“Alright…Mnem…”[/b] Darrien looked at Mnem with intense eyes and just smiled for a little while. He was still just amazed at how stunning she was. He placed the last piece of his meal into his mouth and chewed slowly. He wanted the dinner to be over with as soon as possible so that he could spend some more time with Mnem alone, but the time just seemed to tick by slowly. Suddenly he saw the server that had seated and tended to them. He took the opportunity to wave her over and ask for the bill. She nodded and walked off to gather the information that the selkie had asked for.
“Well…this was a nice place, thank you ladies for showing us this restaurant; it was a nice change of pace.”[/b] The server returned to the table and handed Darrien a slip of paper. He glanced down at it and almost choked. He did not expect to spend that much on a meal but thankfully, he had the funds to cover it and a little extra for a nice tip. With his paw, he forced open a loosely tied sack and fished out the coins for the payment.

Shinrai didn’t like the contemplative look Minh was sending him, especially when it followed a long, introspective silence and abrupt babbling about microscopes. He had a feeling it had everything to do with his ‘alcohol poisoning.’ But, still, he had no proof and nothing new to really add to his concerns. He would sit on it for now and continue to gather his clues, poor as they might be. The Corvistowneian’s stare unnerved him further in light of his lack of knowledge.
When Darrien called for the check, the stallion did not protest, though he also didn’t miss Darrien’s sudden, surprised look. He wouldn’t expect a bunch of non-cooked food to cause that sort of reaction, but perhaps the Selkie Lakes canine was just a country bumpkin and the cost of city food was surprising? The stallion had no way to know without previous knowledge of the other man and he certainly wasn’t going to ask. If Darrien was unprepared for the cost of food, he shouldn’t have offered to pay. However, the white canine didn’t hesitate to reach for his wallet and the horse let his gaze flick elsewhere before he could think of another question for Minh. ”So you made your own design for a microscope?”

She hardly paid any attention at all to her fellow lunch companions, mind awhirl with sudden genius. Discussing her microscope and brought back the day in the library she’d spent with Kel—and what they’d been researching before wandering into the sciences. Minh had just thought of a way to possibly tame Monty.
But Shinrai had asked her a question. Right. Time to focus.
Minh hummed in way of confirmation, taking a moment to stretch after she slid out and away from the table. Her back popped with a rather atrocious crackle that felt absolutely divine and she summoned up enough concentration to answer Shinrai coherently:
“The highest grade microscope on the market isn’t strong enough for the research I’m doing. And since none of those so-called engineers seemed inclined to create something better, I took it upon myself. So I took a day out of my busy schedule to visit the library, and viola. A new breed of microscope is born.”
She really needed to have the damn thing created already, but she hadn’t run into much luck finding craftsmen that met her specifications. Everything would go so much faster if she finished the project already—but for the moment she had to be content to lag behind.
And that meant she had plenty of time to devout to training Monty.

Mnem smiled at the other canine as he took the check, and tried to tune out Minh for the moment--a difficult task, considering she had taken on that familiar "Eee hee, I am plotting!" tone of voice, even though she was just talking about another unfinished project, and when Minh was plotting Mnem usually ended up getting involved one way or another, so it was helpful to know what was going on.
"I'm glad you enjoyed yourself," she said, poking daintily at the remnants of her food. Mnem was accostomed to paying her own portion of the bill, but with Darrien it was easy to interpret this as more of a chivalric gesture than anything else, which was exceedingly cute. "I myself had a wonderful time. Minh," she said, brightly addressing the feline, "do you think you could also take time out of your busy schedule to do some shopping while I take a walk with our new friend?"

Shopping? Fuck that. Minh sent a glare that was guaranteed to strip paint at Mnem’s back, knowing that the impervious female probably wouldn’t notice it one iota but feeling better for having done it all the same. Then, drawing upon weeks of time spent with Mnem and the canine’s insistence of dabbling in subtext, Minh detected a not-so-subtle hint to take a hike. Mnem wanted to be alone—with Darrien—and Minh would get in the way of the canine’s plans to get laid. It would be so much easier if Mnem would just come right out and say these things, but Minh vaguely remembered the canine mentioning something about tact. Seemed like a whole lot of effort that could be put to better use elsewhere, really.
Minh kept quite, though. She didn’t particularly feel like starting a fight over the fact that she always did the shopping—she was more set on getting home and working with Monty.

