They had reached the end of another busy day at the cafe, and the sparrow was bustling about on the patio in a still-unfamiliar form, clearing off some tables and making sure everything was in order for the next day's business. She moved with a rushed elegance as she loaded a tray with used glasses then rushed it inside, her figure one of the only ones remaining by this point. When she emerged once more from the doors of the building, it was with a simple sack across one feathery shoulder, her expression merry (if not a little tired). Today, she had finally acheived something great. It had taken what felt like ages, and it had certainly taken a lot of hard work, but the rewards of her efforts was as obvious as the hands she had used to wipe the tables down with. She still hesitated whenever she caught a glimpse of herself in a reflection, turning her head to investigate the feminine curves that now graced her body. She couldn't help but smile. She stood for a moment on the front step before turning to lock the door, a shadow of that smile still shimmering on her face, mostly found in the glimmering of her sky-blue eyes. She turned her head to face the building which she knew to be the shipping firm, wondering if she would have the chance to show off a little on this night before stepping confidently out onto the street. It was a new start to an already wonderful life.

Theofilus slipped the books back in their proper places. Rogers had already left for the evening, and Kelasia was still in the back room. He needed to get her out of the office--she was quite determined recently to complete research on top of her usual workload, and then some. Theofilus, of course, did not approve of her stressing to the wee hours of the night. He, however, was more often than not powerless to stop her. She was a strong willed woman even if she would never admit it. The sparrow shook his head and called into the back room. "I'll be outside, remember we have a dinner date tonight." Hopefully their plans would not fall through again. He walked out the front door and listened to it click behind him. He looked down the street at the cafe where Calia worked. The lights were already off and someone was heading home. Huh. Who on earth was that person heading home? It couldn't be her, could it?

Kelasia smiled as she waved at the man’s departing back, certain that she would be only just another minute. This was for work; she still felt bad for being late the other day when she’d gone to look for one of the names on her list at lunchtime. She’d only been 10 minutes late, but she still felt horribly guilty about it. And… there. This account was done. Kel gave a smile of relief and closed her books before rising and darting out after the man. She was very excited to have an evening meal with just Theofilus; usually it was a group thing, with customers or even Rogers. She wanted very much to have some time with just the two of them and not talk about business. Tonight… she was going to try to tell the sparrow wot was in her heart. ”I’m done, Theofilus,” she said with a blush, glancing up at the man. His gaze was securely down the street, however, and she followed it to see wot he was looking at. She caught sight of another bird down the way and asked softly, carefully keeping any disappointment or fear from her voice, despite a sudden feeling of foreboding, ”Do you know that person?”

Before she could glance away from the shipping firm, her heart still singing at the prospect of seeing Theofilus with her new form, her eye caught a sudden movement inside. Her heart skipped a beat as the handsome blue sparrow stepped out of the office, and she was unable to contain herself. Her normally graceful steps abandoned, she took off down the street towards him, every part of her body glowing with joy. "Theofilus!" she called out as she ran, slowing her pace as she neared him.
Then the door opened once more and the skunk emerged after him, and Calia felt her feet slow further at their own accord. There was a sudden pang of jealousy that shot through her, but she pushed it aside, deciding the skunk was his co-worker and that was that. There was no reason for her jealousy to rear its ugly head. She dipped her head to Kelasia in a silent greeting, then lifted her eyes to Theofilus again, a small blush present on her cheeks. She was far too shy to make a large move in public, especially in front of one of his co-workers, otherwise she would have embraced him fully.
"What are you doing out so late?[/b]" she smiled, glancing at Kel but not at all in an unfriendly manner. There was a hint of curiosity in her glance.

Oh. No. Was this going to work out well? The sparrow remained silent for one long moment as both of the females came in sight of each other. How had this actually happened? How had he been that stupid not to notice the fact that they had never known a with about each other.
"Calia!" he said with a sudden amazing amount of unnatural cheer. "This is Kelasia. We were working late tonight, that's all." He smiled. If it were not for his diamond charm he may have been horribly screwed over. Actually he was in pretty bad shape as is.
"Would you like to join us for dinner? Since we were planning to work a little bit later today, we reserved a dinner at a very nice restaurant. I'm sure they can easily give us an extra seat." That was probably a bad move. Theofilus had never been in this sort of situation before. He was becoming his dad. The horror.

