The stallion was still not prepared to be outdone; his goal was to save the rather innocent Darrien from the untold dangers of Mnem and he would see that through to the absolute best of his abilities, regardless of being rude, unwanted, and potentially destroying a friendship before it even had a chance to begin.
"An apprentice, that's very interesting," the stallion said as he followed them out, purposefully ignoring any looks suggesting he do otherwise. "How long did your apprenticeship last?" As though he didn't have better things to be doing. He gave a purely mental sigh. Hopefully Darrien would keep in mind that he was a potential client and that it'd be best to keep him entertained. Though it might be fun to try and get the young man 'grounded' by his father. Perhaps that could end this budding relationship between Mnem and Darrien?

Mnem was getting quite annoyed by Shinrai's badgering questions, and tried not to outright glare at him. He seemed to be trying doggedly to occupy Darrien's full attention--with the main goal, she assumed, of keeping it off her, and wasn't that just like that wretched little bastard to try to ruin everything--but she had other plans, and damned if she was going to let him toss them into the fire. She had never let anyone get in her way of getting laid before, and she wasn't going to start now.
Sweetly, she said, "Oh, what's it matter? We've all been apprentices at one point or another. I spent most of my young life as one. Terribly tedious business, you know. Bore you to death, trust me." She smiled widely, sardonically. "And I wouldn't want you wandering off, since you seem so very interested."

Mnem could be quite good at hiding her annoyance, but Rai was not deceived by her 'mild' demeanour. Her eyes flashed with a promise of vengeance when she looked his way, but the stallion ignored it. He knew the price of trying to save Darrien's dubious virtue and hew as going to see it through to the end.
"Not all of us went through an apprenticeship," he argued mildly. "I went straight into a partnership when I started the tour guide business." Perhaps the fact that Elias had raised him could almost be counted as an apprenticeship, but it was really more that El had taken over the parental roles in the man's early life. "I would love to hear about Darrien's apprenticeship under his father's guidance."
There was almost a challenge for the woman to outright contradict wot he wanted.

Mnem pressed on with determination and a tight, pleasant smile, determined to get him to bug off. What she would not give for a convenient hole in the earth to appear and swallow Shinrai into complete oblivion. Preferably by means of some painful crushing process that utterly destroyed his essense and wiped the memory of his existence from the collective memory of Card-kind.
"Ah, yes. You must have been so very talented to be able to leap ahead like that. The experience of we lesser creatures would be even more terminally dull to someone so accomplished, I should think." She shrugged elegantly. She was aware that she was not giving anyone else a chance to interject, but she needed to deal with Shinrai as quickly and effeciently as possible, which was going to be difficult enough as it was. "It's all the same, really. Some masters start you off small and then work you up to the more complicated things. Some toss you right into the middle of it and you either learn to cope or probably die. It's essentially the same process no matter where you are. Are you quite through with your nosy inquiries, then?"

Rai gave a small snort at the woman's 'explanation' and 'reasoning'. "There's a great deal you don't know, Mnem," he answered in a kindly voice. "I can't see Darrien having the same. . . problems you do. He's entirely different from one of your tricks." The little witch. "Now unless you've magically become some sort of mind reader, Mnem, perhaps you'd like to be quiet long enough for someone else to get a word in."
Actually, this was something of a normal problem with the Yarrow Gardens woman. She just adored the sound of her own voice and it was evident any time she opened her freakin' mouth. He really must have been plastered the first time they met; he couldn't think of any other reason he would have agreed to go with her anywhere.

Her tricks, eh? She narrowed her eyes. Her tricks. Of course he was going to take it down this road. She really shouldn't have expected anything else. It was her steadfast philosophy that none of her parade of former lovers had anything to do with the one she was trying to bag currently--and she really was quite interested in snagging this one; his sweet personality was certainly something she could work with, if she could only get him alone--but if Shinrai wanted to play that game, fine. She could play that game.
"Oh, I'm sure there's plenty I don't know. I'm equally sure I'll get plenty of chance to find out," she said, rather pointedly. "Once, of course, you are so kind as to excuse yourself. You do, doubtless, have quite a few tricks of your own with which to amuse yourself."

Rai's eyes narrowed slightly at the woman though he replied with a low laugh. "Unfortunately, Mnem, I know that you tend to have trouble reporting details accurately; I fear the only way I can know the whole story is by remaining here to hear it myself." He kept his ears from flipping backwards in remembered annoyance; the Yarrow Gardens woman needed to re-learn how to tell the truth. She so often seemed to have forgotten how to do so.
He lofted a brow at her returning quip and this time he smirked slightly. "You would know at least a little bit about that, wouldn't you?" There was the first sign of actual animosity in his voice. "And, of course, that had to lead to my interest in this particular conversation. So, if you think about it, you really just brought this on yourself."

Her brain quite rapidly set to the task of taking her immense quantities of irritation--which, surprise of surprises, were expanding by the moment like a balloon filling with hatred rather than hot air--and compartmentalizing them into harmless, discete little chunks in the back rooms of her mind. She wasn't going to be able to partipate in an argument in the throes of rage; that just led to things like storming off and physical violence and unproductive spewing of vitriol. But fortunately, he didn't seem to be keeping an entirely cool head either. There was nothing quite like burning resentment. She collected herself.
"Yes, I'd wager I know more about it than you do," she said, with a queer smile. "I'd suggest that one day you would perhaps get a clue, but you seem to have a good deal of difficulty taking a hint about anything."

There was no real outward sign to indicate that she was regrouping, but at her nxt words it was easy to tell that she had. Rai didn't snort out loud at this knowledge, listening for the undertones and implications, but he did snort mentally. She was so bloody full of herself.
"Fortunately for me," he agreed with her first words. "I doubt clearer memories would give me any pleasure." He didn't bother letting that barb sit and settle; she would catch it and find a way to fling something back.
"Your hints are hardly subtle," he observed a bit flatly, lofting a brow at her. "It would be difficult to miss your clumsy clues this time. That seems to be implying something, Mnem. I wonder wot it could be." He sent her a sharp, pointed look. She was practically drooling over Darrien.