Whether or not the Selkie Lakes canine missed it, Rai saw the hate-filled glare the feline sent to her roommate, but he was a great deal more concerned when it turned into something more speculative. Shinrai kept his position fairly easy going, but he wasn’t letting the pair out of his sight even with Mnem’s obvious ploy to get alone with Darrien. Though how to do so? He had a feeling he was either about to become a major pest or cause himself a great deal of trouble. Blast it all.
”So, Darrien, your family is in construction.” The stallion started off onto the topic with no idea where exactly he was going to go with it. Double blast. ”Where does your main business come from? Personal, Company…?” He tried to leave the question open-ended in hopes of giving himself somewhere to maneuver later; he was certainly going to need it.

e was not entirely sure where the majority of the business came from, his father had never told him that, at least not yet. He had only been working on this account for about a month now and he knew that this one was more of a city ordained matter. It was simple really...the city was growing and they needed more space. He did how ever know that the buildings were created to function as just about anything the tenants wanted to use them for. He still had yet to see the job site for him self. He would probably be going there tomorrow after he had looked over the books regarding the account in the office, which he still needed to locate.
The canine turned to the equine and smiled in a slightly embarrassed manner. “Unfortunately I’m not terribly sure if most of our business is personal or business or anything in between. My father has only charged me with one account at the moment and I do know that that one is a business matter with the city actually. I have yet to see the job site or learn about the details surrounding the account and that is why I am here.”[/b] He turned back to Mnem and motioned for her to lead the way, as he wanted to be on his way. The day was growing shorter and he did have things he wanted to take care of people…well a person he wanted to spend as much time with in the evening as possible before he had to tend to business matters.

Well, now... that was certainly interesting. The stallion set off after the canine, intrigued nearly despite himself. No wonder Darrien hadn't known how to find the business. Though he would have expected a business man like Darrien's father to ensure his son knew how to find them in the large Capital City, the horse did allow the likely possibility of this being some sort of test for the younger man. Perhaps Darrien's father simply wanted to see wot sort of ingenuity his son could show. Very interesting.
There was no censure in the man's voice, simply continued interest, "So you've come all the way from the Lakes to take over the family business or simply step in and learn your role? The whole idea of a family business was interesting to the Marshdweller anyway; he didn't know much of anything about his parents, though he did assume he much have had some. Though whether or not they were alive, he had no clue and no desire to find out.

Darrien instantly knew the answers to both of “Whip’s” questions. He knew that some day he would be taking over the family business when his father was ready to pass on the torch or worse…heaven forbid that he join his mother in an untimely fashion. Darrien panicked at the thought and quickly with his eyes searched for a clear glass. He spied one but it was some distance away, would he be able to knock it over and make it seem like an accident? Suddenly just as quickly as the thought of increasing his luck of his father not dying like his mother he found himself three steps away from the glass and out of reach. He sighed and answered the equine. “I am learning to take over for my father when he is ready to pass down the business as my grandfather did to him. I have been an apprentice for some time now…I have worked in the fields, learning my trade and treated like any other worker we have hired and it has only been recently, I think about four months now, that I have been working in the office when we are not short staffed at the construction site. My father entrusted me with this one account to see its completion as part of my training, which is why I am here in the city.”[/b]
He turned his attention back to Mnem, as he was extremely eager to talk with her alone more. “My lovely lady,”[/b] he said as he gazed at her with a longing that he had never really experienced before. “Let us go and find my destination and then perhaps a nice quite place where we can talk and get to know each other better?”[/b] He motioned for her to go ahead of them as the group reached the entryway of the eatery, but in the act, he unconsciously taped the “knuckles” of his paw on the wooden doorframe. Had he noticed he probably would have panicked, He was betrothed and in his own superstitious way he had just doomed himself to betray the trust of his intended, even if he knew it or not. For if you live by superstitions, you will be followed by them and that was precisely what Darrien’s life would consist of.
