The uneasy hesitancy flared back in her eyes for a very long moment, but she tilted her head to hide her expression. Knowing that the canine was friends with the Queen of Hearts was one thing, but to suddenly realize that he might be asking Queen Shinrai to provide his alibi made her very uncomfortable. So she decided to not just think about it, as always. It was a bad habit, but that's wot she'd been trained to do.
She gave a small laugh and glanced up towards him with another brief play of humour. "Somehow, I can't see that happening." He was a bit too independent, a bit too unpredictable to fall under any of the categories she did. Effecient, probably, but she would be surprised if he didn't have trouble being utterly straightforward, as she was. Perhaps straightforward in a manner to hide other things, but not simply straightforward.

Elias wasn’t totally sure what to say to that, so he bluffed and improvised. He’d be ready again for the courts in no time! “Well, being paranoid is a hard thing to get over, and I’m not sure I’d want to. You get used to having the jitters, and it keeps you alive when a lot of other people want you dead. You know, I suppose I could always focus more on ranking up, too. Then, aside from questions about who belongs to a better Suit, I can come as another King. That would make things a lot simpler.”
He stretched his neck, rubbing it a little. He was tense, might have to take a hot bath back at his place. “I’ve been talking to Queen Shinrai about the situation with the Lowlanders, too. I don’t know what it is they have planned, but it might be in all our best interests to work together. Sort of something where we all watch each other’s backs. Nobody taking over anyone else’s power base, but agreeing that if someone attacks a Court, all the other Courts will come to their aid. Something like that. Do you know if that’s something Queen Theofilus would be interested in?”

Kel hesitated, not wanting to speak for the Queen of Diamonds without his approval. She had no reason to think he wouldn't be at least interested in some sort of alliance against the Lowlanders, but she certainly did not have clearance to begin negotiations on such a thing.
"Were he approached in regards to them," she finally answered as politically as she could, pale eyes noting the hints of stress in the man before her. "I'd guess that there's a higher likelihood of him agreeing than disagreeing." In other words, she thought so, but had no grounds to be forthright about it.
She paused as the Palace of Diamonds came into view and sent El another shy, hesitant smile. They weren't yet in actual line of sight for anyone from the Palace, but she could see the tops of the towers peeking over the city horizon. "And this is my stop." Her voice dropped lower suddenly, though she couldn't have said why.

“Good answer,” El responded. “Smart answer. I wasn’t trying to trap you, but it looks like someone has been. Maybe they’ll have an accident some time.” Like walking down the street and stumbling into a spear, he added silently. “If there’s some hope, then maybe we can get some talks set up between the two of them. I haven’t asked Queen Shinrai how he and Queen Theofilus have been getting along, I hope it’s fairly well.” He studied Kel closely, curious as to what her response to that would be.
He saw that they were still a decent distance from the Palace. If he wouldn’t have intended to suggest they part soon himself, he might have thought she was ashamed at being seen with a lowly Club. He didn’t know her well enough to know if she got hung up on things like that. In all honesty, it was a sort of elitism to assume everyone looked down on you, he realized. He knew some Clubs saw that as some sort of moral high ground. He wasn’t sure about that. He did know that he got underestimated a good deal, however, which had worked for him so far.
He gave a sort of self-mocking bow. “It was a pleasure meeting you, Kelasia,” he said, noting her lowered voice. He thought again that she might be hiding him. “I hope to see you at the library again soon. Maybe tomorrow some time?” They could set up more, and he could have some talks with Whip about the alliances, and the progress he’d made today in meeting another court member.

The skunk didn't fully follow what he meant by accidents and the like, but, as usual, it seemed his mind was moving far faster than hers. She smiled lightly at him, amused rather than insulted by the knowledge that she just couldn't keep up with him.
He seemed to pause to prompt her about the relationship between the two Queens and she answered almost automatically, "The Queens are, of course, in good terms with each other." Not that she actually knew if that were true; if she remembered correctly, the Queen of Hearts and the Queen of Diamonds had only had one meeting and that had gone fairly smoothly.
Something seemed to flicker through his eyes, but the woman couldn't catch it to analyze it in time, so she simply flushed in embarrassed pleasure when he asked if they could meet the next day. It was just political, she told herself sternly. Nothing more.
"I believe I can in the early evening," she told the man softly. "I look forward to seeing you then." Not that she really wanted to go now, but it seemed safer to do so.

Elias smiled at her answer. “Good, I’ll see you then. Hopefully we’ll be able to get things well on their way to something that will help us all.” He wasn’t walking her the rest of the way back, so he turned and walked away, blending into the crowd instinctively.
Elias walked through the Court of Hearts now unchallenged due to his continued presence at the court, and now the rank to back himself in case a stranger asked what he was doing there. He was heading toward Rai’s quarters, hoping that things weren’t too busy right now to keep him from talking with the Queen of Hearts. Elias and Rai had an unspoken agreement that Elias would be civil and politic in front of other cards, uncharacteristically so. It wouldn’t help them at all if Rai allowed a “lowly” Club to show the disrespect that was so common to their relationship, and it wouldn’t help Elias at all if Rai had to kill him for punishment. Conundrums conundrums.

Rai's study was the pinnacle of chaos and busyness, as usual. The stallion glanced up only briefly to see who had just entered, but did not yet acknowledge the Jack's presence. Finally, the Queen called it quits. "Everyone, get out" The stallion didn't even bother to send El a look; the Club would know that he was making time for the man's news. As the Cards, mostly Hearts, finally filed out, Rai waited for the door to close behind the last one before he dropped back in his chair and gave a small sigh. The weariness and fatigue slid briefly across his face before he turned to give El a swift glance. "I would say that this had better be important, but I really needed a break." He gave the canine a tired smile.

"You know, you’re never going to find someone that you completely and totally trust to be Queen along side you. You don’t trust anyone that much, Whip.” The canine pushed his shoulder off the wall on which he’d been leaning, walking up to the man, inspecting him closely. Things seemed even harder on the Queen of Hearts now that Samid was gone. Even Elias wouldn’t bring that up.
“Fortunately for you, I’ve been working on something that will free up a lot of time, not only for you, but for the other Courts as well. Of course, the real purpose of it all is to help get us an army built. You know, to help solve that pesky problem with the Lowlands and all that. And I’ll make a deal, I’ll tell you about all of it right now, if you tell my why a certain King in the Court of Diamonds might have reason to quake in fear at the mere mention of your name?” He knew he’d talked to Rai about this. If they were going to wage war on an entire region, they shouldn’t be alienating the region next door. “It’s really gooooood,” El teased. “I bet we’re already at least halfway there. I might even be able to speed things up if I can get into the Court of Clubs. Interested?”

Rai gave an answering shrug, the movement small but bringing an accentuating wince. He was a lot more tense than he had first expected. "It's not just a matter of trust," he told his long time friend, debating about trying to work some of the knots out or just ignore them for now and soak them later.
"I need someone who can fulfill the role; someone who can do the job, not get killed, not wreak too much havoc upon the Court, and still be someone I can handle working with or at least seeing on a day to day basis." It was a huge role to fill and he'd been really hoping that he would have found someone long before now. There were still a few hopefuls, though; perhaps one of them would step it up soon.
He lofted a brow at El's words, though it turned into a thoughtful grimace after a moment. "I don't know why any King of Diamonds would 'quake in fear' at the mention of my name, though having the proper respect for the Court of Hearts is always wise." Only El would be able to hear that faint note of teasing in his voice again.
