“Pleasure,” El inclined his head to Theo. He decided to wait on the bird’s response before he would pass any further judgement, and the bird might turn out to be a customer after all.
After the greeting he turned to his supplies. He’d be carrying the bulk of the supplies, of course, so that Whip, as a Jack of Hearts, could wow everyone with his little J and – Elias nearly had to suppress a groan even thinking about it – personality. He wouldn’t call the horse a good liar, persay, but he would also never play a game of cards with him.
He ran through a mental checklist of everything they’d need for their next trip. “I think we have anything. Do you have your authentically ambient meat skewers now?” He got a kick out of teasing Rai about those quills, and an even bigger kick out of revealing their secret to their tourists if Rai got too self-important.

"Oh! Why thank you!" Theofilus manage as he readjusted his personal supply bag. It was just enough for the fly home. He turned to the newly introduced fellow. Quite interesting, and quite humble looking. But he doubted any of the people of the Marsh were what they appeared to be.
"It's a pleasure to meet you as well, El." He said bowing his head. If he had had hands he would have offered one to the canine.
He watched as the tour guides prepared themselves for their mission. It was almost like they were going off to ready the troupes. However, he doubted it was an event that grave that drove them to do their jobs. "Whip" did sound like a commanding name though. Much harder than "El" or anything for that matter.
Theofilus was curious about the tour. He had never been involved in such an event, it never appealed to him. Somehow asking for directions seemed easier than asking for someone to show you from place to place.

Shinrai slipped expertly into his packs, weaving closed the straps in quick, precise movements. He shook his body, settling everything into place then gave a satisfied nod. "Alright, then, men. Let's move out."
It never occurred to the horse to -not- take the lead, El's teasing aside. Comparatively, it would be difficult to say which of the two tour guides had more experience; El had more time alive, but Shinrai had lived rough for a very long time. He pulled the cabin door shut behind him; there was no point in locking it. If someone was really that determined to get in, they would anyway and he didn’t want to see his windows or doors destroyed. Everything else was fairly easy to replace, but getting good, smooth wood and unbroken planes of glass out to where his home resided was difficult. Better to let them have or destroy the easy to replaced items.
As they headed out onto a trail, Rai breathed in deeply; he loved it out here. It was so beautiful. The trail itself was at first fairly obvious; any number of feet, be they hooves, paws, or something else, had tramped down the first few miles outside of the cabins. Their trail, however, gradually grew slimmer and slimmer as smaller trails diverged from their main path. Soon even they slipped from the bigger of two tracks and began following wot could barely be called a path.

Theofilus had no idea what to expect. He simply followed the equine as he lead the way down the path. The bird noticed as he walked along (in typical bird-like fashion) that the paths were slowly disappearing. He had no doubt in his mind that he would get horribly lost if he were trying to leave the marsh. Hell, he would probably end up in the Wastes rather than the Forest if he tried to navigate. Despite what people thought, he had very little sense of direction.
The sparrow suddenly remembered all of the tales about the curses that littered the marsh. Was it a taboo subject or could he risk asking "Whip?" Even if he did ask the man, would he simply brush it off as something silly? His need satisfy his curiosity was stronger than any common sense he had at the time.
"Are any of the rumors of something horribly existing in the parts of the marsh away from the paths true?" He asked aloud. Either of them could answer the simple question, he was sure that he got a lot of that. He was, after all, a tour guide. They probably wouldn't answer truthfully to begin with.

”Of course it’s true,” Shinrai glanced back over his shoulder, surprise at the question evident in his face. ”Why do you think we check the paths before bringing a group out?” Despite any exaggerations the pair of tour guides would pass on to an actual party of tourists, for their own safety, of course, Josiggy Marsh wasn’t always friendly. Beautifully exotic, but also very likely to snap off a limb or a head.
The horse put on his game face, suddenly grinning confidently at the bird. ”Never fear, Theofilus, we already paid you; there’s no point in conveniently losing you somewhere along the trail.” He gave a broad wink at the bird. His ears swiveled backwards suddenly and he turned his head quickly, raising it in the air with nostrils flared. He looked one way then the next, ears moving quickly. After several long moments, however, the horse relaxed again, though the smile had slipped away beneath the tension of the moment.

El cackled. “Except that if anyone comes looking for him, we can charge a pretty penny for leading the rescue mission.” Let the bird sit on THAT one.
Having the superior sense of smell and being the most expendable tour guide, being a lowly club and all, he moved forward to scout the path and check for anything dangerous that might have cropped up since they checked the trails. Every now and then some new predator would treat their paths and trails like a buffet line, mistaking it for a game trail. Then Elias or Shinrai would have to convince them to set up shop somewhere else. Sometimes with a bat. He also used the opportunities they spent scouting looking for any rare herbs or other plants that might be useful. Never knew when one might come across a good poison or antidote growing in.
“Everything’s still clear, Whip,” he reported when he rejoined the small group. He gave Theo a significant look. “No sign of You-Know-What, either.” He suppressed a cackle as he turned his back to the bird, letting his poker face crumble.

He chuckled. How very not humorous that was, but that was all he could do.
They were serious about the rumors though. Theofilus choked back any exclamations he had and kept his face as calm as he possibly could. So, horrible things did live in the marsh, but he could make it out alive with his two guides, he was sure of that.
Unless something went horribly wrong, and this "You-Know-What" would suddenly appear to lop their heads off. It was bothersome. To his dismay his feathers fluffed out in agitation ever so slightly.
"What do you mean by You-Know-Who?" Theofilus asked as clearly as he could muster. There was probably a hit of distress in his voice. What else would it be with such disturbing news? He eyed the canine and the equine with concern. They would be able to hand themselves, he was sure of it... but what about him?

"You Know 'Who' may be misleading," the stallion answered easily, giving Elias a small head bob of thanks and knowing that the dog would likely try to frighten their 'guest' further. "Wot is likely more accurate, because she's no longer really a who." A pointed statement, leading to the stallion glancing back over his shoulder again at the nervous bird. His voice dropped and his expression turned deadly serious. "The Ghost of Josiggy Marsh." All he needed to make the moment complete would be a convenient crack of thunder in the background.
But the day was still happy and clear and the most ominous sound they got was the faint trill of birdsong. Ah, well, he tried. Nevertheless, whether the background was frightening or not, there was still the heavy weight of his words lingering in the air across the vague marsh trail. The stallion turned slowly back to face the path and began to move again; they still had a bit of a walk ahead of them. If they wanted to get Theofilus back in some semblance of good time, they needed to keep moving.

Elias made sure to seemingly direct his attention somewhere besides toward Theo. He slowed down to narrow the distance as Shinrai was mentioning the Ghost, and took a deep breath, keeping his mouth open in a feigned yawn.
What came afterward wasn’t the soft sigh of a yawn, though. With all his might, he threw his voice to the other side of Theo, doing his best imitation of a banshee screaming bloody murder.
Not knowing what reaction he would get, but suspecting, he doubled over, cackling evilly. “You should get Whip to tell you about the time he met the Ghost. Oh, the poor bunnies! Oh, I’m being tortur-nevermind she let me go!” He cackled again, not trying to be mean persay, but not caring if he was rude. He honestly believed Rai about the Ghost more than he let on, far-fetched story or not, but it was a little hard to believe.
