Minh perked up just a tad at the mention of jewel crafting—it seemed utterly perfect; Aderlass was the ideal combination of oddity and treasure and everything an aspiring pirate could wish for. She watched him speculatively for a moment before she remembered she was supposed to be practicing subtlety, and turned her attention to the tea. Mnem had made it too dark again—which tended to lend it an overtone of something that tasted remarkably like dirt—but she sipped at it anyway.
Her attention turned to Haret, who had been horribly quite since checking into her inn—she’d probably picked up on the feeling of resentment her inconvenience had inspired. Minh didn’t know how to begin to apologize, though—if she even needed >:(to apologize. They had, after all, warned the two of the differences. Maybe they hadn’t been clear enough?
Regardless, she smiled at the canine, absently fiddling with the piece of grass still tucked behind her ear. Folk originating from Torquehelm weren’t an overly cheerful lot, but maybe Minh could make her smile? She tried to think of something that would get the fair canine in a more agreeable mood—but the only thing she was getting for her efforts was smoke.

Haret was absorbing the conversation, but not taking part in it; she had nothing to add and, really, no reason to be here. She didn’t think that wotever the other canine had to offer would be suitable for her two daughters and she really doubted that the Yarrow Gardens female could understand exactly wot was at stake. The oft-female residents were strong-willed and powerful, that much the Torquehelm had heard enough times to not doubt it. But the sort of terrors that bound young Zephyr’s mind, the sense of duty Mekare held for her sister… these things the black canine had no proof of occurring in the Gardens.
The black dog noticed Minh’s faint smile, but the feline added nothing to the glance and Haret had no reason to think there was anything behind the look. She bobbed her head slightly; an acknowledgement that really gave away nothing. Haret wasn’t the type to just give away everything going through her head, just like most of the others from her region. So far she had see no reason to add anything to the things going on around her.

Mnem took a contented sip of her tea and mulled over what the mouse had just said. Crafting jewelry. She didn't know what she had been expecting him to reveal, but this far exceeded her expectations. There were countless people who would rather see a unique shiny object than have cash thrust into their hands, untold numbers who would more readily make a deal for a piece of pretty art whether it was worth the amount of money it was substituted for or not.
His circumstances were very fortunate, as well--for Mnem, anyway. New to the Capital, lacking income, and with nothing better to do with his time; he sounded like he was at exactly the right place in life to enter into a sort of working partnership. And perhaps the mouse could be persuaded to take on other responsibilities, as well--for more pay, of course, and when Mnem trusted him more, but she had a good feeling that this was going to be very possible.
"Interesting," she said, contemplatively. "If you happen to have some time and energy on your hands--and it sounds as though you do--I might be able to make you an offer. I could use your services, you see, the crafting. I have a few clients who would be greatly interested in your work, should it prove of quality. And, of course, I would be more than willing to compensate you."

He contemplated over what she had just offered. It was true that he did not have much else to do on his hands. After arriving in the Capital he had seen that there was at least some chance that he would be able to open his own jewelry store, something he had taken an interest in when he had first obtained his apprenticeship. This offer seemed like it would be a step in a good direction. He could work on jewels for her, others would see his work, and all the while he could save up money and look around on his off time.
Yes he liked that idea a lot.
“I think we could work something out.” He agreed, glancing sideways to the Haret who seemed to be content to just watch, not that he blamed her. He figured to considerate he would not ask for particular details at the current moment but he would want some details ironed out before he agreed.

Mnem smiled brightly. This had gone remarkably, perfectly well. They would need to sort out the particulars of the bargain, of course, but this was a fantastic first step.
"Excellent!" she said, pushing her teacup off to the side. She could hash out the details with Aderlass in a little while. There were a couple of other matters to attend to, at the moment. Such as getting the flowers for the other canine--and she was still undecided about which kind to give the darker woman, though her good spirits were currently leaning her toward the amaranth--and feeding Monty. The little mutant ate just about any kind of meat s/he could get hir hands on, but Mnem and Minh had found it efficient to feed her some of the less successful bander experiments and whatever vermin were lurking about the apartment.
She turned to the canine and said, amiably, "I apologize for being so terribly ungracious, darling. If you'd like to come with me for a moment, I have something lovely to add to whatever gifts you'll be showering your children with."

Haret’s hidden ears laid briefly back in unease at being the focus of the Yarrow Gardens canine’s attention. She so wasn’t certain about being here. ”Do not trouble yourself,” she murmured at the apology; there certainly was no need for it when she had other business at hand. The Torquehelm canine understood fully and had no qualms with waiting for her turn. Even if she wasn’t certain she –wanted- a turn at Mnemosyne’s manipulations.
Nevertheless, Haret rose carefully and began to edge her way around the table so she could follow the other canine to… wherever these flowers might be. She still wondered if it was wise to be here. The whole house seemed to reek of something about to go terribly wrong and the black dog had enough problems on her plate without adding more.
”Do you raise many plants for sale?” she asked softly, eyes showing that she was curious and yet still very wary.

"Oh yes," Mnemosyne said, leading the other canine along to the small terrace that she had managed to turn into a makeshift greenhouse. It was where she kept some of her more showy, less deadly plants. "Not all to the public, though. I have some--private collectors--who pay quite a bit for certain special varieties. But I do have something your children might like, and it really is no trouble at all."
She gestured to a pretty collection of deep purplish-red flowers. "Amaranth," she said, cheerily, falling easily into her element. "This variety blooms all year round, with multitudes of tiny buds, so it appears to never fade or die. It's a very good omen, in that way; helps people live long and healthy lives." Mnem was not taken in by superstition, as a general rule, but the amaranth was a stark exception--she kept some near her bed, and fully appreciated the mythology that went with it. "You can do many things for your little ones with it, as well. It can be made into a very beautiful dye for clothing, when they are ready to wear it, and if you toast the grain and mix it with honey, you'll have an extremely tasty treat for them. And they're very easy to tend to."

Minh watched Mnem escort Haret deeper into the apartment, only barely interested in whatever plant the canine was going to try and pawn—she’d made a habit of exercising caution when it came to the various floras around the house, and tried to stay far, far away from it unless it was absolutely necessary—she didn’t feel particularly secure around any of the plants after a rather close brush with a mutated Venus Fly-Trap with an affinity for feline-flesh—unfortunately, the plants had pretty much taken the entirety of the first floor before she’d recognized the migration as the invasion it really was. She tended to spend most of her time in the lab these days.
She swirled her tea around her cup and studied Aderlass’ profile out of the corner of her eye—for a mouse he was rather handsome, and she was absolutely smitten with his horn mutation. What would it take…
“So—biochemist. Can I have a sample of your blood?”

He watched as the two canines walked out of the kitchen, leaving him alone with the feline who seemed to eyeballing him again. Staring into the murky water that was called tea he thought about what had happened so far. It was interesting the way that the day had changed in such a small amount of time. He had started out bored and wanting something to do and now was a chance to have a job and an income. His dream was a chance at being one step closer.
Trying not to grimace he took a sip, and then the feline said something.
“So—biochemist. Can I have a sample of your blood?”
He caught himself right before he spat out the small of tea that he had finished sipping. Quickly gulping down the tea, he blinked a few times totally disordered about what was going on. What had the feline just asked him?
“Excuse me?”