The other female called Theo’s name with joy and Kelasia almost felt as though she’d been slapped. She watched the other sparrow approach and her heart sank. This beautiful, lithe creature knew the Selkie Lakes male, knew him well by the way she pronounced his name. Kel returned the greeting with her own shy smile, but her gaze swiftly dropped to the ground, unable to keep looking at the gorgeous woman.
”We were working late, that’s all.” The words were a lead weight that roped the skunk’s heart and dropped it down to her toes. Of course. She’d forgotten. She was herself. Not like this glorious, shining creature. The next thing she knew, the other bird, Calia, right? was invited along on their dinner date, and only through the training she’d received as a child kept her from crying. Her mother had never allowed her to be upset in her presence, so Kel just pretended that Mother was here and that she –couldn’t- be upset. She simply would not think about the fact that this was supposed to be her and Theofilus’ evening. If only she’d been quicker with the books! Then they wouldn’t have even met Calia!
At least she knew now, though, before she’d made an idiot of herself. Again. Depression hung at her soul like a noose.

She was unable to hide her excitement at the prospect of dinner. Lunch had felt like something years in the past, as she had put in a few extra hours of work that day to cover for a friend who couldn't make it in. For the moment, she was almost completely blinded by Theofilus's presence and his offer to join the two. She smiled up at him as she reached out a scaly hand, slowly sliding it into his own.
She had wanted to do that for so long.
"That.. would be amazing, if it isn't too much trouble.[/b]" she smiled at Kelasia, for the moment completely ignorant of the storm of emotions storming through her mind. She was just so overjoyed to have her inner fears allieved that she was completely ignorant to the other emotions that were raging through the air. "I don't want to intrude on anything.[/b]" she added quickly, glancing back at the skunk.
It was then that her motherly side picked up on Kelasia's depression, and she couldn't help but feel a pang of something - remorse? Pity? She honestly wasn't sure what it was - for the skunk, as it was more than obvious that she had done something to upset the woman. Theofilus's charm was working full-power on the lower-ranked Spade, and she had completely forgotten her inner turmoil at the sight of the two of them together. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Kelasia... Is something wrong?[/b]" her eyes shone with concern, and she unknowingly moved a little closer to Theofilus.

Smooth Theofilus. Smooth. No matter what you do when it comes to women you somehow mess up. The sparrow contemplated for a moment. He had just invited Calia to a special dinner date for two. Now there were three and Kelasia could not be happy. She was putting on her mask again, the one she wore when "nothing was wrong." Of course something was wrong!
How did he screw up so badly?
"Well, I imagine she's a bit disappointed that I'm an idiot and forgot that it was a dinner date for two." He sighed, "I owe her quite a few dinners as is. She's not just a coworker, she's a friend. Family even. I'm sorry I didn't introduce you two sooner. Things came up and... I have no idea how you never met."
Let this work. Let honesty work. He did not want to cause anyone grief. That was the last thing he wanted to do after so many ordeals.

”No, no,” Kelasia was swift to interject, glancing up briefly and only managing to catch sight of the two birds holding hands and she had to look away again. She was quiet for a moment as she tried to deal with that and Theofilus’ equally painful words despite his attempt at kindness. She was relegated from coworker, which was an improvement, she was sure, to a friend, to family. And now she finally knew wot Theo meant by the term. You didn’t date family. No, no, these thoughts had no purpose here; she knew she didn’t have anything beyond friendship with Theofilus, no matter how much she wanted to have something further. She had nothing, she was nothing. Just… like her mother had always said.
If her voice was slightly strained, Calia likely wouldn’t notice; the other woman didn’t know her after all. ”Actually, I…” She didn’t want the beautiful bird to come, she felt like so much less beside the woman. There was only one other option. ”I just thought of some other work I need to get done.” She couldn’t make herself look up at Theofilus’ face; it was already likely he could tell she was lying, though she subconsciously brought up her own charm ability.

While Calia did not know Kelasia well, she did know Theofilus and at his words, her face slowly began to fall from its previously cheered and excited state. With her expression, her hand fell from where she had placed it, her eyes seeking his own for some kind of answer, anything, for one long moment. Slowly she tore her glaze away, looking over at the skunk once more. Kelasia might not have understood what Theofilus meant, but she did, and she smiled to the skunk. There was no hatred or anger in her eyes, just a sadness. "I... Understand." she finally whispered, still not able to look at Theofilus.
And she did, too. While the skunk saw herself as being plain and the sparrow as elegant, for Calia it was the opposite. And this woman worked for him, so she was clearly intelligent and was even of the same suite and a much higher rank... Calia was not stupid, and she knew that this battle was lost before she'd had a chance to fight it. It was with kind eyes that she reached out to Kelasia, clasping her hands inside of her own. "Please. Go with him, Kelasia. He wants you with him.[/b]"
Be strong, Calia. Don't show the weakness.
She didn't know how she was still standing. She wanted her animal form again, to jump into the sky and vanish. The legs she stood on now somehow did not feel sturdy enough, and despite her earlier excitement with them, she did not trust them now.
