“I don’t want you to be alarmed, but that’s probably a good idea. Can you imagine what might happen if someone gets close enough to a ruler to be able to blackmail him or her into doing. . .into doing who knows what?” Elias started to fear that he was pushing his hand too much too early, so he backed off a little.
“Well, no point worrying about it. I think keeping our ears to the ground will be enough. I’ll make a deal with you, too. I’ll keep an eye out in my Court if you do the same for me. Then we can keep in contact with each other in case things go south. How’s that sound? I’ll need some way to get in touch with you quickly, though. I can only use my communication skill once per week, and you would have to be around someone else. That’ll be fun, let me tell you.” He smiled at her, either again or still. He wasn’t sure which at this point.

Kelasia hesitated for a moment before nodding a silent agreement. It only made sense, actually, now that they had this opportunity to make a sort of alliance that they did so. Her tail twitched thoughtfully. Elias seemed to have either the same quick mind or the same deep paranoid as Queen Shinrai. Perhaps he shared both of these traits, actually. It wasn't quite as off-putting as when the horse acted that way, though. Somehow, it was almost cute when Elias did it.
The woman swiftly brushed the thought away. She didn't wanted to look too closely at it, so she did not. "I think that's a good idea," she answered softly. "Though I'm not really sure about a quick way of communication other than the normal messengers."
She gave a small, uncertain shrug, though she didn't seem overly upset by not having a better idea. This was hardly her area of expertise.

"I can't either, which is the problem. If there are spies, then messengers are way too easily intercepted. The messenger could even be the spy. That's another one I'll have to remember, come to think of it." He was quiet for a moment, deep in thought.
"I'm not sure, to be honest. I'll come up with something. We could probably start off with messengers carrying a "Meet me at this place at this time" message. Then we can get together and share whatever information we have. Or. . ." now he had an idea, one that he could really sink his teeth into.
"I have an idea, but it sort of revolves around how often you go to the library. Would you say that you go every day? Failing that, is there a place outside your Palace that you visit every day, or could start visiting every day?" If he could get the Courts working together like he had envisioned, it might be less of an ordeal, but he could make this work even if things didn't work as he planned.

Kel blinked again in surprise; El's mind was working faster than hers by a great deal. "Well, I don't come to the library everyday but I do come very often. At least four or five times a week." How could she not visit all of the lovely books nearly everyday? She loved being there, loved being surrounded by pages and pages of silent literature just begging to be open and explored.
"Oh!" her exclamation brought her eyes back up to his face. "Unless there's a project for me to take care of. That might keep me in the Palace or here everyday depending on wot I have to get done." There was no point in not being honest with El; how could he plan without all of the appropriate information. She continued on so he might know. "I recently finished a large project and, right now, I could come fairly often if needed."

El nodded, throwing in an occasional mhmm, mhmm. “I see. So not every day. That shouldn’t be a problem though. How about this?” He dug through his bag and found a pencil and some scratch paper. “When you’ve got a message for me, or I have one for you, we’ll leave a paper with a mark like this,” he said, making a mark pretty similar to a Diamond laid over a Club, “and leave it attached by wax or string or something under the table we sat at today. It will say what time to meet and where.”
He thought for a moment. “Problem with that is, if the other one has already come and gone. . .well, we can leave a message saying no new news, or change it and say that there is news. That way we won’t miss one another. And if it’s urgent, we’ll send the same info by way of messenger. How’s that sound?”

Kel's ears flicked back as he laid out there plans and she gave a small, dubious nod in response to his words. Still, she was only quiet for a few moments before softly and hesitantly asking, "Uhm. . . why do we need all of these precautions, Elias?" She flushed delicately, eyes dropping to the ground again. "It just seems very involved when we could probably just send a messenger letting the other one know we need to meet. . . ?" It was definitely a question and the woman was terribly embarrassed that she even needed to ask.
El spoke as though these sorts of plans were the most commonplace thing in the world to make, even though Kel couldn't imagine why they'd have to have such an elaborate way to even find out if the other one needed to talk. It was a good plan, well, as long as no one else was using the table when they came by or no one else found the signal.

Elias thought for a good moment before answering. “I don’t suppose we probably will, to be honest. I’ve been hiding. . .um, hermited away in the Marsh for a long time, though, and that builds a certain amount of paranoia that isn’t easy to shake. I mean, there are other reasons, too. I don’t know how all the Queens are going to take to this sort of sharing, especially if the Lowlanders get a better hold in there before we can stop their plans. Plus, they might just want to keep things like this quiet to make their court seem the superior one. And, you have to admit, how would it look for you if a Jack of Clubs were to send a messenger requesting your presence. It’s only the status quo if you summon me, but it would make you look weak, or me presumptuous. Some cards think that’s worthy of a duel challenge from my experience.”
He scratched his ear thoughtfully. “You’re right. I don’t suppose the skull and daggers things are necessary right now. Just a hard habit to break as of late, especially with assassins able to get in and kill Queen Serafino. I’m probably just wired to think that way.” It was unclear whether he seemed apologetic or not.

Kel wasn't entirely certain how she should respond to the man right then. Was he upset? Should she apologize? She just couldn't tell, so she remained silent as they continued on towards the Palace of Diamonds, her thoughts whirling as she tried to follow all of the twists and turns of her conversation with Elias.
Despite the amount of time she spent there at the Palace, she still didn't consider it home. Her home was still that little apartment above the shipping firm, but she hadn't been back there in forever. Unlike some of the other Court Nobles, Kel lived solely at the Palace of Diamonds.
"You could have a patron?" she suddenly offered hesitantly. She'd read about that in a book once. "So if you come looking for me it's not on behalf of a Jack of Clubs, but perhaps a King or Queen instead." She sent him a shy, sidelong glance.

El opened his mouth to reply automatically, then closed it. He could do that, couldn’t he? He could already come in the name of the Queen of Hearts, or if that wouldn’t work, he could ask Bernard for something like that, as well. And if they took it easy and didn’t do something like that too often, they could keep doing it indefinitely. At some point someone might wonder why so many messages were traveling back and forth between the courts, but they could cross that bridge when they came to it.
“I think I could do that pretty easily, Kel. Good thinking. Nice and straightforward, efficient, and you’re not paranoid as all get out. I might have to take a lesson from your book.” He smiled sincerely. “I’ll just have to ask around and see who won’t mind doing that for me, and probably assure them that I won’t take the wrong court gossip to you.” He rolled his eyes.
