monster!" She screamed again and Pravus growled, reaching out with a paw as if he could force her to come towards him, wanting to hurt. Suddenly she straightened and began to walk jerkily towards him. And yet... at this action, she began screaming even louder.
He looked down at his paw curiously and then up at the terrified woman that stood so very still before him. 'Nose,' he thought, and her right hand lifted to touch her nose, her eyes swimming with terrified tears and nearly rolling into the back of her head.
"Oh... yes..." He hissed again before coughing in pain as his spine almost felt like it moved, pressing on his lungs in an odd way. Her screams began to grate his nerves and he looked up at her still form again, using an ability he knew all too well. 'PAIN!'
The whites of her eyes appeared as she obviously fainted from the pain and yet she remained standing, even unconscious. Pravus gritted his teeth in a pained smirk. "Definately yes." He forced himself to his feet, his world seemingly off-kilter and sideways. He'd have to hurt this one more for calling him a monster. She deserved it.
'Snap,' He thought, and one of her legs suddenly crumpled, bone splintering beneath flesh. 'Snap,' he thought again, and frowned as her other leg stayed intact. Pity... but it would do until he learned the limitations of this painful - delightful - enhancement.

I'd just like to throw out a one week warning for this contest, less if you discount the 'uncertain' last day! And we only have two entries...makes me rather sad. No black suits want to play? Regardless, this is a note to let people know the deadline is half-up.

Reaction to Announcement:
When she saw the posted, she stopped in her track. Helping Serafino? She wanted to so badly but his words echoed in her ears…banishment never being about to step foot in the palace again. However, this was not the same was it and besides maybe she could be of some help to his majesty and show him that she was not just some troublemaker. That she was much more than that and in this set her mind to follow the poster’s directions to apply for the position.
Writing Prompt:
Why did bad things seem to just follow her wherever she went? She hustled as fast as she could down the alleyway and looked for an escape, but there was none to be found. She whipped around to face her assailant. He stood there, glared at her, and blocked the only escape she had. She whimpered quietly as she tried to think of a way out of the current mess she was in.
She thought quickly back to how this had happened. She had just been walking through the city and had noticed that she was being followed. She did not know why, for she had nothing of any value on her person, but yet with every turn she made she could feel him right behind her until she bolted as fast as she could and came to the now blocked alleyway.
“Here pretty bird…Come with me Pretty Bird…” he coaxed to her as he crept closer and closer to the shivering form. She did not know what to do, she just wanted to hide and so she just closed her eyes. As she did so little did she realize that she was activating her strongest magical ability.
“Go away…GO AWAY AND LEAVE ME ALONE!!” She shouted at the male and as the last word escaped her beak, the cobble stone street around her exploded out wards towards the male. He cried out in agony as small shards of stone stuck in his body and he fell to the ground in shock in addition to the force of the blow.
She opened her eyes and stood there watching the man as he lay in a mass of rubble. He did not move but he was still alive. She thanked her lucky stars as she quickly ran out of alley way and towards home. She would have to try that again when she had a stroke of bad luck…perhaps it would be helpful again.

*hums and pokes at this* Good to know that there's more interest. I can certainly tailor things to suit only two participants, but really, I'd rather more people got in on the action and fun. The prizes will be...desirable for successful questers.
Also, you know you can submit multiple characters if you're having trouble deciding on one, right?

Dealer: Tigeress Name: Astyana ID: SD029 Suit: Spades Rank: Jack
Reaction to Announcement: At first she didn't know why she had bothered to come out to see the palace again, it only brought out old bitterness. Her attention was piqued by a sign that seemed out of place, or at least, she couldn't remember it being there before. After reading through quickly, she smiled to herself... she'd rub his snooty nose in it, making the mistake of throwing out a capable Jack like a sack of garbage...
Writing Prompt: It was unusually busy in the city today, and she could quickly spot creatures from, literally, every realm. Most of them were unnerving in their looks, they just gave off strange vibes. Two figures stood out more than most, however, right at the corner of an alleyway, grinning and snickering over something she couldn't hear. However, when she was close enough to see them clearly, she noticed a rather jumpy looking female heading towards the path through the buildings.
The scene clicked in her mind and brought a shiver up her spine as she watched their eyes linger on the female whose face was downcast, pushing forward forcefully through the thinning crowd. Astyana took a deep breath, and suddenly the world went silent.
"She doesn't look like the type to put up a fight, besides, we're on break! The master won't mind if we... ah... take some early payment this week..." The chuckle grated on her ears, the creature was as despicable as the one next to him. "Alright, I'm convinced, let's do it. Try to keep quiet, and look casual." He leaned back after speaking, his face feigning disinterest at the world.
The female rounded the corner then, both figures beginning to move with malicious smirks upon their maws. "Keep quiet? Ain't nobody gonna notice she's even gone..." It was sadly true, under normal circumstances, nobody would have ever heard her.
They were gaining on the female quicker than she'd anticipated, so she ran in a full out sprint through the crowd, attempting to force her way through. Her sheer determination saw her on the other side in seconds, just in time to see the startled response of the feline, and the knife that had been pulled on her.
Thinking fast, she kept coming at them, watching the first set of sickly yellow eyes take her in with a hopeful sneer. She focussed for a moment, and then a beautiful emerald Slithey Tove appeared on her shoulder, building pressure in it's maw instantly.
"Let her go." Her voice was cool and loud, the shout would go unheard but it helped release some of the anger and fear that had built inside her. Momentarily distracted, the female's arm had been released, though she couldn't run with them so close, not yet. As the first began to advance, Astyana came forward at him, feigning a punch in order to kick him hard in the shin. She heard a pop and was pleased with the sudden cry that passed from his lips. Adrenaline brought her almost face-to-face with the second male, his blade switching now to her as he grabbed her about the neck.
The feline was frozen in fear, but luckily Astyana's emerald companion knew what to do, spitting a ball of fierce light into the male's eyes as he shrieked and fell back, clawing at the air and then rubbing his blinded eyes. "RUN." Astyana commanded, grabbing the arm of the female and running for the other side of the alleyway.

Yay Astyana! <3 Kick those jerks' butts. My only comment is that it's a bit over limit. The word counter marks it at 659. I'd ask that you cut it back to 500, please. ^_^
