Kel did as she was bid, seeing no real reason to doubt the canine. Nevertheless, his 'prank' brought up her head and got him a very baffled, certainly disapproving glance. She glanced back at the poor man-- who had nearly had a heart attack at the sudden appearance of the 'taur-- and bit her lip. She didn't want to 'ruin' Elias' prank, but she couldn't help herself; she quickly went back to the man and turned on the charm.
Soon he was laughing over the incident with her and waved towards the 'taur out in the street before returning to his studies. With that taken care of, Kel returned to El's side, eyes on the ground again. She was afraid he would disapprove of her actions, but she couldn't help but want to help people and that had not seemed a very nice joke.
"Uhm. . . I'm. . . not sure," she answered his earlier question, uncertain as to whether he'd even want to talk to her anymore.

El was amused to see Kel go in and patch things over for him, and waved back at the man. He felt an odd feeling when she came back out, wondering what was wrong. Besides them being back out of the library. Did she think he was mad because she'd smoothed things over?
"Now, if you're acting all cowed because you think I don't approve of you being a nice person, I'll have to take offense," he said with mock seriousness, then wondered if she would pick up on that in her present state. "What I mean is, I'm pretty much a big jerk who likes a good prank. Did something just like that to Theofilus back when he was a Nine, as I recall. Good times, there. Of course, I did it by throwing my voice. Anyway, never feel ashamed to be who you are, especially if you're a nice person. That's what I've learned in life, anyway. I'll just have to accept what an immature jerk I am."
He walked in silence for a minute. "I guess I didn't mention I'd met Theo before, huh? That's something of a story, if you want to start there." He lilted the last word up, turning the sentence into a half-question.

Her ears went back as she struggled with her natural inclination to hide in herself. She wasn't supposed to stick out or speak up. The only time she felt safe shucking off that unease was in the libraries; there she was home. She could do anything she wanted and be wotever she needed to be.
However, his mention of Theo got her attention swiftly and she stared at him with pale eyes. "You met him as a Nine?" she asked softly, puzzlement in her voice. She had met him as a Nine. That was. . . amazing.
She couldn't help her curiousity and when Elias offered to tell her the story she nodded her head a little and said softly, "I would like to hear about that." An insight of Theofilus from his earlier years! It was rather an exciting prospect to the woman.

Elias nodded his head. "Now, I only really met him the one time, Queen Shinrai associated with him the most. He was making a delivery to us back then. Rai had this thing with porcupine quills. . ." He shook his head. "Let me back up. Queen Shinrai and I have a tour guide business that we run, and we give a full experience. So, part of this 'authentic' experience is a shish kebob dinner. The skewers are 'authentic' porcupine quills that we get delivered to us. The time I met him, Queen Theofilus was making the delivery.
"So, we show him around a little, how to get out of the Marsh since he was walking. Well, we actually walked him to the nearest town where he could catch a ride back out. I don't remember what came over me, but I was in front, scouting the path, and I walk back, and throw my voice right next to him and scream bloody murder. He pretended to be calm, but his feathers were pretty ruffled. Literally. Hehe, those were good times. Honestly, I haven't seen him since, he's conducted the business through an intermediary." He grinned remembering that time. "Ah, good days those were. A lot less to worry about."

Kel listened with rapt if somewot baffled attention. Puzzlement seemed to often overcome her when Elias was around. It wasn't necessarily bad, because it wasn't the complete and utter confusion that had once swamped her all the time. El didn't make her feel stupid, but she did feel like perhaps she had missed out on something throughout the whole of her life. He made her feel like she should be doing something else, something adventurous and exciting.
Of course Theofilus had remained calm despite El's prank, though Kel could not seem to quite muster any surprise that the canine had done it. Elias seemed to live very much in the moment, even if he was thinking ahead. It was like the future just wasn't that big of a deal to him. She was jealous of his carefree nature.
"You don't seem very worried," she pointed out quietly, giving his feet a small, shy smile.

"Hey, I'm up here, those are my feet," El said. If he could just get her over her shyness. It was almost painful for him, he didn't want to imagine how she felt with it.
"And I worry, believe me. Maybe too much. But I try not to sweat things I can't control. I just take them one or two at a time, whatever I can manage. I don't always have time for a lot of downtime or recreation. Maybe that's why I have fun at other people's expense, I don't know. Don't think about it much. I guess I have some fairly big plans, and if I have to sit back and think about what it will take to get there, I might never actually do it." He shrugged. "I've had a lot of time to think about stuff like that. Introspection goes hand in hand with being a hermit, I guess. What do you think?"

She flushed and ducked her head again, when he pointed out that she was looking at his feet. It took an almost painful effort to lift her head and look him in the eyes. Even then, her cheeks heated up again and she quickly looked away on the pretense of watching the crowds around them. People just sort of slipped around Elias; it wasn't that they couldn't see him, because they made room for him to walk through, but no one seemed really aware that he was there. For a moment she forgot to be shy as she watched this strange and very cool phenomenon.
She did glance at him once more at his explanation and when her eyes flicked away this time it was thoughtfully. Well, yes, it did make sense. Even more so knowing he was a hermit for so long. Finally somewhere he could be free for action, it was only logical that he did. "I think you've thought about this too," she offered teasingly, trying to make up at least partially for her terrible shyness.

“Maybe I have,” El offered back lightly. “Thinking a lot keeps me sharp, or drives me crazy. I haven’t decided yet. Do I twitch funny?” He watched her watch the crowd, noticing that she still wasn’t making eye contact. He wondered if it was conscious pretense, or subconscious pretense, or even pretense at all. He wouldn’t push it, though, it would just make things worse, and so far Kel hadn’t done anything to deserve him giving her the riot act.
“Seriously, though, there’s a lot to think about. I’m in a very interesting place right now, being close to the Queen of Hearts but not of the Court. I’m hearing some rumors, too.” He thought for a brief moment, fought with himself, and finally decided to carry forward.
“I’m hearing some kind of troubling rumors about some Lowlanders, frankly. We’ve had our little war going on for who knows how long, but I’ve been hearing that some Lowlanders are thinking of taking their fight to other regions too. I’ve even heard of the possibility that some might be trying to infiltrate the courts and manipulate the powers that be to their own ends. You know, you hear some pretty interesting things when people don’t know you’re there, am I right? Have you heard any of that? Any high ranking Lowlanders moving around the courts?” He’d actually heard of some rumors, but was implying far more than what he’d heard. It was a gamble, hopefully it would pay off.

Kel listened but her head tilted slightly in confusion; unless she had magically become a wonderful actress, she didn't know anything about Lowlander movements. Perhaps she should have since her home region was neighbouring the land, but her mother had never allowed her near Lowlanders ever, much less the rotting, putrid region they called home. She'd met a few Lowlanders at this point, but had never had more than a passing acquaintance with any of them.
She finally gave a small, negative shake of her head, though a frown tugged gently at her lips. Queen Theofilus wouldn't be pleased with this news at all. "I haven't heard anything," she admitted, her concern showing on her face. "But I will certainly be listening for something now." She gave a small nod, not realizing that she had been making eye contact again without qualm.
