Theofilus was a giant ball of feathers. He twitched. WHAT? Whatever thoughts of the ghost that Rai had spoke of were completely gone. He stared at the canine blankly. How was that a funny joke? He did not bother to open his mouth and ask he simply stared for a moment.
His feathers went down slowly. What a lovely experience. He had never met anyone who was able to throw their voice. Never. All the confusion and surprise that he had didn't display in his voice. "I have to say that was surprising." He eyed the canine again.
He looked back to the equine, "I didn't think ghosts existed." Unlike some Lakelanders he was far from superstitious. His mother had been raised in Capital City and had no need for silly superstitions. His father could careless about stepping on a crack. Together they were a strange pair who produced a cute little bookworm child and... well he didn't want to think about it. Perhaps ghosts of the past really did exist but not how everyone thought they did.

Well used to the pranks and even expecting something along the lines of this, though he still tensed up and his hindquarters skitted slightly away from the screaming shriek. Elias was getting terribly good at that. It was a good thing for the canine’s practicing, but not so wonderful for those he practiced on.
Rai gave Theo a grin that said everything and nothing; perhaps a thanks for reacting to El’s prank, perhaps reassurance against the concept of ghosts, perhaps simply enjoyment at being on the trail. ”Not many do, but they would be wrong.” The stallion wasn’t superstitious in the least, but he still felt fortunate that his wounds from that terrible night had faded; well, the physical ones at least. ”Just don’t come out into the Marsh alone at night.” Hidden behind the forced amused mask, real worry and remembered terror shone in his grey-green eyes. ”Wouldn’t want to lose such a great delivery service right after we found it, would we?”

Elias cackled again. He only cared if one soul considered him funny, and that person was El. And maybe Whip. “I have to hand it to you, most city slickers drop a pellet or two when I do that to them. You have the right stuff, kid.”
He grew grave at Rai’s warnings. “Aye, don’t come into the Marsh alone, period. We can only help you if we’re around. Cards are sometimes forgiving of mistakes, but the great outdoors isn’t usually that nice.”
He turned his face before the memory of his first time alone in the marsh altered his face. The attack had been over quickly, lucky him. He hadn’t gotten cut up, the scars had merely been internal. But they’d hardened him, and he’d learned from the experience. He realized it at the time, all those years ago, and had made it a life lesson. His pain was his teacher.
He looked back at the bird and Rai. “Good business is hard to find. Isn’t it, Whip?”

"Okay then," was all Theofilus could say. This was one of the weirdest experiences he had ever had the pleasure of being part of. He wasn't so sure if he enjoyed this or not, but he had made a business deal for the sake of the firm. "I'll remember never to come here alone."
And he would. Tourist trap or not, he probably wouldn't return unless he had business to complete. This was only the second time the West Lakes shipping firm had ever made to the area. This was the first time Theofilus had ever made a personal delivery. Shinrai, or Whip as he seemed to prefer, was a very important client that would hopefully return. Maybe he would be one of the first people to see Theofilus as the new owner?
Putting that aside. He noticed how paranoid both of the guides seemed to be. Apparently the threats in the Marsh were more than just nature. What else would make them so jumpy?

"That's good to hear," Rai answered with a nod to Elias and the informal ease that seemed to be a part of his nature; or, perhaps, a part of his tour guide cover. They continued on for a ways without speaking as the stallion, at least, had his attention focused outwards and into his homeland. Still, since it seemed quiet again, the man was slowly more willing to resume conversation.
"So, Theofilus," the stallion said as they continued to push through the wilderness of the Marsh. "How is the business doing? I heard that ownership was to change hands...?" He made it a question since he couldn't quite recall the details of wot he had heard. There'd been something uncomplimentary in there, but equine Marshdweller hadn't really cared enough to listen closer since he was already eavesdropping on a different conversation at the time.

Oh? He'd heard about the owner leaving then? Apparently the news was more far spread than Theofilus anticipated. Perhaps that's why the boss sent him? "It's doing fantastic, but the owner is getting married and won't have time to run the business. I'm actually going to be the new owner."
After doing so much work he was happy to get such a title. He had put just about the same amount as work as the owner did--probably more. It was, perhaps, because the owner had the organization skills of a blind man and Theofilus had to sort it all out. Hard work was thankfully repaid. In the future he hoped for nothing more than success.
"I'm surprised you heard the new though. He was trying to keep it under wraps because of some of the clients," The sparrow knew full well that many people wouldn't approve of someone "lesser" taking over the business. Oh well.

"Word gets out sometimes," the equine waved off the sparrow's concerns. "But if you want it kept under the carpet, so to speak, then neither of us will share a word." And he could make that vow easily; Elias might gripe and complain about it, but the canine would succumb to the stallion's desires.
"Congratulations to him, by the way," the equine Marshdweller continued easily. "I've heard that's quite a difficult step to commit to sometimes." He sent an amused glance over his shoulder, grey-green eyes shifting slightly to check on his partner before he swung his head back forward again, hooves confidently stepping silently along the trail. "Are you married, Theofilus?"
They were getting nearer and nearer to town; despite an almost perverse desire to loop around again and force further interaction with the sparrow, they had too much to do for even such a light-hearted prank.

"Thank you, but I imagine it's already too late. Things tend to fly around the Lakes quickly. I imagine half the regions know by now and I was once again left out," Theofilus shrugged as best he could. Arms would be nice, honestly.
"Married? Oh no, not yet anyway. I have someone very dear to me." Theofilus smiled. He did love Calia, but he would never have the strength to propose. He was bad at that. Even though they had children together. The sparrow sighed. Sometimes he wished he was braver when it came to relationships. That would need a lot of mending in the future.
"I'm surprised that my boss is actually going through with it. I thought he would be terrified of getting married. Would you believe that it's someone from Yarrow Gardens that he's marrying?" Theofilus wasn't shocked one bit after meeting the woman. He was actually amazed that the woman didn't bag his boss sooner.

"If she's so special, why not marry her then?" El asked, more to antagonize than out of real concern or curiosity.
"I don't envy your partner. I get all the nagging I need from Whip there."
He continued moving back and forth while Rai and Theo exchanged conversation. El wasn't much use for that, he noticed, people ended up getting offended more often than not when El was allowed to have his say. Go figure. So, when it was important for Rai to shmooze clients or their tour groups, El would disappear, sometimes fighting off some critters to make the path safer, but usually just confirming that their route was still safe. Good common sense it was, to scout trails. Maybe it would teach these city slickers something as well, and let them survive if they ever found themselves stranded in the wilderness. Morons.
Before too terribly long, the group found itself approaching their destination. It was modest as villages went, with enough to get by and doing enough trade to allow the inhabitants to make a living. El nodded to those he knew as they walked in, noticing some of the strange looks they were getting. Well, they knew better to stare at him if they didn't want to hear him cuss them out for half a day. They left each other alone for the most part, and El liked the arrangement.
"I'll be at the pub when you're done here," El told Rai. And he moved off slowly to have a pint.
